November CSR Discussion Day: Hustle by Talo Segura

    By Cia

Wow, November already. With the year almost over, I wanted to keep featuring things that kept readers guessing and challenge the idea of the traditional reading genres and stories. What did you think of Hustle? Share your thoughts below, but first, the interview!! Chocolate or Vanilla? I have to cheat... both! What's your favorite room in your home? Do you plot or write there? I don't have a favourite room and I write where ever I find myself alone and not being disturbed, of

Weekly Wrap Up (Nov. 17 - Nov. 23)

    By wildone

Steve has climbed into his cave and don't wake him up until the end of April.  I think it it is @Slytherin's turn to stay awake this winter   That bear just happens to be the colour of outdoors.  We got dumped on the past week. No road lanes, no sidewalks, no nothing. All buried in snow. It is beautiful if you don't need to go out into it  Also, the temperature dropped into the minus celsius without windchill  Winter is here, I hereby declare. May you all share the wonder of it

More neko on the way...in January

Okay, so just wanted to let those who want to see the sequel to the Tears of the Neko soon know that I have actually started writing it. I've written the first chapter and I'm in the middle of the second. I think the beginning of stories can be hard to write since you have to set things up. So it's a little slower going than others I've written.   I also just wanted to let people know that the Neko Shorts are not keeping me from writing the sequel. I know it may seem like because I am post

She doesn't get it from me...

Okay, so last night, I discovered that my daughter (13yrs, 8th grade) was supposed to have written the rough draft of a story about a painting. And it was due three days ago. Apparently, it had to be between 1500-4000 words, and my daughter was avoiding the assignment because she didn't want to write. Obviously, she doesn't take after me in that respect... (Ask her to read a 300 page book in one night, no problem, but write more than 50 words--like pulling teeth)   So after discovering on

Birthdays and Luck

It's that time of the year again, yes, I mean my birthday. I don't know about the rest of the world, but as a kid, I use to look forward to my birthday and couldn't wait to get another year older. What the hell was I thinking?   As the Earth makes another pass around the sun, the year continues to turn and the date of my birth arrives again. This year I turned 45. The age really means nothing to me. Okay, so I'm older, but nothing traumatic or anything.   This morning, my usual luck held. I

Don't Pull That

Don’t Pull That   I’ve had a very busy last few weeks. My kid is organizing a Christmas Parade which turned into the Hubby and I doing a large majority of the work. She’s a wonderful kid so we don’t mind helping out, it’s given us some extra family time (considering she’s a teenager and actually still wants us around is amazing in itself), and it has been really fun. We made this massive castle, a train, signs, got tons of candy. I was super excited…for the kids!! LOL   Get down to the

A Year Later and 29th Birthday

It's been a weird couple of days. I turned 29 yesterday, and on November 29th, I commemorated the 1st year anniversary of my close friend Steve's death. Basically, I drove over to where Steve's old dorm where he was an R.A. and I spent a shit ton of time with him, and I got out a small candle and the prayer card that I got from Steve's memorial. It was actually kind of funny- I cried on my way there, but when I actually got to the dorm, I was pretty calm.   I didn't really do much for my bi

Better Than a Kick In The Teeth

You ever have one of those days where everything goes just as it should, but all the little things irritate you? Like the rough edge of a finger nail catching on things or a tiny stone in your shoe you just can't shake loose, something tiny hangs around in your brain and puts a damper on all the stuff that went right, all the things you did well, and everything that made you feel good about what went before.   So here are the broken down bits of my day:   The good thing, the thing must first

Hiatus.

Hello all,   As any of you who follow my stories know I've been very erratic in my posting this last year. This is mainly due to the fact that I have been living with my Grandmother in order to take care of her. I am sorry to say that on Thanksgiving she had a minor fall and her mobility has been set back. Due to her difficulties getting around I've been having to assist her more than usual.   Also due to short staffing at work I've been mandated to work overtime since the last part of Nov

A Change in Direction

My writing has never been what I would call really inspired. It has been fun, cathartic on occasion and sometimes I'll come up with something I'm really proud of.   In the past I've written stories with conspicuous drinking and drug use. As I was in active addiction for a lot of my life, that's my experience, I couldn't write normal kids playing baseball and living in non-dysfunctional families. I wouldn't know where to start.   The feedback that I've gotten from Redemption is one that has

The power of words: Responsibility

Responsibility is a word that has really been raped over time.   It means blame- Who is responsible for toilet papering Principal Skinner's house?   It means shame- The criminal admitted his responsibility and took a plea bargain.   It can sometimes mean burden- I am responsible for taking out the trash on Mondays and Fridays.   It often means guilt- My insurance dropped me because I was responsible for the accident.   All of those definitions have made it a word that many people are f

