Occasional Poetry - 25. Spring Reflections

em>Many, many thanks go to AC for his help with 'Questions Answered.' It is immeasurably better for his suggestions. 'Frost Warning' is for Emi, whose big, warm heart shows in his verses. I inevitably make mistakes, and I freely own up to them.
Questions Answered

Is there beauty in a landfill?
Is there grace within the dump?
Where the dozer cleared the forest out,
how lovely is the stump?

Now consider well the on-ramp,
and its aged concrete curve,
though the moss and brush may green it some,
which muses does it serve?

We may never meet with pretty
where the function follows form;
no designer of a railroad yard
could ever make it warm.

And I wonder if I'm like that,
made for use and not for style,
on the crowded shelf of humankind,
was I meant for the pile?

None will say that I am comely,
but there's one thing that I see,
every busy hour of all my days,
your smile's enough for me.

Frost Warning
A Cinquain for Emi

Snow falls
all unwanted
on a green May morning;
are the spring blossoms brighter for
the frost?

You say
we're over; my green spirit wilts
in your chill assessment,
unwelcome as
spring snow.

Hmmm ... thinking yourself like onto man's advancements and use of the environment, perhaps less than pretty then other things and yet you have worth measured on another scale. I'm I reading your intent or have I totally missed it?
I very much like the cinquain. The form itself holds an appeal to my senses. The flow here though despite that the words you use speak of something other flows like a small stony brook ... burbling merrily along.

You read my intent fairly well. Thank you for reading with enough care to see it. I am so glad you liked the cinquain. The form is just right sometimes, and its ability to be mirrored, inverted or varied is very useful.

As always, Parker, I really enjoy your work. I loved the sentiment behind both of these. There is insecurity in them both, but also an understanding that it is what it is... the import is in that smile or that blossom... they are self aware, if you will... cheers... Gary....

Thank you, Gary. Your responses were much appreciated, and very kind, too. Yes, the insecurity is definitely intended, but there is more than acceptance and resignation, I hope. The blossom and the smile are both what we hope for, no?

'Questions' is a very evocative poem. I like seeing the images you paint, and like hearing the questions pose. It ends though with the mystery of whose smile is being referenced…perhaps this is love poem after all…? ;)

Your poem for Emi is beautiful and quiet, rather like the snowfall being discussed. Spring snows are never fair, are they?

Thank you for sharing with us, Parker. It's always a red-letter day when you post.

Spring snows make one question basic life choices, perhaps. Why on earth did I choose to live here? No, they are never kind, and neither are the freezes that befall some relationships. Thank you for your help with Questions. Was I, am I, can I ever be enough? But the smile answers these questions, perhaps.

This is rather beautiful and great tribute for me. I am quite surprised and wondered. I am very very thankful for the concern you people showing about me. Thank You for the hope and thank you for the poem Parker.

I was so anxious to see the Cinquain, :blushing: I read it before the other one. The 'Questions' too was wonderful poem. Like Ben said, it really looks like a poem of Love, rather than a Chronological Development.

I had read those both poems twice to soothe my heart. And I am gonna read again. You made my day. Thank you again My Friend... :)

You have been telling out your soul in your poetry. Those of us who read it cannot help but be affected. 'Frost Warning' came to me after reading several of your posts; it seemed more appropriate than a mere 'like.'

I am very glad you liked these. Thank you for responding to them.
