November CSR Discussion Day: Hustle by Talo Segura

    By Cia

Wow, November already. With the year almost over, I wanted to keep featuring things that kept readers guessing and challenge the idea of the traditional reading genres and stories. What did you think of Hustle? Share your thoughts below, but first, the interview!! Chocolate or Vanilla? I have to cheat... both! What's your favorite room in your home? Do you plot or write there? I don't have a favourite room and I write where ever I find myself alone and not being disturbed, of

Drugs are bad, M'kay?

Are you tired of everybody's shit? Can you just not be bothered with your friends infantile drama? Are you sick of turning on the TV and seeing idiotic bickering politicians pandering to the worst sort of thugs and the country going up in flames?   Then you might be ready for Fuckitall!   Fuckitall is an industrial strength happy drug. Your life may suck but you won't care anymore. With Fuckitall your life will be strawberry fields forever... at least as long as you can afford the prescrip

Update: Saying Good-bye and An Unfortunately Sidetrack

Hey guys,   I talked to Tim Saturday and he's doing as well as can be expected. He lucked out and was able to get the charges reduced to a misdemeanor after some cops were talked down. (It's good to know some cops, I guess.) He has a hearing to try and get his car back, and he'll have his hearing October 1st, but things are looking good for him, thank god. He'll just have to pay a shitload of court costs and the like.   He'll be alright, I think. Tim told me he went back on

First Kiss

First Kiss   Imagine this:   You are seated with your fiancée in a movie theater in the late 1920’s. Your arm is around her but your eyes are drawn to the man sitting a few seats away. You’ve had these feelings your whole life, but you can’t act on them. It’s illegal. It’s immoral.   It’s wrong.   You played around with your best friend as a kid. Those feelings evoked a response that aroused you like no girl ever had. The movie is about to begin. It’s a story set a few years ago d

Race: Does the color of my skin really matter?

I'm not black, I'm not White. I am just a Chinese boy, who happens to like boys and is blind in one eye. Being gay and blind is already a rarity, race for me usually does not become a major subject. Yet, I know there is racism in the world; especially in the deep south.   My oldest childhood friend is black; we're both blind in one eye and we're both highly intelligent. (I have a 132 IQ, he has 138). However, our lives diverge from there. While I got my Masters' degree and currently make upper

Unstuck...for one more week

Hello one and all!   Well, since my last entry, things did pick up. I found a temp gig that ends....next week. Yup. Then I'll be, as I quote from Titanic..."on God's good humor".   in the meantime, I want to amp up everything book-related in my life.   I want to thank everyone who's reached out to me and given advice, even just a friendly word or note; it is HUGELY appreciated!   Maybe NaNowrimo will get the juices flowing again? Not sure....LOL   Until then, pray that the job gods fin

Back to skool

Monday I go back to skool after all these years.   I got my computer science degree in 1986. There have been a few developments since then that I need to brush up on.   I'll be learning about the finer points of next generation fiber optics, ip/pbx systems and other new hardware.   I have plans and the certifications on the new gadgets will help.   Imagine that- an old geezer like me in school again.   I wonder if the freshmen are as dumb as they used to be...

How Long Till It Feels Like Home?

So I've been living here in my new place in the "new" city now for a month and a half. Everything that was new and exciting before has become routine and comfortable, and no longer has that "oh wow, this is so different" factor. And that I think is a good thing because it makes daily living more comfortable. Riding the subway, driving in insanely aggravating bumper-to-bumper traffic every morning, going to a new gym, living in a very dense neighborhood, finding new places to shop, etc. have all

Rip Robin Williams

Okay I have to let it out. I'm crying my heart out right now. I'm broken. My favorite actor Robin Williams has died. The second I saw the headline I started crying. My brother was making fun of me for crying but I don't care. See everybody growing up watching him I was amazed how much talent a person could have. He could play any thing. He could a hundred voices and all of them spoke to me. He could make us laugh . He could make us cry. He could make us feel. Watching him, made me want to make

Saying Goodbye and the Unfortunate Sidetrack

So, I took the Greyhound up to New York City on Friday, with the plan that I'd stay with a college friend that lived in Long Island. Another friend was coming, and we'd all go down to Steve's memorial the next morning. Well, that was the plan, anyway.   The Greyhound was over an hour and half late- the New York City Tunnels are an absolute nightmare of traffic, though it was cool to see the New York City skyline complete with the new World Trade Center. The one and only time I had set foot in

Oscar Pistorius - from hero to zero

Today the prosecution completed their case with the final summing up. The defence summing up starts tomorrow.   This trial's now been going on for over 5 months and I am sick of seeing the face of OP. The sooner this trial is over and this dangerous psychopath is locked up "for life" - 25 years - the better.   There, I feel better already

As GA-members, Why Do We Read?

