alaspuryorick
Hello fellow fans, I'm kind of a posting newbie, although I've read everything Dom has written. I just finished rereading The Ordinary Us, which is my favorite story, and I have to say once again just how engaging it is ! I'm going to start by confessing obnoxiously that I'm a literature graduate student and I'm not supposed to enjoy this sort of fiction... so, I initially classified it as a guilty pleasure in my mind (of course you're allowed to despise me for being a snob). However, I've been reading other gay fiction online and I have not come across another story which is written as well as Dom's, so I'm more tempted to classify it as a pleasure now, period. I love the way the characters come to life and how the sex is never gratuitous, but plot-driven. The language is nuanced and never crass (is anybody else put off by opening paragraphs where the main character decides to describe himself and announces his length and girth to the world?). I love the humor and great supporting characters in Dom's stories. There is little repetition (I've read stories that seem to have to tell the reader everything , instead of allowing him/her to infer) and the writing is overall pretty mature; even the adult characters seem believable to me and don't often fall into sounding like supportive/homophobic stereotypes. I loved it when Dom started to explore the third person narrator for a change, which allowed more flexibility to his narrative technique, in stories that were incidentally gay-related like TOSOM. Why Dom has not thought of publishing his writing is beyond me. Has he addressed this issue at all? I was happy to see that someone is trying to make a screenplay out of the Ordinary Us, and I do hope that they are able to contact Dom. It would be a great movie! I am as disappointed as everyone on this board that Dom has disappeared from our radars... I hope he does come back from his writer's block! In the meantime, I was wondering if anybody could point out to me any specific stories that could match Dom's quality of writing? I asked this a year ago and some people sent me names from the GA site. I read quite a few stories, but have as yet to come across anything as brilliant as TOU or TLW. I think I've been spoiled. Maybe you could suggest gay literature that I could buy? I've mostly read nineteenth century and early twentieth century stuff (Oscar Wilde, E.M Forster and such) which is why I ask. I've read depressing contemporary gay literature, but I was wondering if anybody knows of uplifting stories (I think this is as much of a guilty pleasure for a lit student as any--we're supposed to enjoy only tragedies and I do love my Shakespeare, but sometimes I need romantic comedies for a change) Thanks in advance for your answers! 1 Link to comment

