April 22nd - Introduction Line

Sometimes the story is outlined on paper or in our head, but how to begin? The first sentence should engage the reader without revealing too much or boring them to death. This time we’ll do it the other way around. PT #41a Pick an introductory sentence from a favorite book on your shelf at home or a story on GA and use it to start a short story or vignette. And because it’s still April: PT#41b Choose the first line of any poem and continue to write a poem of yo

My Music Collection, Part 2

I've been working on it and have my collection sorted by group and release year (when known). It includes all CDs and vinyl. There is more to add but I'll be parsimonious about adding it as it is stuff I might unload on e-bay. Yes- I do have doubles of various things I might have on the trading block. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3 Doors Down The Bet

Grammar Guide 16 - Complements

Complement - a word, phrase, or clause that is necessary to complete the meaning of a given expression. Complements help add meaning or a story to the subject and verb of a sentence, for example. There are five types of Complements: Direct Object - The direct object receives the action of the verb and is usually a noun or pronoun. Tip: Ask yourself "Who" or "What" to identify the direct object in a sentence. Billy drank lemonade. (Lemonade is the direct object

Book Review: Somewhere This Way

Anthologies can be interesting reads and, in the past, have introduced me to writers I might not have found in other ways. If it’s by one author then it can be an interesting introduction to an author’s work or else it is a way to see how an author handles writing short stories, which are different form from novel writing. If it’s an anthology of different writers then there is a chance to discover new authors. Unfortunately, this anthology did not provide any of this. I found this antholog

April Classic Author Excerpt: Interlude by Luc

Did you catch Monday's blog featuring Interlude by Luc? This is a novella-length story that explores the idea of fate and true love... and who doesn't love love? Or doesn't want to love love. Since our commenter from Monday's blog fell in love with Ch. 6, I thought I'd share a scene from that chapter. Enjoy! Want to read more? Click here

April Classic Author Feature: Interlude by Luc

As we like to do, this week's Classic feature aims at bringing another one of the older stories on GA by a past promoted author to the forefront so newer readers don't miss out on the gems that were enjoyed by others in the past. So... what are your views on long lost loves and fated meetings through time?    Length: 39,350 Description: Sometimes the connection between two souls is so deep that it transcends time and gender. This is a story about two such souls who are joine

Writing Course

Tomorrow I'm off on a week's writing course. I'm really excited about it. There's nothing like immersing yourself in a writing environment and talking with other people who are on the same wavelength. Getting out of the usual routine is also inspiring and visiting a new place always gives me lots of ideas. For anyone who is following my stories 'To the Weyr' and 'Hidden Secrets' don't worry - they will be updated on Monday and Thursday as usual, although I may be slower replying to comments

Plotting

Now, I know that there are people out there who hear me talking about planning and plotting out a story, and they might gloss over it and think that this is a simple part of the process. But it isn't. In fact, it's one of the most important parts of the writing process that there is, and it's something that we all need to really concentrate and focus on before we even begin writing all of the other elements of our story. It will tell you what you're most excited about writing, how to connect one

Shakespeare's Revenge, or How I Lost My Fear of Poetry or Lost My Head

Prompt 39 April 23rd is Shakespeare's birthday.  Since April is Poetry Month and I'm absolutely horrible at writing poetry, I'm at a disadvantage, to say the least.  However, I'm always game to try something new, so I challenge our faithful readers and writers to a duel, you know, Tudor style. In honor of the Bard of Avon's birthday, let's do sonnets.  I found an explanation, which I still don't really understand, but I think I get the gist of it.   A sonnet is a 14 line poem.  It

Grammar Guide 15 - Compound Subjects

This week we discuss the rules of thumb for dealing with Compound Subjects, especially in how they relate to last week's topic on Subject-Verb Agreement. Compound Subjects - Two or more individual nouns or noun phrases connected by "and" , "or", or "nor" to form a single, longer noun phrase.  They can cause confusion with the subject-verb agreement.  Example:  spaghetti and meatballs is a compound subject, but it is also considered a singular unit, and thus gets a singular verb.

Featured Story: Moving On by Rob Colton

A big thank you to @Timothy M. for sharing this great review of one our (plus one of my favorite) GA authors, and sorry to readers for the late post!    Moving On by Rob Colton Reviewer: Timothy M. Status: Complete Word Count: 21,912 Sometimes it’s great to return to old favorites and read them again. Moving On by Rob Colton falls in this category for me. The story has some signature Rob features, including a ‘bear’ fetish and plenty of steamy sex, but this is not the onl