Michael Brown, May 20, 1996-August 9, 2014

The tragedy that occurred in Ferguson could have happened anywhere in the suburbs of any large American city.   An unarmed eighteen year old male was shot by a policeman. Mike Brown was black. The officer Darren Wilson was white.   The whole confrontation lasted only about a minute and half.   Mike Brown was confronted by officer Wilson who was driving in his police SUV down Cannfield as Mike was walking down the middle of the side street in Ferguson. The officer ordered him to move

American attitudes toward PDA in the gay community

I came across an interesting article which reported a survey on American attitudes on public displays of affection (PDA). It used several scenarios and the results were interesting.   Here is the link:   http://www.livescience.com/48820-americans-gay-legal-rights-pda.html   And here is the article!         Americans Support Legal Rights, But Not PDA, for Gay Couples by Kelly Dickerson, Staff Writer | November 20, 2014 07:28am ET       [/url] Credit: Aleksandar Stojkovic/

Heading into the Holidays

The holidays are upon us. Cards, gifts, shopping, and a whirlwind of activity are happening already and we aren't even at Thanksgiving.   People are already in the mood. Some have smiles and are singing holiday songs. Others are taking this time to rip into employees who have no choice but to work these jobs to pay bills. Some are happy and others are miserable.   This year I am facing things a bit differently. Dad will not be out of rehab for Thanksgiving. In fact on Tuesday I have a meetin

On Writing (and, reading)

Earlier today I went to check out any recent reviews of my current long story (Hercules III), but there weren’t any and then I started looking at the slow ebbing of the number of readers. Oh well, if there isn’t anyone reading, how can I wonder why there are no reviews. And, then I remembered a writer saying something about writing for yourself. Wiki to the rescue. I thought it was Elmore Leonard saying that, but Wiki came up with someone else. It seems Cyril Connolly (a critic) said: Better to

Suicide... why do people do it?

I've always wondered what drives people to the decision to end their life. In certain cases I can understand why, I may not agree but I understand. There are a few who choose to do it in the privacy of their homes while other's choose a more public forum. The reason I bring this up is because last Monday, I was waiting for the train on my way into work. A young lady and her friend were talking but I had my headphones on and couldn't hear what they were saying. The young lady looked down the tunn

My Nightmares

It's 4:30am again and I haven't slept. I've got to be up in 3 hours and I'm screwed.   There's danger in writing about old times. Sometimes you wake up old demons that you wished you had left alone.   I'm going to warn you that if you go past the spoiler you're going to read something shitty. It's one of my nightmares that comes back from time to time to torment me. I try to keep it in a little box and never take it out but sometimes it escapes and it haunts me to this very day.

The Long Dark Silence

It is my understanding that my readers generally consider themselves pretty lucky - because they get 'fed' new stories and chapters on a regular and normally rather speedy basis. With yesterday marking the end of Redemption's A Bitch, and tomorrow being the end of the short five chapter Six Billion Credit Rent Boy, a bit of a wait now ensues.   I am writing. The end of Tiger Winter is in sight, and it is massive now, standing around 120K, and into my NaNoWriMo word count I have also managed t

Are they kidding me?

My refrigerator has a reasonably small freezer drawer. I am a fairly old fashioned cook who likes to purchase and preserve foods in season so I went out back in 1982 and bought a chest freezer that served me well for 30 years. When it finally passed on it didn't owe me a penny and I replaced it with a new model.   That new freezer worked well until about a week after the warranty ran out. That is when the fun began.   I understand that the warranty having run out means I need to pay for all

Gay Novels?

What makes a novel "gay"?   A Rainbow binding? Tiny feather Boas? Magic twinkie dust? Leather on the HARD back?   What percent of gay sex, campyness, kitchy slang, innuendo or gossip does it take?   I have a strange idea that no novels are gay. They may have gay content, they may have sex, they may even have gay characters but the novel itself isn't gay.   It should stand alone on its own merits. Like a person, a novel should have its own character, integrity and ideals. It should define

Figuring out the Happily Ever After

New story for winter anthology.   Sneaky Peek: ___________     It’s funny how life can change in an instant. One event can change everything that follows.   That moment arrived for Randy Austin Taylor, affectionately known as “Rat” by his many friends at Denton Academy, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon during his fifth period Geometry class on May 16, 1978.   He was summoned to the office by one of the girls who worked there. His anxiety was heightened by the way she spoke quietly to his t

This dawn I let me sleep my full

This dawn I let me sleep my full And found a dream reward – A place within the living day Where recall too can breathe.   Two boys came together once more And though I've not seen them For many years, still to my eye They had not changed at all.   One hand into the other slipped And off they went to be Sequestered safe within their love As if no time had passed.   How wonderful to dream like this And present meld with past – That wakes and carries what I've seen Diffuse in me a
