Falls Creek Lessons - Links - 20. Chapter 20
[Rob Skitter]
Diane won’t tell me what happened between her and Greg in Euroa. She just says it’s not his fault and she’ll tell me later. Whatever it was, it must have been pretty stormy. Greg’s face was the coldest I’d ever seen, and Diane was close to tears. After I let Greg into the car, she just clung to me and shook with emotion. All she would say is to tell me to not blame her brother.
It was probably best that Greg fell asleep soon after. It was a bit of a surprise, as it wasn’t late, but I suppose he was just worn out. It certainly gave everyone some breathing space. Without his involvement, we settled into a quiet and pleasant drive. Chris took over the driving at Glenrowan and I took over for the last section from Myrtleford to Mt. Beauty. There wasn’t a lot of conversation, but what was there was light-hearted.
When I got into the drivers seat at Myrtleford, I couldn’t help but notice how young and innocent Greg looked while he was asleep. It’s almost like when he’s awake he puts a mask on – making him appear more reserved to the outside world. It reminded me that he’s only eighteen. Yes, that makes him an adult, but he’s still a teenager. Feeling a little guilty about what I put him through with Chris and Paul, I resolved to try to be nicer to him for the rest of the weekend. If I make an effort, maybe I’ll get rewarded with a chance to go skiing with just Diane.
I still wish he wasn’t here, but if I was honest, I should be blaming his sister, not him, and that’s something I just can’t do.
