    Word Triggers

    By Valkyrie

Certain otherwise-innocuous words can be a trigger for some people.  Maybe it's a negative association with the word - a reminder of past trauma or a social faux pas.  It could be a word that becomes an inside joke - an innocent word given a not-so-innocent meaning.  These words make us cringe and avoid them and not really want to explain our reaction to other people.  For me, a certain spring-blooming flower is a word trigger.  I avoid saying the name of this flower because I have  negative ass

    By wildone

First thing first, I really need anyone who is thinking to enter our yearly Anthology, please see Val's Thursday blog and if you fingers haven't started typing, get them going! As you read this, I am indisposed. Read into that what you want . But I'm up by a lake in the mountains looking at the colours change for fall.  So next week in the northern hemisphere, we flip into fall, autumn, whatever you like to call it. Down under the equator, they are about to hit spring   What is y

Cooking For One

Sorry Delia Smith, but One is not Fun. Cooking for one is, after lack of sex, company, and bedtime snuggles, the worst thing about Cris being away is cooking for fucking one.   I would rather not eat than cook for one. I would rather, and generally do, sit on the sofa and eat carrot sticks, chips, and dip, rather than cook for one. To be perfectly honest, I would rather starve than cook for one. I swear there is no more depressing task in the universe.   I don't know how you all do it. I ass

Reflecting On The Past

Today would have been Dad's 69th birthday. Today mark's two years since I last talked to him. In a few weeks, it will mark two years since he died. I have been in a contemplative mood all day. Withdrawn would be a good word. A lot has been going on in the last two years. I've spent a LOT of weekends at Mom's, which means a lot of traveling. I've had a lot of ups and downs and being there for mom. I've not had much in the way of downtime trying to take care of things Mom can't, working

Grammar Rodeo #10

I hope everyone has had a great month so far. It's been a while since we had a Grammar Rodeo from Cia, but it's back! Thank you, Cia for providing us with another great writing tip!   The Structure of a Sentence   Okay, so maybe this seems intuitive. After all, we all write sentences every day, right? But sometimes the visual we’re trying to get across doesn’t work because of the way the sentence has been written. A lot of the time, this can be chalked up to dangling modifiers. What ar

Dividing And Conquering

Sometime in 2009 or before, I was home alone with my son when my phone rang. We had caller id on a huge globe, and the caller was listed as "Victoria, BC" with a number I didn't recognize. I let the answering machine get the call. The message, from a woman, was "Where are you babe? I miss you. I love you." I thought it was a wrong number as my phone number was unlisted. Except I discovered that hubby had forgotten his personal cell phone, which was ringing with a call from the same number. A m

Weekly Wrap Up (Jan 15 - Jan 21)

I hope everyone has had a wonderful week. It's been a busy week here at Gay Authors, but before I get into the weekly wrap up I wanted to post a reminder of sorts. With the recent staff changes, I wanted to take a minute to mention the various teams and the staff they're made up of. This list can also be found in the Help & Announcements forum. A huge thank you goes out to the site staff, all of who are volunteers, for donating their time to keep GA running smoothly.   Site Administrators

Kemal, The Story Of An Eastern Prince....

Presidential Inaguration

Forty years ago today, on January 20, 1977, I stood on the grounds of the Capitol freezing my butt off. The same weather system which had brought snow to my hometown of Miami the previous day had dumped inches of the white stuff on the nation’s capital; the cold seeped through the soles of my shoes making me shiver and bringing my group of friends into a huddle seeking warmth. Try having your feet stuck in snow for hours, when you’re used to warm South Florida winters, and you’ll know how uncomf

Circus

Waking up on a cold winter Sunday - the first news flash on my mobile tells me that Ringling Brod. Circus is shutting down after more than 100 years of operations. What a shame! I've never seen them, but I understand it IS a national heritage. In good times and in bad, bringing joy to not only kids but families, all of America. One needs to go back in time to really get thet feeling of" The Circus Is Coming Into Town"   On Awesomedude.com Seth Newman gives us a glimpse into the world of circus

Over When It's Over

So, my husband has gone away again. Work need him to be in Canada for four whole weeks. He left this morning. Neither of us even pretended to be anything other than devastated. We don't do well apart, over ten years of seeing each other everyday, living together, buying a house and raising our boy together will do that to a couple.   Four long weeks.   Don't get me wrong, I'm more grateful than anyone outside my head could know for the life I have, for the love we share, for the job which of

Moive Review: Out Of Iraq

Watched this really amazing documentary on Netflix last night. I’m sometimes struck by how men who have spent so much time embedded in a war zone can afterward convey this sense of utter calm and inner peace even in the face of huge life obstacles. Nayyef conveys that sensibility in interview clips in this documentary, no matter whether his post-war life is despairing or joyful.   This documentary brings us an example of steadfast love between these two men through years of hardships.
