    Talk Talk

Conversations. Sometimes it’s too much, sometimes too little, formal, informal, clumsy, artificial, with another word: difficult. Let’s practice, Shall we? #253 Someone is on the bus. The guy beside them fidgets the whole time with an irritating tinkling bangle while telling them, it seems, their entire life story, including very personal things. It’s time to pop in the earbuds. When it’s time to get off the bus, the talker has disappeared and the strange bangle is now on th

Not Resolutions, But Recommitment

2019, was really not a good year. There was a lot of pain, some backsliding. i’m not sure that the joys balanced it out. Will going over what happened help it make sense? Probably not. So instead of looking back, i thought i’d look forward. 2020, a new decade.  Well, unless you’re my co-worker who insists that the new decade won’t start until Jan 2021, but i digress. While i’m not one to make “New Year’s Resolutions,” i’ve gotten a head start at a better year. Phil and i are making mor

Happy New Year 2020

Happy New Year  Make New Year's goals. Dig within, and discover what you would like to have happen in your life this year. This helps you do your part. It is an affirmation that you're interested in fully living life in the year to come.  Goals give us direction. They put a powerful force into play on a universal, conscious, and subconscious level. Goals give our life direction. What would you like to have happen in your life this year? What would you like to do, to accomplish? Wh

2019 Year in Review

Overall, I’d have to say 2019 was a pretty good year. Looking back, I’m amazed at everything I accomplished this year.  I did a lot of work in my house, clearing out a lot of junk, organizing, and having some renovations take place.  I got new windows, a new couch, had my bathroom gutted and completely remodeled (something that needed to be done for 10 years), and finished assembling 14 shelves for my model horse room, then unpacked my collection and finally have it displayed.  All of this was d

CT scan was mostly normal. The tumor marker that had been climbing dropped 10 points. The only thing that doesn’t look good is a small growth in a thyroid nodule. Another medical test. This one doesn’t require fasting or contrast.

SP and I have had several conversations:  about our pasts, our fears, our insecurities, our hopes for what this could be. Had a few small dates so far, and planning on something larger for New Years.  I'm cautiously optimistic and I think he is too. We seem to be on the same page with things - where we are now, what we want going forward. To possibilities, hope, and the future.  🍾

Holidays

Cake was a hit, but.... Morning before I left my brother called to say dad had fallen (again) and this time shattered his leg just below the hip.  They did a partial hip replacement yesterday morning, using a spinal block instead of putting him out completely.  Doc said his leg / hip bones looked like someone who was 48, not 98 so that was good. He was doing ok this morning. Came back home to find a car from the AirBnB across the street parked in my driveway.  They moved it pretty quic

Music - Christmas

In dulci jubilo (“In sweet rejoicing") Over 600 years ago, one of the most famous carols was composed (the composer is unknown) The earliest known manuscript, Codex 1305, dates the music from c 1400 and is held in Leipzig University Library. Various arrangements have been made over the centuries and this especially beautiful version is by Bach.     This is a recording by the exceptional English organist, Peter Hurford (who died this year), as part of Decca

I Know What Love Is

I thought I knew what love is.  I thought I knew when I met tim.  I thought I knew when he agreed to marry me.  But walking behind him down the street, watching his such-long legs supporting his perfect ass and his black leather jacket sitting just at his sweetly slim hips, made me feel it deeply. This brilliant, sexy, funny, and deeply compassionate man was mine. Then he turned and he smiled at me. It was such a smile, it lit my soul with the brilliance of a thousand suns. I wondered

Penance

I hate watching people tear down others for simply living their lives. You'd think that within the LGBTQ community we'd have figured out how hurtful and damaging it is to do this to one another, but we've still such a long way to go. Some of it is so very subtle. People who are pushed to the fringes of an already marginalized community have it the worst. They get used to little jabs, "good-natured" fun at their expense. Usually these come from the people who they depend on to understand the

Ninety Days

I recently went to the doctor. Had some routine blood tests done that I've not had in a long time. My vitamin D levels were low, while cholesterol and a test called CRP (c-reactive protein, a test that shows inflammation) were very high. Even though I work out hard, I'm predisposed to high cholesterol and heart disease. I have three months to knock my numbers down. If I can't do it on my own, then I go on meds for the rest of my life. I've always said that I won't do medication when ha

Random thoughts

Attended the memorial for the wife of a faculty member today.  They had planned on retiring this year (for the second time), take a position back with his Alma Mater that involved less work (his idea of retirement), and enjoying their time together.  She was a sweet, kind, lovely woman -- but don't mistake that for weak. Not sure exactly how long they've been married, but longer than I've been alive. Between that and the weather changes making me ache, I've been mostly awake since 3am.

Sexual and Gender Identities: A glossary

Our community is so much bigger and more diverse than many of us believe. With a lot of new-ish terms and labels out there detailing identities some may not be aware of, I figured a brief list of definitions might be helpful for someone somewhere. I shall begin with the four letters everyone knows. If you're here, you already know what these mean, but I'm including them anyway.   L: lesbian - a woman who is exclusively attracted to other women G: gay - a person who is exclusi

Project News: Lucid Love

Lucid Love is my new story that I'm working on and right now I'm two chapters in and I can't wait to go on with chapter three.  I guess it's because I am a writer that I keep working on it - I can't just sit here and do nothing because I don't write that great.  Lol.  Even though I may not be a good writer, or good enough to entertain people then I'm still going to work on this project.  Why?  Because it's a story that I really want to write.  This story involves the emotional connection that I

This is a article first posted on my external blog, A Pencil Is Best. In the writing universe, November is NaNoWriMo - it's a chance for writers to concentrate on their work in progress. Here, I look at an alternative of doing different writing-related activities, and reflect on their meaning.   When I persuaded my friend and editor to take part in one of YeahWrite's fiction/poetry grids, I was pleased for a number of reasons. His Views From Home were a masterclass in writing a kimo, i

What Happened During November?

*sips tea for throat* What happened during November? Well. I wrote a lot.  Okay so let's break it down. I was keeping pretty good on keeping on track with the base amount of words. I did a lot of small things to get started and I continued a few older things that I've been wanting to play with.  A list: A Santa Needs a Mate story - 31 chapters in length. I'll post it when I'm done with it.  Obscurity: A Morally Grey Harry Potter story. I need to reread the first 20 chapters t

Unsolicited Grammar Lesson of the Day: lie vs. lay - transitive and intransitive verbs

The confusion when it comes to these two words is understandable. A lot of people write 'lay' when they should write 'lie' (as in lying down) and, however more rarely, vice versa. So here's a quick guide to how they are different and how they work. 'To lie' is an intransitive verb. That means that it's something you do, but not to something; it's an action without a direct object. You lie down. 'To lie' is conjugated: lie, lies, lying, lay, has/have lain. As you see, the past tense of 'l
