    Talk Talk

Conversations. Sometimes it’s too much, sometimes too little, formal, informal, clumsy, artificial, with another word: difficult. Let’s practice, Shall we? #253 Someone is on the bus. The guy beside them fidgets the whole time with an irritating tinkling bangle while telling them, it seems, their entire life story, including very personal things. It’s time to pop in the earbuds. When it’s time to get off the bus, the talker has disappeared and the strange bangle is now on th

Short Story Merlin's Crystal Cave: tie-in to Of Pride and Power

Merlin's Crystal Cave Some folks will be wondering, W_L why isn't this a chapter in your main story? My answer is simply, it doesn't fit among the displays of power. The main characters are on a side quest investigating one of those early threads I mentioned in my story about the connection to Merlin and King Arthur. I also needed to set up some interesting storylines down the road and make sure you guys know Eli and Robert have met a certain twelve-year-old wannabe highwayman  Francis

Of Pride and Power Chapter 17 is Live

Chapter 17 The war for the throne has begun. Two years have passed, there's a lot to unpack in this chapter. Without modern shipping and industrial capacity, it took Mary that long to build up her forces to launch a multi-front offensive. Scotland is still in the hands of the Catholic faction led by Queen Regent Mary of Guise, who is the mother the future Mary Queen of Scots, currently living in French Court controlled by Catherine de Medici, the de-facto leader of France during the mid-16t

Twenty-Five Days of December -- Day Twenty-Four

Tony Rowe and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra preform William Henry Fry’s Santa Claus Symphony from 1853. From its premiere to the 1930s, Fry’s symphony was concertized all across America and was as integral a part of the holiday season as the Nutcracker is to us now. Ironically, it was the music of Tchaikovsky‘s ballet which replaced Fry’s incredibly charming tone poem.  The scenes are: Introduction and Christmas merrymaking; Juvenile song and dance (sounding straight out of Aaron C

Twenty-Five Days of December -- Day Twenty-Three

A poem for the day.   A tale begun in other days, When summer suns were glowing –- A simple chime, that served to time The rhythm of our rowing –- Whose echoes live in memory yet, Though envious years would say ‘forget’. Come, hearken then, ere voice of dread, With bitter tidings laden, Shall summon to unwelcome bed A melancholy maiden! We are but older children, dear, Who fret to find our bedtime near. Without, the frost, the blinding snow, The storm-wi

Twenty-Five Days of December -- Day Twenty-Two

It's a subject of inexhaustible interest to me, and it seems every time I turn around, I learn new, incredible things about the people who made up this incredible organization. Only today -- about an hour ago, in fact -- I learned that Famous-Barr was the first department store in the nation (the world, I guess!) to offer Black Santas in Santaland so families could choose inclusion in their kids' pictures with the Old Man. And this was in the 1960s. The 1960s!!! It's honestly enough to brin

Of Pride and Power Chapter 16 is live

Chapter 16 Some may ask: W_L: Why did you do a Christmas Special? chapter? My answer is I wanted to create a story that covers various things, including the celebration of Christmas, which is a major Holiday. Christmas Fete/feasts were common among the nobility, but it's rare to see similar celebrations for commoners or peasants during the 16th century. Additionally, one thing I did not mention in-depth for the novel was the old tradition of Fasting on Christmas Eve during the 16th century.

Twenty-Five Days of December -- Day Twenty-One

“Shut out nothing,” or “Welcome, old aspirations, glittering creatures of an ardent fancy, to your shelter underneath the holly! We know you, and have not outlived you yet.”     Time was, with most of us, when Christmas Day encircled our limited world like a magic ring, left nothing out for us to miss or seek; bound together all our home enjoyments, affections, and hopes; grouped everything and everyone around the Christmas fire; and made the little picture shining in our bright y
