    Word Triggers

    By Valkyrie

Certain otherwise-innocuous words can be a trigger for some people.  Maybe it's a negative association with the word - a reminder of past trauma or a social faux pas.  It could be a word that becomes an inside joke - an innocent word given a not-so-innocent meaning.  These words make us cringe and avoid them and not really want to explain our reaction to other people.  For me, a certain spring-blooming flower is a word trigger.  I avoid saying the name of this flower because I have  negative ass

Tech Tuesday - Spoiler Tags

Hello!  Welcome back to Tech Tuesdays!   Starting today, we are planning on bringing this feature back for you every Tuesday.  Most of them will be short but will highlight either existing features or coming features.     Today, we will be going over the use of the spoiler tags.  These are built right into the editor and should be used to hide information that would otherwise spoil someone's enjoyment.  This often applies to the big twists you see in books, movies, tv shows, games, etc

Sailing

I spent a few hours sailing today and it was bloody awesome...       The yacht was a Beneteau 40 foot, and it was great to have the wind in my face as we sailed in the large harbour, with an average of 15 knot apparent winds.   The Shipwreck in the background,  in the first photo is the Cheyes II, one of the last Whaling ships in Australia.

November C S R Discussion Day: Street Life by Graeme

Did you have a chance to read Graeme's short story, Street Life? This was originally posted as part of the 2008 spring anthology, and it's an emotional journey of surprisingly short length but with great impact. Make sure you share your thoughts below, but of course, first we have my interview with Graeme!   What’s the best part of living in Australia? Checks to see if Tourism Australia has sent me a cheque for advertising. Hmm…nothing so far… Definitely the people and cultu

I Will Not Let You

Living with mental illness and depression is difficult. Having a partner who suffers, is also challenging, but I will not let him down.  I am proud of him and he is worth all my love and effort.        I watch the ghosts of your past Swamp and overwhelm you Though I intervene, too often Their pull is greater than my power But always I will be your tether And safety net, I will not let you fall

Status report

Tonight, I started the first chapter of a new story. The working title is “The Black Scandinavian.” The lead character, Troy, comes from the last chapter of “319 Winesap Lane.” Yes, that book is finished, although two chapters remain to be published. (hint, hint, Sharon!) Many of my readers probably will not like the last chapter, but I will not let the cat out of the bag today.   Troy has an identity problem, which is identified in the last chapter of “319.” I won’t reveal it now beca

Common Editing Issues #1

I've received quite a few editing tips from our membership. Today, we're going to look at some provided by JayT. Enjoy!     There are three common editing issues that I come across frequently. They are punctuation (ie. missing commas, misused commas, and dialogue punctuation), misused words (ie nauseous instead of nauseated, then/than misused, they're, their, there misused), and sentences that don't read correctly and interrupt the flow of the story (they can be fragmented s

Published a book in a Kindle Competition. Need Support!

Hello guys...   I finally got the time to post this blog entry as my sister's family went to their house today. I was all crazy this entire week with my nephews being home. And this week has been very tension filled one with, of course because of my nephews are home and, the publishing of my new poetry book for the Kindle competition. Kindle held a competition called 'Pen to Publish 2017' and I have published my new NaPoWriMo Poetry Book for the competition. I am very proud to say, it

Featured Story: Personal Banking

Well, it's the start of a new week, and for today's schedule, we're bringing you Puppilull's review of Personal Banking by Refugium. Featured story days are a great way to highlight one of the many stories that can be found in GA Stories. With so many stories, it's easy for a single story to get lost in the shuffle. If you're reading a story that you would like to do a blog review and bring attention to, PM me (Renee). Now, onto the review. Hopefully you enjoy Puppilull's review enough to go che

Dating Bi-Curious Men “Mess”

Ask yourself this, what does closure mean to you? As we saw before some questions can be left unanswered while some feelings may be left unspoken. When we part ways with another person, no matter the reasoning we will always be stuck in our heads wondering what we did, or how could this have played out differently, right? In most cases the best thing to do is let it go and move on. Only we have feelings, even if you try to hide them, they are still there. There will come a time we can no longer

A Win in the Gym

Lot's of people go to the gym and... fail hard.   It's complicated. There's all sorts of machines, techniques, theories, philosophies, and just plain wrong. Even if you spend the bucks on a personal trainer, does he have the smarts to craft a program that's right for you?   It took me a while to figure out what I wanted to do. At my age, it would be pretty stupid to try to make myself into Conan the Barbarian.        We've all seen this guy at the gym. I w

November's C S R Feature: Street Life by Graeme

November is here, and this month I wanted to feature something different. There are a lot of stories on the site with themes that involve some heavy subjects that can really make you think, but one of the best of those is an older story that many current readers probably haven't found since it was posted for a 2008 anthology themed "Living in the Shadows".   Street Life by Graeme   Length: 16,661   Description: *Reader warning* This story does contain mature th
