Andy78 Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 I know where the prison it refers to is, and thought it was Twain (or similar) at first, but I don't think they were really concerned about the possession and supply of drugs in those days. So I'm assuming it's someone more modern. Goes away to think about it.
Slytherin Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 (edited) The walking dead !! Is it ? Is It ? Is it ? Must be a book called the walking dead **jumps up and down with excitement** Just kidding I do know who the author is, unsure what book it is.. **walks to bookshelf** Edited February 13, 2013 by slytherin
podga Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Ummm, John Grisham's "A Time to Kill". Now that Joann mentions it, I do believe she is right. OK, I'm not so good at recognizing the living authors, either.
joann414 Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Here you go, and the author is dead Podga "It was easer to live under a regime than fight it."
comicfan Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I was just talking about this book. Do not ask for "Whom the Bell Tolls" it tolls for thee. - Ernest Hemingway. And if it isn't boy am going to have egg on my face.
Red_A Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 Great uncle Mog met Ernest Hemingway on two separate periods in 1918 and late thirties, and always claimed that he was the source of this Quote (mmmm!???). It is indeed For Whom the Bell Tolls. I believe the title did not have the" it tolls for thee," as this was automatically assumed as most people would have know the original quote by John Donne(Dunn) I admit I have never read any of his books, but had the quote engraved in my mind in 1961/2
comicfan Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 A platoon of Wargals was drilling in the castle yard below him. Morgarath watched them for a few seconds, listening to the guttural, rhythmic chant that accompanied all their movements. They were stocky, misshapen beings, with a long, brutish muzzle and fangs like a bear or a large dog. Good luck.
Andy78 Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Wargals? Morgarath? Very memorable names which mean nothing to me. Doesn't seem like I'm going to get this one.
podga Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 As usual, I'm not only , I'm completely clueless.
Palantir Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Yay! Finally I'm close to an answer. It's a Ranger's Apprentice book - something about a Sorcerer or Enchanter in the title I think. The whole series is a delightful, easy read from an (Aussie) author who is still alive and still writing

Palantir Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Well, I had to look up the exact title - The Sorcerer In The North. Okies, here goes. Malta, August 1983 "By the time Eddie 'the Squeeze' Pinelli was five hours dead,Valenti was on a Boeing 747 halfway across the Atlantic."
Palantir Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 First clue. This story was inspired by a piece of 'mystery' in 'The Wind In The Willows' by Kenneth Graeme.
Zombie Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 So this is a satirical "take" on the Philip Marlowe / detective genre?
joann414 Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 Dang, I think the author is de Lint, but can't remember the title.
Palantir Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Well done Joann414. You've got the author. He's a master at introducing magic and mystery into 'real' world situations. This is one of his earlier works (I'm fairly certain) I wouldn't call it satirical Zombie - but there are definitely tough guys and classic baddies in the story.
joann414 Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 I am going to say "The Green Mantle". I may be wrong. if so , give me another hint:P
Palantir Posted February 19, 2013 Posted February 19, 2013 Yeppers! No hints needed. 'Greenmantle' along with 'Moonheart' are my two favorite De Lint novels. You have the floor.
Yettie One Posted February 20, 2013 Posted February 20, 2013 Jeeesh and that sounded like the opening line of a maffia hit story!
Zombie Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 While we wait for Joann to come up with something evil ... "I made my way into the living room, picked up an old diary that Lydia had been doodling on and one of her felt-tip pens and made my way to the loft. After sweeping a pile of discarded newspapers and sweet wrappers onto the floor, I settled myself at my desk and in large capital letters wrote the words that would change my life: ...."
Zombie Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 You want a clue? Or are you too busy doing more important stuff, like indexing those old newspapers you've been piling up since you last moved house, or retrieving that mouldy bit of toast that dropped behind the counter last Easter ... oh wait, that's the clue *heheh*
Palantir Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 You want a clue? Or are you too busy doing more important stuff, like indexing those old newspapers you've been piling up since you last moved house, or retrieving that mouldy bit of toast that dropped behind the counter last Easter ... oh wait, that's the clue *heheh* That's a clue??? That laugh of yours came across with a slightly evil undertone - lol. The first thing I thought of was a movie where an author enacted a murder in real life exactly matching the plot of his novel. That's not it though.
Zombie Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Heheh *laughs evilly * - okay, here's another clue. It's about a procrastinator
