timmy's poetry - 7. Salmagundi

sal·ma·gun·di ˌsalməˈɡəndē/ noun -a dish of chopped meat, anchovies, eggs, onions, and seasoning. -a general mixture; a miscellaneous collection.

Sunday

I hate this day because it always meant

Back to the streets in the morning

I’ve never shaken that feeling

Have tricks to make me chase the blues

that Sundays bring.

Monday

The sun was out today; bright and golden

It gladdened my heart to see it

After seven straight days of gray

Though it was gone too soon

And the gloom resumed

Its visit lightened my day

Tuesday

From a dove gray sky

Trip flakes of snow

Like happy friends

Out on the town

Wednesday

There’s a lovely dog right here

And he’s grinning ear to ear

Sitting there he licks my hand

He leaps up when I stand

It’s nice to have him visit me

Cuz then he goes home with his family

Thursday

The alarm goes off,

how I hate that thing

Every day at five for years, it rings

Just want to pull up the covers

Turn over and sleep

Cuppa tea in bed

Would go down a treat

Friday

Hubby picked me up today

With ulterior motives in mind

Took me home and kissed me quick

The devil was in that smile

He scooped me up, as he’s wont

And tosses me onto our bed

Later as i watch him slumber

Can’t wipe the grin from my gob

Saturday

Woke up early wanted to work,

but here I sit with tea in hand.

Mooching online, wasting time

Another gray day, with snow

Staring out the window

at the naked maples and

Evergreens

Trying to sort the salmagundi,

in my mind.

I think Salmagundi will stick with me for a while. Your collection of images and snapshots had me thoughtful and smiling by turns. I admire the way you turned your phrases. Some specific thoughts:

Sunday: Though you and I have led very different lives, we share the same feelings about Sunday, especially the afternoons, which mean back to work by Sunday night.

Monday: The sun, that fleeting and infrequent visitor to the cold, white north country, makes us all the more its lovers by its absence. Like the sun, your words brightened my otherwise snowy morning.

Tuesday: "…Like happy friends out on the town" is an image of snowflakes I shall cherish. This is one of your gems.

Wednesday: I enjoy the visit of a good and happy dog.

Thursday: The morning alarm in winter is one of the most trying parts of our modern life experience. My covers aren't thick enough to drown it out, alas. I wish I could join you for that cuppa instead.

Friday: Friday made me grin, both with joy for you and for the love expressed in this Day. "The Devil was in that smile…" was such a wonderful line; as was the very last.

Saturday: And yet you produced one of your frequent poetic masterworks. "…naked maples and evergreens…" are etched into my visual brain. I think you presented your Salmagundi extraordinarily well.

Lovely, tim. I felt the mood of each one. Each day was real... the ups and downs of a week in the life... salmagundi... a great word, and a great interpretation... happy Saturday, buddy... cheers... Gary.... xoxo

Happy Saturday! I wrote each poem on it's title day.. one each day of last week up to this morning. It was fun and kept me working as i haven't been writing much. Glad you enjoyed them.

thanks Gary xo

I really felt the sense of the journey through the week. Very haiku-esque, capturing that single image or thought. Thursday was way too familiar and Friday made me smile.

Thanks B. They were fun to write. I have to say Friday made me smile too. I had no idea Mike was picking me up.. I asked why, he said Peter is out and you and me got some making up to do. (He meant time, not that we're fighting!) LOL.

Salmagundi - a word I've never come across. WiIl I remember it? Possibly not, but I'm much more likely to remember these poems.

Each day has its own flavour, a snapshot of something that marked it out. Well chosen, relateable things but also unique to you.

I'd written this collection over the past week, one-a-day. I was looking for a word for stew, mishmash for the last poem ... so thesaurus ... oh, what does that mean? Perfect. Salmagundi it was and worked for the title of this collection. Thanks for reading it northie and for your great comments!

Each day a different mood, each a snippet of thought wrought in poetry. Not bad for online mooching on a weekend morning.

Thanks dugh. Well i'd written them over the week. Saturday this morning. But i have a story to write and a chapter to read for someone ... and i just had lunch instead...

thanks again dugh for all of your support

Thank you Parker. I'm so happy you enjoyed these. Each thing happened on the it's title day. Each poem what i saw or felt. I'm kinda proud of this collection. It worked and I'm happy. Thanks for your great comments. I love to know what you thought.

I relate to that. Spent years getting up at 5AM. Never liked Sunday evenings, because Moan-day followed, bringing with it a week of work. Grey skies a plenty in England and summer never comes!

Looking on the brightside we put an end to that, and twenty years of hard labour, for a new life in a new country.

Nice reflections :)

You should write about that ... moving away to a new place and what it meant. I think that would be a wonderful story. Thank you, William for reading and sharing your thoughts. Love it.

Hi tim,
very nice week of poems. I liked each of them, it showed so many facets, someone walks through in a week.
I had to look up the word salmagundi, that was fun, a cool word.
Waking up at five in the morning? *prepare you a cup of tea*
In the winter-darkness it is the hardest. But soon soon it will be spring. :)Ok, I know there will be February, but nevertheless.

"Staring out the window

Evergreens
Trying to sort the salmagundi,
in my mind."
This verse is sumptuous. I read it out loud just to hear it how it sounded, and it's even better than reading it. What I admire so much about your poetry, tim, is the rawness of heart you project into each one. You don't seem to strive to be perfect or scholarly in your presentations, you just put your thoughts out there in verse form for everyone to grab onto. You weave words together in a very organic, natural way and pull your thoughts along like currents of a stream that readers want to ride on. Really fantastic, my friend.

Thanks Mac. My poetry is raw .. once i was really upset with myself my lack of education, the fact i don't write like some other do, scholarly or perfect and i wrote a poem about that. It's here: https://www.gayauthors.org/story/mikiesboy/timmysjournal/46

I can't do it but i've learned, that i dont want to. I just want to be me and write my way. Thank's very much for the wonderful review and your great comments. I truly appreciate the support.

Yeah it is but my days and hours are changing .. from 5 am. I'll be getting up around 7ish.. working 9 to 5, Sunday to Thurs. So that might be better. And you're right.. spring isnt too far away. Thanks for reading these!!! You're support means a lot to me..

I don't usually read poetry but the title grabbed me. I LOVED THIS. Truly,I did. It was so relatable, except for the hubby loving (sighs wistfully). I get doggie loving, too and then he goes home with my daughter....and leaves hair. I will have to read this at least once a week... especially on those dreary gray days. And I learned a new word. I'll put it on a post-it note in my cubicle to contemplate during my brain fart moments. Lol. Thank you for the vivid imagery.

Thank you for your brilliant comments. Thank you. I'm glad you took a chance and read some poetry. I hope you'll dip into some a bit more often...it's good for ya! Yeah, I get you.. Brutus (the dog) is part shepard and golden retriever, there is hair!!

Thank you once again. I'm glad these worked for you.
