Occasional Poetry - 34. Heat Wave and Simplicity

i>Lighter fare for hot weather. I confess all the errors contained herein are mine. Too late to do much about them now.
Heat Wave

It's far too hot to hug, but we might kiss
if only we could range ourselves like this,
or maybe if we shift around like that,
our lips could touch, and wouldn't that be bliss?

This record heat knocked everybody flat,
the temperature the topic of all chat,
we wonder that for days like this we pray
in winter's harsh and frigid habitat.

But Helios will focus every ray
to dissipate the fog and dewy grey,
and beat upon the earth with all his might,
lest any man go coolly on his way.

And even in the darkness, out of sight,
the sun imparts his heat into the night,
our bodies made so hot as if to hiss
while we ignore the heat and choose delight.

Simplicity

Now let us praise a simple man
who lives without a data plan
he's often up before the sun,
his hands know work, his face is tan.

This man we laud, we've just begun
to cheer his talents, one by one;
he sings, recalls a poet's verse,
or reads a novel just for fun.

In new adventures, he'll immerse
himself in bikes, or hikes, or worse,
he'll overdo it, cross the line,
and then he'll need to see a nurse.

So lend an ear and so incline
ourselves to raise a glass of wine
to him for whim this ode began,
and may he blush, because he's mine.

I'm reading this while broiling gently on a bus home on by far the hottest day of the year. Perhaps I might have enjoyed a poem about cold and snow more ? ;) But that's a bit mean ... :) Enjoyed them both in different ways.

These are a sweet joy to read ... a soft sweet kiss on a warm summer's night, the gentle caress of sweat dewed skin ... thus the final image. brought to mind by Heat Wave.

And Simplicity draws to mind men I have known. Some worked the soil, some thrilled to the joy of cycling country roads, others found solace setting foot to path whether under trees, over hill or across meadow.

Thank you for these words. My muse has gone silent so to here yours speak brought me pleasure.

Oh, I am glad you enjoyed them! Perhaps you can think of them as a light sparkling aperitif or a nightcap. I will take the request for snow and cold under advisement. Thanks for your kind remarks.

The heat is not kind to muses. They go quiet while we pant like dogs in the sun. But I am happy that you enjoyed these, and the play on the heat we have had to endure. Some things are still fun despite the heat ;). A simple man, a good friend, a person with a smile and interest, this is a person to be celebrated. Thank you for your lovely comments, as they have brightened my day.

I can see all the 'Parker'ness lurk around the poems. I enjoyed them thoroughly. They are very beautiful poems.

But my favorite one is Simplicity, without doubt. I am humming it rather than reading. It was perfectly presented and I can see the simplicity of every single and single word are just beautiful.

A worm kiss on a hotty day!!!? That another kind of intense and I liked it too.

Beautifully presented Parker... :)

I am glad that you can sense me in these poems, Emi. And I am even more pleased that you are singing them...you have no idea how wonderful that feels. Oh, and what a lovely idea of a heat wave...a 'hottie day,' indeed.

Good job on both, Parker. I see you are quite comfortable with... an affinity even, for this form of rhyme. I felt the heat, and yeah, I would make that same choice. I felt the love in Simplicity... very personal, and appreciative of the subject... enjoy your wine :) . Cheers... Gary....

Thank you, Gary. This rhyme is so natural, it flowed easily. Somme things seem harder in them heat, until they turn out to be easy...kind of like the cold, that way, eh? A simple man is someone to celebrate and befriend. And I will surely raise a glass to you tonight....cheers, indeed.

I loved the poems, Parker my friend!

I particularly liked the rhyme scheme, with its cyclical nature.
The cycle so befits Heat Wave, which conjures up a dome of corn sweat over the Midwest states.
But wait! That's a high pressure dome, an anticyclone!! Can one have an anti-cyclical rhyme scheme?!
Parker, you're hurting my brain! I'll go back to enjoying your poetry for what it says, not how it says.

Oh, I am so very happy you enjoyed them. We swelter everywhere these days, even in the cool north country. Even the Adirondacks are getting warmer! Now you ask important logical questions that can only be replied to in verse...which I will take up later. In any case, thank you for reading and reflecting on these two poems. I truly appreciate your feedback.
