Occasional Poetry - 26. Solitary Cat

em>Thanks to Tim and AC for inspiration and commentary. Thanks to everyone for reading. All the errors. You can find were made by me and me alone.
Solitary Cat

I am a solitary cat
who darkly prowls to hunt alone;
I've killed an unsuspecting rat
and for like sins, I must atone.

Upon such innocents I've fed,
created for some purpose great;
and by my teeth their beauty bled:
they were my prey, that was their fate.

Unlike the dog, I did not share;
I lay in wait to make my kill -
no rushing pack for fox or hare,
no pressing throng my blood to thrill.

I've watched you from my corner chair,
unknowing in the late day sun;
and at your lovely form I stare,
while all my senses bid you run.

Balance

Forgive us now our sins, as we forgive
who sins against us too; so we are taught
to love each other well, and so to live
in grave reflection on what we have wrought.

Yet ponder deeply this before you sleep:
if I offend a thousand fellow men,
while they, their honest circumspection keep,
so that I owe the all the more - what then?

For if I have no need to pardon them,
how might I reconcile my neighbors thus,
my actions cry them to my soul condemn;
I have no coin, no payment to discuss.

So must I earn a pension from your grace,
and by your mercy keep from hell's embrace.

Until now, I am becoming to love cats for their cuteness and their little quirks. But now you have given an entire different meaning now. And now I might fear for their cruelty. I Liked the way you have pointed all the things in perspective of 'The Cat'. Nice work and well done... :)

Whenever it comes to Money and Mercy, I'll be voting Money. Yeah I know, its ill to think like that. I've seen so much mercy given by me, its true, And now, because of the selfish people, I am siding money. Strange right. But I can say, I am still human and not cruel. The poem was very great and made me think. Nicely done... :)

Thank you for these comments. Cats aren't merely cuddly, are they? I am glad Balance made you think. :)

I loved the last verse in "The Cat" poem. I found myself thinking of a vampire sitting in a bar, relishing in surveying his prey before the chase begins.

To be honest, "Bargain had me flummoxed at first... I just wasn't getting it. Finally, I interpreted that since those around him didn't need forgiveness, how could he bargain his... he had to rely on mercy and grace to to keep him from hell. Forgive them as they forgive you... didn't apply. Interesting, Parker... loved them both... cheers... Gary....

Oh, Gary, I am so glad you found the paradox at the bottom of Balance. It was just idle musing at first, but then...and the solitary cat was a little chilling, in its predatory way. Thank you so much for your comments.

Solitary Cat

an arresting confession

from a feline carnivore

or a tergiversation

on my human behavior

Balance

What an interesting prayer.

In order to pass it forward

I need to provoke aggression

Ah, the new dragon’s credo!

Thank you SD for your, um, colorful commentary. The first is a rather predatory piece, isn't it? Balance was one of those paradoxes that occurred to me during an idle evening moment when I should have been doing something else. To live, I must either provoke my fellow man, or rely on his mercy, I prefer the latter, I think.
