November CSR Discussion Day: Hustle by Talo Segura

    By Cia

Wow, November already. With the year almost over, I wanted to keep featuring things that kept readers guessing and challenge the idea of the traditional reading genres and stories. What did you think of Hustle? Share your thoughts below, but first, the interview!! Chocolate or Vanilla? I have to cheat... both! What's your favorite room in your home? Do you plot or write there? I don't have a favourite room and I write where ever I find myself alone and not being disturbed, of

LGBT themed movie review "Velvet Goldmine"

Hmmm...for once the synopsis does not show the movies complete plot Velvet Goldmine was a critical flop in 1998, when it first came out, but I never heard of it until now. I now understand why reviewers were so harsh on this movie, but I am going to look at it from modern viewpoint and an eye as a film critic.   I use LGBT in this description, because it is not just about two gay guys, a lesbian couple, or something that is sexually monotoned. It has a lot of meaning for the entire sexual sp

An Unfortunate Update

Dear friends,   I'm sad to report that, with a mere 3 weeks of training remaining, I was dropped from the Marine Corps Officer Candidates School. While, at the end, I was training at a level even with, or above, most other candidates, my performances in the beginning suffered greatly from an overall lack of military knowledge and familiarity, and my overall progress, therefore, was unsatisfactory. While this occurrence has been incredibly disappointing, I thank those special few for their unwa

Reviewing World War I

My next movie will be "Velvet Goldmine" after I finish this experimental review of something bigger than any movie.   With so much hype over World War I's anniversary (1914-1918), I thought, why not review World War? It's not a gay film, nor is it practical to talk about entire conflicts with many plots and diverse characters unless you are an academic or are trying to say something big. However, as a war that reshaped Europe, changed the course of history through its subsequent and concurring

Gay Themed Movie review "Maurice"

Ah Fuck!   I forgot how I felt about this kind of movie; Victorian and Edwardian era movies are my most detested historical and geographical framework. Some people like the idea of servants and masters (No not BDSM kind alas ), a rigid class based society (Movies like this make me want to drink to my grandfather and his strident Marxist-Socialist ideology), and a society so effete that it ignores its own hypocrisy (This is the British stereotype that has existed for nearly a century).   I l

The Unsolvable Riddle

The Unsolvable Riddle   Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, a reporter and lawyer, began writing a series of tracts which when finished in 1879 was called “The Riddle of Man-Manly Love.” In these booklets, he discusses the nature of sexuality including the innate quality of some men to love other men exclusively. As with Karl Kertbeny, Ulrichs wasn’t happy with the common references to gay men such as pederast or sodomite. He created some Greek referenced terms for sexual identity, Dioning for straight men

Three WW1 Poems, a tribute

Poem 1: Hyacinths on the Somme   The beat in the air is like a drum Where every drop of rain falls cold And snares the mud where blood was sold To march the men to kingdom come.   Too late we there upon the field Were to find the reason to live Was our life to each other give And soothe the wound that never healed.   So flowers in the mud are we Boldly blooming within our hearts By His command and lusty darts Before our time to die could be.

Gay themed movie review, "Beautiful Thing"

I'll move across the pond for the next two reviews, since I got a request to review Maurice (haven't seen that movies in years, so I will need to go search for it) and Zombie, who rarely ever agrees with my actions , are both products of Great Britain. I will start this off with a familiar movie to almost every gay guy, "Beautiful thing" (1998). I didn't know about the play until a while later, but I have not seen it on stage sadly.   This is the grandfather movie of the gay film cliches; Its

Review of Gay Themed film "Shelter"

Alright this will be my last review, unless people really like reading my critiques.   The last movie I am reviewing is usually found in the top 10 lists of gay films that both heterosexual and gay audiences seem to enjoy. The American indie Film "Shelter" was made in 2007, but it holds an interesting quality about it; something nostalgic, but not dated. The best way to describe it is classy, which ironically is one of the themes of this movie that I have rarely ever scene touched upon in gay

Vacation and then my return to work

I finally took a vacation (if you call visiting family that). First real time off since moving here... yeah so 8 months in the making.   My flight left early due to incoming severe storms and all 15 of us were there early. We loaded quickly and were in the air before the storm moved in. I guess its good that the Des Moines airport is so small and my flight to DC was really empty.   I got to see old co-workers and friends. Hanging out was nice but they were an hour away and I have been used t

Gay Themed Movie Review "From Beginning to End"

There's something so wrong about this movie...............And So wonderfully enchantingly RIGHT!   The 2009 Brazillian film "From Beginning to End" or (Do Começo ao Fim) is an interesting movie with great societal lessons and character study, but I have to say that last third nearly killed the film for me. Although, genuinely a good film, it had groundbreaking greatness in it, if only they would break from conventional film making.   So let's start at the beginning, two half-brothers grow up

Review of Gay Themed Movie "Judas Kiss"

Alright, I will make this a brief review, because going into this movie, I thought I would be in love with it. It has all the elements of a movie that I should love: cute boys, steamy love triangles, science fiction plot devices (basically Back to the Future meets DK's "Do Over" without the interesting plot points), and an ex porn star.   I am not saying this was a bad film, it is an enjoyable romp about a guy meeting his past self and trying to make changes to his life for the better. However

