Site Administrator Popular Post wildone Posted June 4, 2019 Site Administrator Popular Post Posted June 4, 2019 For those of you in the Northern Hemisphere and have been waiting for the arrival of summer, now that it is here, are you taking any summer holidays and what are you doing or planning to do? Me, I have the last week of July and the first week of August off this year. Last year I did a trek down to Ontario and back, and that was enough driving for a couple of years. I think I'm staying a bit closer to home. The first week I'll probably take my nephews, 7, 10, 13 camping for a week to the Western slopes of the Rockies to a place called Kikomun Creek on Lake Kookanusa. https://www.google.ca/maps/@49.2501852,-115.2459296,2670m/data=!3m1!1e3 Then the second week, probably head out to see some family in the Lower Mainland, before @Slytherin invades the area next summer https://www.google.ca/maps/dir/Vancouver,+BC/Calgary,+AB/@50.2511664,-120.8381493,693649m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x548673f143a94fb3:0xbb9196ea9b81f38b!2m2!1d-123.1207375!2d49.2827291!1m5!1m1!1s0x537170039f843fd5:0x266d3bb1b652b63a!2m2!1d-114.0708459!2d51.0486151!3e0 So, show me where you're going, what you doing and who knows, maybe next year I might find somewhere else to go to Since my invite to visit the mountain people of 'tucky to run moonshine with @Krista has been revoked 11 5
Popular Post TetRefine Posted June 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 4, 2019 That camping trip sounds like a lot of fun (and work with three boys!) I have a pretty busy summer ahead of me... June- Leaving my current job, moving to New York City, and of course NYC World Pride at the end of the month. July- Taking the month off from work, a weekend in Fire Island for Pines Party, and a weekend in Asbury Park to chill at the beach. August- Starting my new job, long weekend in Chicago for Market Days, and finally finishing up graduate school. 7 2
Site Administrator Popular Post Cia Posted June 4, 2019 Site Administrator Popular Post Posted June 4, 2019 Well, I have the summer "off" from working at the school day to day, but I am schlepping my kids and their friends around since I work in their district all my days off are their days off too. My son has a Track camp one week in mid-July, my daughter is still practicing driving (her driver's test is tomorrow but she won't be 16 for another 9 months!) and I have a week of full day Special Education training sessions at the end of July plus a whole lot of math and reading curriculum I'm still trying to re-learn for the K-5 kids I work with. Name a polygon with obtuse and acute angles, one set of parallel sides, and two lines of symmetry, anyone, anyone? Or how about when exactly do you spell words with c versus k? Or ck? It's all about the vowels! Plus I'm woefully unprepared on the phonemes and graphemes lesson plans I need to transition to next year with one of my kiddos. Yep, my summer vacation is less of a vacation and more like chauffer (or side seat supervisor), chef, bank to my own 2 kids and one long study session so I can be more than one lesson ahead of the kids I'm trying to teach next year. LOL 8 3
Popular Post Carlos Hazday Posted June 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 4, 2019 Staying in Florida this summer and exploring the state on the motorcycle. Starting with a few days in Tampa to check out the Department of Defense's Warrior Games. A little research for a future story's involved. Spending a week working my way down the Keys to Key West in July. A little snorkeling, a little fishing, and some carousing once I get to the end of US1. In August. I'm riding to Orlando for a college football game and spending a few days in Central Florida. That month, my collegiate fraternity's holding its convention in Atlanta. I canceled my attendance in protest over Georgia's restrictive abortion law. I'll spend my money elsewhere. 8 4

Popular Post Mikiesboy Posted June 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 4, 2019 I had my summer vacation in May... 3 weeks with the niece from England. We did all the tourist stuff, showed her some cool places and food in T.O. i have some more vacay coming but haven't booked it yet. i am not a fan of summer heat ... usually work cuz it's cooler. Maybe i'll book some days off in the Fall and i have a few days off over Christmas. 12 1
Popular Post mollyhousemouse Posted June 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 4, 2019 we'll do some long weekends and visit San Antonio, maybe the coast. we'll probably stay at campgrounds that have little cabins to rent. 9 2
Popular Post MacGreg Posted June 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 4, 2019 I usually do short stay-cations around Colorado because I'm never able to take more than a few days off at a time. However, at the end of August I actually have a whole week off, so I'm deciding on where to go/what to do with that precious time. 8 3
Site Administrator Popular Post Valkyrie Posted June 4, 2019 Site Administrator Popular Post Posted June 4, 2019 I'm not going anywhere myself... just a couple of long weekends. My BFFs son graduates from high school at the end of the month, so I'll go see him graduate and celebrate with her family. I may do a long weekend/wine tour in the Finger Lakes with my mom as a thank you for all the work around my house she's been helping with. My major vacation this year will be a staycation in August. @Cole Matthews and his husband are going to come visit for a week, so I'll show them around the area. We're also planning a night/day in Toronto. 7 1

