    Word Triggers

    By Valkyrie

Certain otherwise-innocuous words can be a trigger for some people.  Maybe it's a negative association with the word - a reminder of past trauma or a social faux pas.  It could be a word that becomes an inside joke - an innocent word given a not-so-innocent meaning.  These words make us cringe and avoid them and not really want to explain our reaction to other people.  For me, a certain spring-blooming flower is a word trigger.  I avoid saying the name of this flower because I have  negative ass

Eragon by Christopher Paolini

I really enjoyed Eragon when I read it years ago.  I liked the sequel as well and then I was so tied up I never finished reading the series.  I have them in my giant pile... but I still haven't gotten back to them.  I really need to, since I did enjoy the book so much.   Has anyone else read this?  What do you think?

BAD SCIENCE

One of Scientific America's stories this month is: New Data: Hurricanes Will Get Worse   New data from hurricane Harvey last year gives the author the ideas that hurricanes will be bigger, more frequent and cause tooth decay.   OK. I added tooth decay. He might as well add tooth decay because that is as easily inferred from ONE SINGLE DATA SET.   If I had turned in this paper, my advisor would have ripped me a new one. HOW are you supposed to make general observatio

Define "Great"

What is on your mind when you think of the word "great?"    Which story do you consider a classic?   Who is your most admired person?   Where do you go to get inspired?   When does a moment become experience?   How do you advance a civilization into the golden age?    *   *   *   This world is endowed with many great things.  Some are eminent, some are waiting to be discovered; some will become a memory, some will never extinc

The change

A couple of years ago I was fat. Not pleasantly plump. Not healthy. Fat.   It happens when you get older and don't change diet and exercise more. I got into the work, home, work cycle. I let things go and HOLY CRAP, HOW DID I GET TO BE ALMOST 300 pounds!?   No one was more surprised than me. I didn't see myself as fat. Other people saw me as fat and it shows in a lot of ways. People aren't as welcoming. They size you up in a few milliseconds and, what they decide isn't good f

I will have a Raspberry Pi

So, I have picked up a Raspberry Pi in order to have yet another toy to play with.  Though, in this case, it is so I can learn more about them.  I don't actually need one. Lol.  Anyone else playing with these cute little things for projects?

May Classic Author Excerpt: Stonegate Stables by Gabriel Morgan

Did you catch Monday's blog featuring Gabriel Morgan's sexy contemporary Texas story, Stonegate Stables? If you're a fan of his story, don't forget to download the signature graphic to share it through the month. If you haven't read the story yet, maybe this excerpt will help change your mind!    I chose this short excerpt from chapter three because it's incredibly descriptive in a way that makes you desperately want to see what the characters are seeing, for one, and two, because it

1st meeting

I did something today. Something I've never thought i would ever do. I met my brother who i haven't seen in twenty years. Me and my little brother were adopted young. I have an older brother by four years but I hadn't seen him since elementary school. It wasn't his fault that his mother (my former mother or as I call her egg donor) was a lying manipulative witch. And I'm being nice there. She was also negligent. He's a good guy, he was crying. He remembered where I lived, and asked to see me, an

Batman Begins

Of all the times Batman has been in movie form, the first two movies in Chris Nolan's reboot top them.  Batman Begins gives the gritty, more realistic and most important of all, less campy version of Batman.  This movie hit all the right notes and was only really topped by it immediate sequel, the Dark Knight.  (And then pissed away in that god-awful mess called the Dark Knight Rises.  I swear Nolan purposely trashed that movie so that no one would ask him to make another)   Anyway, Ba

May Classic Author Feature: Stonegate Stables by Gabriel Morgan

All you have to do is look at the title to know there's going to be a lot of *coughs* fun going on in this story. Because where there are stables, there are horses, and where there are horses, there are guys dressed in tight pants who ride horses... and... I'll let your imagination take it from there. Or, you could just go read Gabriel Morgan's Stonegate Stables if you haven't already!      Length: 221,486   Description: Against the backdrop of a horse stable in Te

Animal Farm by George Orwell

If you have somehow stumbled through life and not read this, you really should.  I just loved that the history department head at my school, assigned this book.   Far too many of the current generation indoctrinated on BS need something to wake them up.

Fitbit Charge 2

I have been using a Fitbit Surge for a little over a year.  Unfortunately, the Surge was a bit of a dud in the design category.  It was one of the few FitBits without a replaceable band... and guess what broke today.  If you guess the band, then you get a gold star. Anyway, I like the software quite a bit and I especially like the sleep tracking features, which I really need.  So I picked up the cheaper, but more useful Charge 2 to replace my on the way out Surge. This one also has the

Tech Tuesday - Reading Away in 2018

A few weeks back, our tech guru extraordinaire, A.J., compiled the reading stats to date for me.  I poked them around to see what I could see and I made a little pie chart for everyone.   Now, any math person will tell you that you need context to understand what that means.  So here are the relevant details: Data is compiled based on "reads" from Jan-April 2018.  This is about one quarter of the year. The data shown here represents 2.89 million views, which comprom

The Negotiater

I forgot to set this to post this morning... oops. This is one of those late 90's action movies full of one-liners.  And it features Samuel L. Jackson doing his thing as a BAMF.  If you haven't seen it and you like action movies and one-liners, this is a good movie.

Well, this week has sucked

For those who noticed my status update, my Dad was jailed over the weekend for driving under the influence.  He had gone out of town for a golfing trip and this happened.  I don't know the details and I'm not sure I want to.   Also, my aunt has an aggressive cancer that may be incurable.  We are waiting to hear on that as well.   So, things are not great.     I have decided to write a few stories that cheer me up, and usually make me laugh or smile when I tell them.
