Disasters, Delights and Other Detours - 6. Occam's Razor and Doppler Effect

Time for a bit of science. You can all get out your red pens.

Occam's Razor

Will Occam had a razor keen,
the like to which has ne'er been seen,
though Aristotle came quite close,
as logic seemed to him routine.

It's not a razor (I'm jocose),
but Occam's rule for all verbose
explanatory theorems states:
eschew the over-grandiose.

Instead, in rational debates,
if two ideas have equal weights,
the one with least assumptions wins
the day o'er other postulates.

My heart is burst, my head, it spins;
the simplest reason for my grins
is love surprising, unforeseen
yet here our life as one begins.

Doppler Effect

Herr Christian Doppler had a flash
of intuition bold and rash
that waves' inconstancies reflect
an object's movement on the dash.

The famed eponymous effect
of wave compression with respect
to sounding items drawing near
explains the tones our ears detect.

Wave elongation will appear
with parting bodies, to your ear
they sing their songs in lower keys,
like sirens, which we overhear.

My heart proves Doppler by degrees,
it races at your gentle squeeze
but as you leave, its rate will crash,
upholding his hypotheses.

Leave comments or hypotheses, it's fine by me....

I'm lucky; my memories of school are all good but I have always enjoyed learning and even today it was fun looking up Friar William when reading your poem.

It's always fun to find a scientific or mathematical principle that needs a poetic treatment. I believe Aditus put up the challenge of The Universal Gas Constant once....

Superb, Parker... my eyes tend to glaze over at these subjects, but not when you go exploring. I know it will all make sense in the end... once you apply love to the equation :) ... I repeat... superb, you lovable nerd... cheers... Gary.... :D

Love may or may not conquer all, but it certainly helps make some things more palatable. And 'lovable nerd' feels so good, you caused a discernible blush. :) thank you so much for reading these, Gary!

I enjoy your science / maths poems so much, even if the actual substance makes my head spin. One thing that makes the struggle more enjoyable, is how you always bring it back to love. Wonderful, dear friend.

You make me blush, you are that kind. I find myself drawn to the science and math poems, too. It is indeed the fun of getting at the kernel of meaning that makes these worthwhile to write. Thanks for reading these!