LOL Man do I hear you on learning the lesson plans. One thing a lot of people don't realize about teaching is that the way things are taught now is radically different (mostly for the better) then the way we learned in school. Having taught kindergarten, first, and second grade math has been a revolutionary experience for me in the way I think about the fundamentals of math. I'm moving to a new school in a new city in a new state that uses a completely different curriculum then what I teach now. So like you, a big chunk of my summer will be devoted to learning it so I can actually teach it to my kiddos when the school year comes around. If you think teachers just get one, long vacation in July and August, you are sorely mistaken. 9 1
Popular Post M1984 Posted June 5, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 5, 2019 No planned vacation for me, but I do live on the beach, and I am down on it almost every morning. Usually on long walks to try keep in shape. It's a tourist spot so there's ice cream parlors, a couple of pubs and restaurants to stop at, too. That said, the weather here's not that great. We're lucky if we get more than a few weeks of "summer weather". 6 1
Popular Post Thorn Wilde Posted June 5, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 5, 2019 I'm going to Finland with my parents for a couple of weeks late July. We have a summer cabin in the woods but walking distance from the beach, so that's always lovely. Unfortunately, my boyfriend has to work. In August I have a week pass to a music festival here in town which, sadly, again will be without boyfriend because I bought it before I knew he would definitely be living here... I feel like the worst boyfriend ever, lol! But we'll do nice things together when he does have time off. 5 1

Former Member Posted June 6, 2019 Posted June 6, 2019 As usual, I will be attending Frameline43. The world’s oldest and largest (continuing) LGBTQ+ film festival. I have a Castro Pass, so I’ll be camping out in the theater for almost the entire festival. It’s extremely draining on me physically because I face a 90-120 minute commute back and forth on transit every day. The film festival is how I celebrate Pride. There are always movies I would never have thought might interest me that have proven exciting. And there are always movies that will do the festival circuit and then disappear (although many of the less commercial ones now show up on streaming sites or YouTube). There are lots of other events taking place during the same period in San Francisco. There are Trans March on Friday, the 28th and Dyke March on Saturday, the 29th. And on Sunday, a huge mass of people gather on Market St downtown – I’ll watch parts of it on a tape-delay broadcast over the air later that evening. The City will be packed and hotel/motel/rentals will be priced sky-high, but there will always be clueless tourists who are shocked to see LGBTQ+ people en masse. ;–)

I'm still waiting for summer to actually arrive here in the West of Ireland. We're exactly two weeks shy of the summer solstice (or midsummer, as some people like to call it) and, apart from the days being a lot longer than they were a few months ago, you'd hardly know it was summer here at all. I've nothing definite planned yet, although a friend and myself are tentatively talking about doing a road trip through parts of Western Europe. I'm also thinking about booking a walking holiday somewhere in Europe as well, maybe part of the Camino. One nice thing about being retired is that I am not restricted as to when I can take holidays, so I don't have to worry about the extra cost of being forced to take holidays during the peak holiday season. Popular Post Slytherin Posted June 7, 2019 Popular Post Posted June 7, 2019 (edited) I’m not sure I’ll go to Canada next year @wildone so don’t worry I’ll spend my summer vacation in Sweden since I’ve already been abroad in May to Berlin and Texas... but one never knows, anything can happen. I’m a newbie in geocaching so I guess I will do a lot of that this summer Edited June 7, 2019 by Slytherin 5 2

As for my plans, we're doing a lot of work around the home, as you know. The kids are in a bit of a weird age where the oldest is old enough to do a lot of things and I wouldn't have a minor heart attack watching them do it.. and the twins are not. Since I don't want to have a heart attack, probably just the usual camping, hanging out with family, might take a family trip that is more kid friendly and such. Other than that everything is up in the air. 5

Daddydavek Posted June 8, 2019 Posted June 8, 2019 In July we will have a large family get together for my grandson's first birthday at my daughter's house and a couple weeks later we are vacationing in Branson and taking in some of the entertainment there. My granddaughter is finally getting her permit so she can get driving experience and I expect I shall have a role there too. 2 3
BabyXander1990 Posted July 4, 2019 Posted July 4, 2019 Being with Dennis kids and our foster kids, I'm the stay at home spouse for the summer. First time in about 8 years I can enjoy myself and being a stay at home spouse is fun. Weekend since Dennis doesn't work, we go boating. Going to the Florida Railroad Museum in Parrish, Adventure Island, Busch Gardens and in August, we are going to Pennsylvania to visit Steamtown, Altoona (the Horseshoe Curve) and Dutch Wonderland, then to New England to go to Lake Compouce (America's Oldest Amusement Park), Valley Railroad, antiquing, Six Flags, and hiking... 1 1

TetRefine Posted May 21, 2020 Posted May 21, 2020 (edited) It almost depresses me to look back on my response a year ago and compare it to this year. Before this all happened, we had planned to go to LA for Labor Day weekend to attend Masterbeat. We had a house for the week of Pines Party in Fire Island, but both got cancelled. We figured (back in March) that by September this would all be over and it would be a good time to travel. We planned on going to San Francisco for Folsom, but that too got cancelled. At this point, since we can both work from home, we'll probably keep staying for a good chunk of the summer up here in the country where there is plenty of open space and few people. I don't wanna be holed up in a small apartment in the city through a sweltering summer. Edited May 21, 2020 by TetRefine 2
