Reckoning - 41. Chapter 41

Adam and AJ entered the waiting room, finding Ethan with a police officer. AJ spoke with the officer in private as Adam spoke to Ethan.

“Is there any word on Justin’s condition?”

“They won’t tell me anything.”

“Okay, I’ll find out.” Adam walked to the nurse’s station. “Excuse me, my name is Adam Potter I need information on Justin Shi’s.”

The nurse stared at her computer screen, then back at Adam. “Are you a relation?”

“I’m his emergency contact.”

“They’re stitching his leg now. It will be a moment. I’ll tell the doctor you’re here.”

“Thank you.” Adam returned to the waiting room feeling frustrated and relieved at the same time. He sat down across from Ethan, who stared at Adam with contempt. Adam locked eyes with the skater boy. He considered not telling him anything, but knew the guy cared for Justin. “He’s getting stitches. The doctor will be out soon.”

“Can I go see him?”

“Not until they’re done.”

Ethan sat back in a huff, taking his bitterness for Adam and turning it inward. “If I had only stayed longer. I could have protected him.”

“Or gotten yourself killed,” Adam said.

“Who the hell are you to Justin, anyway?”

“Justin’s my assistant and friend. Who is he to you?”

Ethan spoke, but stopped when the answer he wanted to say stuck in his throat. “I guess we’re friends.”

“You guess?” Adam gets interrupted when the doctor arrives.

“Mr. Potter?” a mature female wearing beads around her neck stood holding out her hand.

Adam focused his attention on the doctor as he rose. “Yes?”

Hello, I’ll be Justin Shi’s Physician. My name is Doctor Chloe Randal.”

They shook hands as Ethan listened.

“Mr. Shi’s injuries were not life threatening, we bandaged his leg and put his left arm in a sling because of shoulder and elbow strain. He will have to rest until he heals. I prescribed him pain killers and instructions on changing the bandages. The nurse is getting both prepared for you. Who will take him home?”

“I will.” Adam and Ethan spoke up as the doctor studied both men.

“I will want him back here by next week to check on his progress.”

“I’ll be sure he gets here,” Adam said.

Ethan rolled his eyes as Adam took charge of Justin’s wellbeing.

“You can see him now.”

Adam went to check on Justin. Ethan tried to follow when AJ stopped him.

“I like a word with you before you go, Ethan.”

“Can’t this wait, I want to see Justin.”

“It’s a police matter.”

“I told you everything I know.”

“I need you to tell me again.”

“Detective Chance?” said an approaching officer.

AJ turned and spotted the officer, he sent to be with Artie.

“I just got word that Detective Cutter is awake and is asking for you.”

“Artie’s awake,” AJ said in a whisper. He directed his sight back on Ethan. “Ethan I want you to give this officer your full name, address and phone number where we can reach you.”

Before Ethan could protest, AJ walked away.
