I'm rereading the CJ. I'm partway through Walls today, at CJ's 18th birthday party in Vail, and came across something I didn't pay attention to the first time around. Chipper talks about possibly going to Juilliard for  college: "The fact that I play several would probably be considered a negative. I spoke with somebody who suggested that might be seen as a sign I’m not serious enough about one instrument to focus and achieve the highest levels of artistry."  Juilliard sure got that wrong! Good thing Chipper didn't buy into their bull.

The decision to send Chipper to the University of Miami was due to sage advice from a reader who happened to be a music professor.

I considered several options, and Julliard seemed a safe bet considering he's a New Yorker. When I mentioned I envisioned Chipper being a mix of Justin Timberlake and Michael Buble, the reader suggested the Frost School at UM might be a better choice. The connection to CJ because of Miami and the school having a good entertainment business music program convinced me.

There are usually solid reasons for my choices, but I seldom get the chance to explain the little details. Thanks for the opportunity to air this one!

Capitol Hill sneak peek:

“This is gonna be Liebe’s room when we move her out of the nursery.” Owen placed the suitcase he carried atop the chest at the foot of the bed. “Jesus, Mum, what do you have in here? Rocks?”

Holding her granddaughter in her arms, Pam shrugged. “I may have forgotten how hot it’s here in summer and over packed. I probably won’t wear most of what I brought.”

“Except for lunch at the club and dinner Saturday night, you can get away with shorts the rest of the time. Ozzie and I walk a lot, and during summer, we wear as little as possible. It’s not so much the heat as the humidity that kills you.” While the others rode the elevator, CJ had taken the stairs; he leaned against the door jamb with his arms crossed.

Owen’s parents, Geoff and Pam Liston, had flown into Washington for a week’s stay; their last visit had been in 2020 after their granddaughter was born. Originally scheduled to be in Mexico in early June, they rescheduled following Liebe’s kidnapping and rescue. The travel plan revision led to a stop in Napa to visit friends for a couple of days and catching a red-eye out of San Francisco.

Geoff glanced at CJ after placing the bag he carried next to Pam’s. “Aren’t you scared she’ll fall down the stairs if she’s here alone and wakes up in the middle of the night?”

Leaning away from Pam while extending her arms, Liebe delayed her father’s response. “Ceej, vamos a la piscina.”

“Not yet, Munchkin. The pool party starts after lunch. We’ll go next door after you eat and nap.” Owen lifted his daughter out of Pam’s arms before placing her on the ground and squatting next to the girl—a blatant attempt to distract her. “Who’s gonna move into this room?”

“Me!” Liebe ran to the bed and smacked the mattress with both hands. “I get new bed.”

“That’s right, Munchkin. And what are you not allowed to do when you move here?”

The girl pointed at the room’s entrance. “I can’t climb stairs.”

“You’re so smart.” CJ scooped her up and, serenaded by the girl’s squeals of delight, blew raspberries against her neck. “We’ve started training already, Geoff. Brad’s in the other room on this floor, and the dog will sleep here to keep an eye on her. We’ll also use gates to keep her put until she’s a bit more coordinated. But that shouldn’t be long; she already climbs them on hands and knees and lowers herself on her butt.”

Reading the CJ stories sometimes feels like being inside the movie "Arrival" -- jumping around in time, so that Liebe is 7, then she's a toddler. The premise of the movie, and the excellent short story it's based on, is that linear time is an illusion and any point on the timeline is available to us. I wonder it's like that for @Carlos Hazday every day, writing stories out chronological order and trying to keep track of has happened and what hasn't yet.

Don't forget about Liebe being 27 and getting married! LOL

For the longest time I've had in mind a continuum of events I realized I'd never live long enough to write about. I have oodles of notes spanning the years between CJ's college graduation and his inauguration as president and have plucked a few of them for stories. Cadet may have chronicled Ritch's 4 years at the Air Force Academy, but it was impossible not to mention things that involved his brother and the rest of the family.

The events in Mexico were part of that and I finally covered those, and Ritch's time in Florida right after in CDMX and Key West. The twins' birth I have yet to chronicle, as well as CJ and Owen's visit to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, CJ's presentation at the Academy, and Ritch's graduation from CJ's POV--all in 2024. There are also a couple of New Year's Eve parties not yet detailed.

I ended Cadet with Ritch and Lucy riding off in his new Porsche, but I wanted to share what happened to the two of them after. Flying Circus gave me a chance to do it. I wrote that one to also introduce the boys. I'm currently skipping around again. After Newport, I bypassed a couple of short stories to write Capitol Hill, and I'm doing it again by jumping to a trip to Cuba in the next one. I'm picking what I really want to write regardless of how it fits in the continuity. Hopefully, I'll fill in the blanks sooner or later.

Cute, yes; sweet, maybe. Depends on whether she's pissed off CJ and Oz recently. That story of her wedding showed us she can be a handful.

I remember Liebe whining at CJ's inauguration. (I also remember bj episode.) But I'm having a senior moment and don't remember her wedding.

Any chance we might see a pic of the chair at Rod and Taisha's? I've always been more visually oriented but for some reason as I age I'm having more difficulty creating images from text.
