Poetry posted in this category are works of fiction. Names, places, characters, events, and incidents are created by the authors' imaginations or are used fictitiously. Any resemblances to actual persons (living or dead), organizations, companies, events, or locales are entirely coincidental.

Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 70. Descent and Ascent

I have been experimenting with varied metric patterns. I found poems formed this way in the works of George Herbert, and decided to try some on my own. Perhaps you can determine the patterns - and whether these modern examples work at all.

Desire conceived in snapshot haste

entangles swift

those pliant minds with thoughts unchaste

which veer and drift

upon sharp shoals of wreck and waste.

Seduced by fantasies untold

soon one is bound

by sirens’ songs surpassing cold,

no pity found,

or captives who were e’er paroled.

Once caught within this mental trap,

How to escape?

For there’s no well-marked folding map,

or hole agape

in fences which around us wrap.

Yet hope within the heart survives,

for friends still smile,

time taken from their busy lives

to spend a while

and help him o’er the wall who strives.

If you feel inclined to leave a thought or reflection here, I'd be grateful. Thank you for reading.

A double rhyming scheme which changes half way through each stanza? Show off.   You have achieved an intriguing, fascinating mix of the Jacobean and today. Bravo.

Blame whoever taught George Herbert for the complex rhyme and meter scheme. I found it fascinating, almost conversational, and an irresistible challenge. Thanks very much for having a good look at these neo-Jacobean lines.