European Odyssey 2014

Phew. I'm exhausted. Right now, I am typing from our bed at Paya's mother's house, recovering from 4 hours of travel up through slovakia and into the Czech Republic, but this is but the latest in a long line of journeys over the last week or so.   We arrived just less than a fortnight ago from London having decided that the best use of our financial resources was to visit for two weeks instead of the usual one. The journey started our badly. Our plane was full of chattering girls from what app

Review of Gay Themed Movie "Were the World Mine"

If I keep watching more gay movies, I might just end up making my own blog for reviewing these, but as for now, I will just write a review whenever I feel like it:   "Were the World Mine" was a movie made in 2008, so it is quite recent, but I did not hear about it until I began looking into a list of recommended gay themed movies.   First off let me get this off my chest, I hate Shakespeare adaptations in modern times, especially after watching the wreck that is "Private Romeo" (a gay themed

My Problem with Writing Right Now

When you've been depressed for a while, and you've found writing really hard, getting back into it can be a bit of a challenge. I'm feeling a lot better now. Going to school to study sound engineering this autumn, and it feels like my life is back on some kind of track. But the writing is still difficult.   The problem is that I have lots of ideas, and I want to get back to writing properly, I really do. But I'm mostly motivated to work on my new ideas. So I sit down thinking, 'I'm gon

My Supervisor Had One Crazy Paranormal Experience As A Teenager

I've been working as an intern in a museum with my supervisor, Katie, for the past couple of weeks. Today, we had a discussion that turned into the paranormal, and she told me about something that happened when she was a teenager. She tries to debunk crazy things that have happened, but this is one she hasn't been able to do. It was the summer after she graduated from high school, sometime in the second half of the 1990's. She was 18 at the time. Her friend Billy was a few years older, but stil

Terry's Ballade

Ballade:   Shadows creep up my wall to say The time is ticking fast on me And though I wait, it's long in the day To have so many doubts about me – To weigh me down, and not be free. Questions crawl up my heart inside Where no one sees, not even me The shadow's pace that I long to hide.   Then sometimes it seems I should pray Humbly upon a bended knee To hurry up the long Judgment Day That from my mind will clear the debris – That will rend my heart most holy. So until that t

Adulthood

It's been a few weeks since I've turned eighteen. Metamorphosing from teen to adulthood was kind of scary when I thought about it. But I'm more scared of being an adult.   Under my sugarcoated happiness and weirdness, I have fears of things that it's sometimes stupid and childish at most but also maybe it's because I'm having an early mid-life crisis.   Under my armor, I'm scared of what will become of the future. The unforeseen sights and events that could occur in my life. I wonder what is

The Sensualist Burger

The Sensualist Burger     Not much has been said about the typewriter's powerful limitations on an artist's imagination. Typing a thing makes it look so permanent, and shatters the pretty illusion that a pen-stroke offers of an easy redo. To that end, there came a generation of writers tied to the terrible indelibility of a typewritten word, sentence and paragraph. And, I have read that Earnest Hemingway would sit in agonized concentration for an hour or more before he dared to strike the k

Officially as of 1:47 PM today, I am a homeowner

My blogs are pictures of my life at a certain point in time, so on my birthday on all the possible days for this to happen, I close on my house.   I can bore you with the process that had occurred through the last 2 months, but I won't. Suffice to say, I believe the Municipal government of Boston is incredibly corrupt and is getting kickbacks from contractors in order to enforce ordinances that seem on paper to be easy to follow, but in practice, require an accuracy that can only be done by m

eBook Review: Let it Ride by L.C. Chase

Let it Ride by L.C. Chase My rating: 4 of 5 stars   I read Let it Ride... and then let it ride. It's hard to write this review without spoiling the story. My first impressions of Bridge were of a big, affable cowboy whose everyone's friend on the surface. Under that, he has a great big heart that's set on Eric. Eric is cautious, and with his past, slow to trust.   Watching their dance play out as they go from the private 'I want him, does he want me?' moments to the end was great. At no tim

Interesting Conversation with my boss

So today I had a meeting with my boss to do my monthly performance review. Usually it is done face to face but this time it was via telephone.   We talked about my numbers for the quarter and what I have been doing and trouble I am stirring up in a good way.   So the good news: I work the next 3 days but have been told not to do anything relating to our team email box. Not because I am going on vacation but because I have done triple the amount they want us to complete. Some people are strug

I need to vent!

For the past few months, I've had the misfortune of having to work three jobs to keep my head above water financially. This is getting increasingly harder to do now that one job is done for the summer season and the remaining two are constantly cutting back on hours. I've worked almost 50 hours a week sometimes working two jobs a day for three months. But now I find myself barely working twenty hours combined for the last two weeks. How am I supposed to pay bills and rent when my jobs are taking

Transition

By no means do I have a particularly complex job... but it turns out I do have a broad base of responsibilities. Until you start writing your "transition" documents, you don't realise just how "big" your job is.   I am writing four separate transition briefings. The first two are client specific, for my two major clients and are currently running at around 10,000 for client (1) and 8,000 for client (2). I have a "process and products" briefing to write detailing the processes I manage, the