I read quite a few stories, but have as yet to come across anything as brilliant as TOU or TLW. I think I've been spoiled. I think the Best Of Nifty website from Awesomedude covers the best. And if you haven't read either of these... for me, one story that is at the same level as Dom's writing is Human Condition by Jayne Finn at Archerland. You might also enjoy Laika by EleCivil on Awesomedude. Maybe you could suggest gay literature that I could buy? In this extended Domluka drought, I broke down and ordered 4 gay fiction books from Amazon. I thought to myself 'well, if they're published, they must be good or better than Dom's writing'. Boy was I wrong . I bought Best Gay Erotica 2008, Best Gay Romance 2008 and found a few good stories, but nothing awesome (at least in my mind). So that was a $41.00 lesson learned. Take Care, P.S. - I also ordered two other books, but wasn't really expect quality fiction with the titles Dorm Porn: Steamy Tales of Boys on Campus & Every Frat Boy Wants It ) Link to comment
alaspuryorick
Hey, Thanks for the suggestions. I've read nifty stories before, but have not found an author that made me overly enthusiastic. I'll check best of nifty, since sticking to unpublished material in this genre seems to be the best policy for the time being... However, these titles P.S. - I also ordered two other books, but wasn't really expect quality fiction with the titles Dorm Porn: Steamy Tales of Boys on Campus & Every Frat Boy Wants It ) do sound interesting Link to comment
GaryK
It's not exactly a comedy, but for romantic action/adventure novellas you can hardly go wrong with anything from C James. He's a Hosted Author here. I highly recommend, For the Love, which is completed. Let the Music Play is even better and if you start it now it might be completed by the time you get towards the end. CJ's stories are worthy of publication. Moving On by Jack Frost is still incomplete, but it's romantic and is generally upbeat and even funny in some parts. You can find him in the eFiction section. In fact any of the authors in my signature are worth reading. If it's books you want then look into the Killian Kendall mystery series by Josh Aterovis. Happy reading! Site Administrator Graeme Posted May 22, 2008 Site Administrator Share Posted May 22, 2008 I can strongly recommend From The Heart, by Codey Brody Comes Home, by Tim Mead is also recommended, with a number of follow-up novels. Link to comment
sat8997
I'll add Duncan Ryder's Everybody's Wounded which is here at GA. And Vic...I'm shocked, I tell you, just shocked at your choice of reading material. Link to comment
NaperVic
And Vic...I'm shocked, I tell you, just shocked at your choice of reading material. Smut aside, I was surprised that the quality of the writing was average at best. You'd think with titles like 'Every Frat boy wants it' & 'Dorm Porn: Steamy Tales of Boys on Campus' and the fact that they were published that they'd be better than average. Link to comment
AFriendlyFace
We also mustn't forget about our very own Graeme! He's got quite a few greats! My favourite is New Brother. Link to comment
old bob
Just my own opinion : one of the best GA authors, when not the best in science fiction is dkstories (DKstories). If I had to keep just a story from all GA stories, I would take the "Do Over" serie, principally the fist stories (Do over, Do over redux, Doing it right and Lets do it). GA is like an oyster's bed. Some have pearls in it, some not, but are nice to eat, and some (only a few ones) have to be let on your beds Have a nice day, Old Bob, who also appreciate oysters (most French ones "les fines de claires") on his table . Demetz
*Pokes Vic* Check out Nathan and David for some better than average "smut" .... I only have 2 of 3 parts posted so far but I've received some excellent comments on it so far. Other stories I reccomend would be dkstories's "Do Over" and its first sequel "Do Over: Redux" - Those two in particular are incredibly well written. Link to comment
jdmotion
Dom's stories are great! I've read two really good books that should be on everyones shelf. The first is "Boy Meets Boy" by David Levithan that is an amazing book with a great story. The other is "Hero"by Perry Moore which caters to the super hero fan in all of us. Both of these books were impulse buys. Edited May 26, 2008 by Jonathan Diaz Link to comment
Tiger
Well, I love Dom's stories. However, I have found that C James, dkstories, and Shadowgod have some good stories too. In fact, it will be hard to keep up when Dom finally returns. Link to comment
MikeL
I recommend Stefan Schmidt's stories. The are longer than most other authors' at GA, but are well worth your time. Link to comment

The Killian Kendall Series is great. I wish Josh Atevoris would write more it has been a while since he's written anything. The spin offs were also good. Does anyone have any other good books to share? I've read plenty but its hard to find anything good on amazon or B&N. I like books better because I am always on the move. The spin offs were also good. He's written quite a bit. More books will be coming out fairly soon. "All Lost Things" (ALT) is next, sometime later this year. It's been almost completely rewritten. ALT should have come out after Bleeding Hearts, but this is how his publisher wanted it to be. Go figure. There will be a few more surprises after that if sales go well. We won't know how well the current books are selling until Josh gets his first royalty check. I'm glad you've enjoyed the series so far. Link to comment
Daisy
hia, One of my favourite writers after Dom is a guy called Ronyx. This is his website: www.themustardjar.com He writes a mixture of stories, but his lastest has been my favourite. It starts of a little depressing, but soon becomes a rom, give it a try, its amazing to me. He's just started the sequel as well so plenty of reading. Celia Link to comment

You could try Petron's Satyricon. One of my teacher once gave it to me as a reward for some achievement. Having read the first few pages I was quite flabbergasted. Link to comment
hh5
What is tone usually set in modern day literature? I must bet it be a more involve piece of reading. Link to comment
alaspuryorick
Thank you so much for your suggestions! I've been away from the forums for a while, since I had kind of given up on Dom showing up again, and had a lot of work to do... Just so happy that Dom is back!! Link to comment