As of late, some of you GA members may have noticed that I have been sharing some quotes about books, the value of reading in general, as well as some inspirational citations by famous and not so famous people as regards the value of books and reading in general, as personal “status updates.” As I happen upon these “quotes” in articles and books, as well as on the Internet – I’m an incurable bibliophile with an unquenchable thirst for a good narrative – I find myself getting excited by these lit

Gay themed movie review "Yossi"

This movie makes me feel so happy and depressed, because gay guys deal with a lot of these issues of moving on after a relationship. Yeah, most of us don't have to face the death of our partner, when we separate, but the same issues persists that "Yossi" highlights.   I'm not going to give you guys a full synopsis or plot overview: I will simply say this; after Yossi lost Lior/Jagger, he became a workaholic doctor and has a lot of issues with his sexuality, guilt over his dead lover, and simpl

the humble trilobite

See this little guy? He's a trilobite. His family of marine arthropods first appeared in the early Cambrian era (520 My). They formed the class Trilobita and flourished in all the worlds oceans. They flourished for millions and millions of years in all the worlds oceans. There were a dizzying variety of trilobites- numerous species and sub-species that adapted and specialized in their local environments.   Suddenly at the Permian extinctions, they were gone. One of the most successful marine a

Rollercoaster of Emotions

*passes out cigars* Well, it's a boy! My little nephew was born 10:29 p.m. EST weighing in at 8 pounds, 13 ounces. Mother and son are doing fine. He makes number 6 in his generation- I now have 4 nieces and 2 nephews ranging from 19 years to a few hours old.   It's been a crazy week. I had to deal with the fallout of my internship loss. I had to deal with the reality of setting up plans for getting to my friend's memorial on the 9th. And then I got to see my little nephew born, who's middle na

Age.....

So lately I have been asked how old I am.   I don't understand why it is frequently coming up and I am fine with my age. Really.   So the issue has been people don't believe me when I tell them I am 32.   When I joined the Y they didn't believe me and I had to show my license. I told them who would lie and make themselves 32 to be older? Maybe I would put myself in the 20's bracket but definitely not 30's,   This has becoming increasingly annoying. So now when people ask I think I should

After School Special Lessons

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I went ahead and got through the humiliation of turning back in my state I.D., badges, uniforms, and signing my exit papers. It was difficult and upsetting, but also pretty illuminating as I tried to put into words what failed about this internship- on my side as well as on my supervisor's side.   It seems as if there are two guys that I can be- there's the responsible one that developed in grad school, through four successful internships, and can be pretty

#amwriting - All About Twitter

As some of you know, I am a fairly recent and fully immersed convert to the power of twitter. I have discovered cool new art through twitter, bought awesome things, been amused by cats and found new horse-based free to boot. And boots, the guy who sells my western boots often posts pictures of new arrivals on twitter – it’s generally delightful.   My twitter feed is made up of three things: general and often strange musings; #cowboyhour, a weekly event I run where each Friday we indulge in som

Questions? PC v Laptop, manufacturer v dealer

I'm looking for advice here. I'm in the market for either a new pc or laptop. Money isn't the over-all issue. I want a device that has windows 8.1, i5 or i7 chip, 8-16 gb of ram, 500 gb-1 tb hard drive, that comes with whatever is the best word processor. Where would be the best place to look, the manufacturer or a dealer? And which would be better, a pc or laptop?

When Things Don't Work Out

Well, my internship with the state park did not work out. I'm pretty shocked and sad about it.   Long story short, they felt like a particular incident showed that I had not gotten over my behavior problems from a decade ago, and given that I had a lot of baggage with them from that time period, they did not feel like I was a fit with them. I was given a second chance and I blew it.   It sucks and I'm pretty angry at myself. I know I'll move on- I closed a door with ever working with the sta
