It Was Almost Bye Bye Birdie Time

Needless to say, my life is one big fuck up right now. Everything seems to be going to the shits. Well, not everything. Two significant parts of my life remain on track. My reading is prodigious right now. I am actively reading: Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman, Lords and Ladies by Terry Pratchett, The Seventh Cross by Anna Seghers, Hiroshima by John Hersey, Blood’s a Rover by Harlan Ellison, and most of The New Yorker when it comes to the house most weeks. Yeah, you’re asking how do I keep

Tech Tuesday - New Series and Worlds Feature

This week I'd like to talk about two of the new features coming to the site soon.  I've shared this a bit with the authors, but I wanted to share them a little wider.  This is a more focused view for readers. We currently have one way for authors to group their stories: Series links.  They work, but I've wanted them to be more obvious.  So, with the new version, we're giving a bit more depth to our Series. Series now has a description.  We can also add a series banner and special

An Open Letter to Alzheimer's

Dear Alzheimer’s,    You’re just a dirty sneak thief.  You sneak in and steal from people. You don’t even have the courage to announce yourself.  Your nasty cousin, cancer, at least starts with a cough or a pain. But not you, oh no.     You waltzed in, and started taking things. Little things. Things you didn’t think would be noticed; like where the car keys had gone, or the reading glasses. “Everybody remember

Life on The Very Very Small Holding

This morning I woke up, pretended to eat the imaginary ice cream (green flavour!) that Goblinboy pretended to feed me, got up and fetched Baby Wolfeater from his cot, gave them milk, and went back to bed to snuggle my husband. Dashi joined us, because the best place for a lurcher to be is cuddled on our duvet, and after a little while we were invaded by our small and not so small sons. Then I got up.   It's Sunday, so I abandoned my husband with the small boys, and Dashi and I went to

Weekly Wrap Up (Sept 2 - Sept 8)

What to say this week?   Oh, I thought I would like to pass on my sincere thanks and appreciation to our LBO, aka Slytherin, who has some exciting changes coming up in her life and has stepped aside from the Site Moderation Team. Her participation and help with the behind the scenes work on the site has been a great contribution over the years! So, on behalf of the Site Staff and hopefully the membership, thanks LBO.   BTW, LBO stands for Little Blue One, not to be confused with the

College Week 3

Howdy y'all!   Today, I'll be going over my third week at college, so let's begin!   PHYS 2425: This week, my teacher introduced us to forces and Newton's Laws of Motion. I thought I knew them well enough, but boy, I was wrong, really wrong, lol. For our lab, we conducted an experiment to test balancing vectors in two dimensions. Basically, we attached weights to three strings and placed them each on their own pulley that were attached to a force table, then tied the strings

Writing Prompts #698 & #699

Well, I don't want to promise any heat this week (those weirdos in Canada already getting hail and snow, what's up with that?) but maybe down in the southern hemisphere, they're enjoying the weather shift as we begin September. Perfect weather to sit on a bench and ask a ton of questions, like in last week's prompt. Did you try it? Or did your ex crash your big engagement... from beyond the grave? *shivers* That's an October-worthy prompt right there! Make sure you share your prompts below if yo

Baby the Rain Must Fall

I received an interesting comment (not a review, which I would’ve preferred, since it seemed to cover the whole story) on my recently completed five chapter story The Angel of Retribution. Since the comment was not totally flattering, I will refrain from revealing the user name associated with it.   I’ll save you the trouble of having to go look up the comment by quoting it: “Hmm (a half-smiling emoji added here) really bad writing great story though but I don’t really think u (yes, ju

Ask an Author 2.0 #11

My thanks to the two members who sent in multiple questions for a variety of authors following my last appeal. I’ve been pestering the authors since and I’ll be sharing their responses over the next couple of blog entries. This month we have a couple of returning ones and a couple of rookies. In alphabetical order… Gay Author’s Poetry Sensei, @AC Benus, returns with a short question and answer. • You’ve been posting lots of older work which is great.  Will we see something ‘now’ f

When it's not just about you

A few years ago I was fat and out of shape. I got tired of it and decided to do something about it.    Over several years I went to the gym 3 or 4 times a week. I didn't do anybody's insanity workout. I studied and talked to some people and came up with plans that would work for me.    Sometimes I missed. Sometimes things came up and just didn't have time. I was sick on occasion but, more often than not, I went.    I went down from 300 to 240- over time. I haven't l

Tech Tuesday - Premium Subscription System

For those of you that don't know, Gay Authors stays open and improving through the combination of Premium Membership subscribers and advertising.  This pays the bills and allows to maintain and improve the site.  In the last version of the forum software, they introduced a simplified Subscription Management tool.  The most important thing it does is fixes that stupid error "You have already purchased... etc".  The catch, of course, is that any time the software changes like this, there are hiccu

September CSR Feature: Time Will Tell by Remijay

Time Will Tell... will you read this month's CSR story by Remijay? This recently finished story is one that also stood the test of time. It began six years ago with chapter one and just finished in August with chapter fifteen. There's a tale to tell about writing the story just as much as there is in the story itself, I'm sure, and I can't wait to bring more about both to you on the last Monday of the month on the Discussion Day, September 24th.    Time Will Tell by Remijay

College Weeks 1 & 2

Howdy y'all!   Today, I'll be giving y'all a brief summary of my first two weeks at college. But, before we begin, I'll give a quick introduction and explain a few things.   First, the actual titles of my courses are long, so instead, I'll be referring to them by their Subject and Course Number. So, with that in mind: Principles of Physics I is PHYS 2425 Calculus II is MATH 2414 Business and Professional Speaking is SPCH 1321 Introduction to Engin

That's it. August is done. Finito. Wait... the season change doesn't come for 3 more weeks? There's still more warmth or the heat from H-E-double hockey sticks (depending on your locale) or smoke (I'm out west, it's awful!) to go? Well how about we stay indoors and read and write flash fiction? Yes, that's just the ticket!  Don't forget that stories under 1,000 words must be posted as part of a collection.   Prompt 696 – Creative Tag  - The bench A bench appeared in the mid

Thursday 30/8

Dear GA It is late Thursday morning, I have no idea where the past few days have gone. My anxiety levels have been up and down a bit this week, having to deal with government red tape, grrr, they are impossible sometimes. I have just finished another one of my stories, and already had many requests for a book two, I'm not sure if I can or not, I will have to think about it some more. meanwhile, I have gone back to the one unfinished story, and I am hoping to find a suitable conclu

Another Opportunity for Learning: Plotting!

As with a few weeks ago, this Wednesday we're lacking any submissions for the author self-promotions and self-improvement blogs (shown below) so I thought we'd focus on some information and questions shared on GA by members and authors and maybe some other help I could provide when it comes to another vital aspect to writing to build on last week's post. The earlier exploring characterization explored past blogs that had different angles for writing characters as well as two file downloads I've
