Falls Creek Lessons - Links - 57. Chapter 57
[Dan Cronin]
I don’t believe that the tiki has any magical powers, but if Greg is even the slightest bit superstitious, it may give him some confidence.
Strangely, I’m going to miss it when it’s time to hand it over to my cousin Jake. I know I’m never going to have a son to pass it on to, and Maori tradition says it belongs to the tribe, not the current holder. Once Jake’s son reaches the age of twelve, I’m going to fly back to New Zealand and present it to Jake, so he can pass it on to his son. I still have fond memories of when my Dad formally put it around my neck as the new custodian. Indeed, it’s one of the last times Dad ever smiled at me, as I came out to him soon afterwards. Jake and his son deserve to have those memories too.
Unless something changes with my father, handing the tiki on is going to also represent the end of our relationship. He won’t understand why I’m handing it on, and it’ll end the last happy memory we share.
