Occasional Poetry - 33. Surface Mathematics
em>Every error, I repine, each and all, they're only mine.

Topological Tease
Consider now polarity,
that surface angularity
of curvature and swervature
that might lead to hilarity.
Play chess upon a sphere, be sure
your moves aren't ever premature,
for no position now protects
your backside, which is insecure.
Let's exercise our intellects
where math and living intersects:
the doughnut and the coffee mug
are both alike, the pole detects.
The cup and pastry make you shrug,
but find their poles, and don't cry 'ugh,'
for there's a singularity:
their number is the same! Feel smug.
Convex and Concave
It's hard to calculate a wave
distracted by the curves I crave,
I thought about them all day long,
your convex slopes for which I rave.
I knew that you'd be home erelong,
to circle me with arms so strong,
and I with research weary thus,
yet never traced your contours wrong.
Our meal was quiet, only us,
and talking was superfluous,
exhausted that concavity
our minds too weary to discuss.
But when I woke at half past three,
alerted by geometry,
you were convex and I concave:
I yearned for your polarity.
