    2025 Anthology - Creature Feature - Guidelines

    By Valkyrie

I'm super excited about this year's theme!  There are so many possibilities.... Do I go with a cute fluffy kitty?  Or maybe a fire-breathing dragon?  Or an army of Norse penguins fighting Canadian otters?   It's a good thing there's a lot of time before the deadline, although with my prowess at procrastinating, I probably won't start till the week it's due   The guidelines for this year's anthology are posted below.  So now that we know the theme and the parameters... start writing!

Sneak Peak - Satan's Little Buddy

So (about) once a week I'm going to be posting sneak peaks to some of my upcoming projects. If something catches your eye let me know and maybe it will get published sooner   So this story is based on a prompt from Pinterest about a little boy making a deal with the devil, forcing the demon to be his friend. And Satan just rolls with it until he realizes at the time of their death he genuinely likes him. Since he can’t renege on the contract he takes them to hell and puts them in a high posit

Jon Stewart, Trump, And The Media

Tonight, I watched Trump’s address to Congress. Yes, you heard right: I sat my little, lithe young ass in a seat a watched the most powerful man in the world address the whole of his government. Amazing, an engaged teenager? What’s the world coming to?   Well, hopefully it is coming to a more informed populous. But that is beyond the point; it is what came after his address that I really want to...well, address.   There was an interesting article from the Atlantic that I had found when I wa

Attention To Detail, Or Loosing The Human Touch

Somewhat ironic that this may contain errors caused by only having my left hand to type...   my dad dad had died 3 years before I got engaged, so I wanted to keep my name. I also have some now obsolete software manuals authored in my maiden name. Our compromise was to combine, ex Williams-Smith. First issue is that my driver's liscense couldn't have 14 characters. The hyphen was deleted, and using the example, WilliamsSmith.   I have to bring photo I'd to all doctors appointments. So the off

Sorry To Hurt You

I'm not one to talk about myself. I'm a listener, not a talker. But here it is.   This weekend I was talking with my mom (well she was talking and I was listening) and she said that during the week she had an "argument" with my dad translate by she asked something, he answered, she didn't like the answer. So she asked my opinion. I knew my answer would hurt her, that she wouldn't like it but she insisted and I didn't feel like "stabling" my dad in the back (this sound dramatic but I don't know

February C S R Discussion Day: Harry Potter Fanfic By Myr

February has come and gone, and just where did the time go? I have no idea, personally. It feels like Christmas ended just yesterday. Hopefully you avoided the cold (or heat) outside and took advantage of some downtime to read one, or more, of Myr's Harry Potter fanfiction short stories that were featured at the start of the month. Check out my interview with Myr, and make sure you share your thoughts in the comments.   Describe your perfect writing space. My perfect writing space is someplac

Phased Array Technology

It sounds really scary but it really isn't. Actually- it is a natural evolution in the technology.   Once upon a time there was RADAR and it was good. It was very, very good and gave the ALlies a major advantage in the second world war. The technology was proven and all the world powers wanted to use it for civilian and military purposes.   It works like this:     Every RADAR dish is a dual mode device: it sends out a signal and it listens for its return. Ignore the math- it's really t

Supernatural Morals

I open this up for discussion or you can just read my opinion and ponder. Maybe keep in mind while you're reading my stories.   Moral dilemmas are a great source of drama and tension in a story. And having your readers question their own morals and try to judge the situations your characters are facing and their reactions is a great way to pull them into the story. Often our characters or plot don't align with our own ethics/ morals as the author, but we have to do our best to stay true to t

Today we're featuring a great excerpt from the story that shares Mark's great ability to create a vivid world for Mark's main character in the series, George Granger, to explore. Why did Mark pick this story to feature?   Mark says: My favorite story is: Odyssey, from the Bridgemont series. I'm really proud of th

Tell Me What You Hate

I've recently received some comments on my writing that I loved. And no, they weren't about how great my writing was, they were about things the reader didn't like.   Don't get me wrong. I love getting positive comments and knowing that people enjoy my writing. But I found that I liked the constructive feedback a lot, too. They were written respectfully and politely, explaining why the reader didn't like a particular character or why they disagreed with some aspect of the story. All very legi

Upon My Way To The Hunting Grounds

Upon my way to the hunting Grounds, Encounter I a mirror; To me I think, how so profound!— To me myself is nearer.   Confused I am, to see this face, Yet older, wise, and grey; The mirror forces, case by case, For one to see life's pay.   The pay is good, (most likely not) Beware, for danger abounds! In its clutches you shan't be caught— But wriggle free, and it astound.   The hunting ground is nearer now, And to it you shall heave— Please, I beg, to it not bow— For it shall be bereaved.

New Author Advice #2

Have you thought about writing your first story, but it seems a little daunting? Don't worry, every new author has been there at one point or another. Thankfully, you're part of a great community that has plenty of authors willing to share their knowledge, and/or what they wished they'd known when they first started. If you're thinking that you've heard that before, it's because you have, but that's the best intro to this feature. Back in December we first introduced the "New Author Advice" feat

Accident Part 2 Omg

So I tried to call my primary care physician for the name of orthopedist. The number is disconnected. Maybe I have the wrong number saved, so I do a google search. In Nov. 2016, 8 area doctors were arrested for a "pill mill", and prescribing fatal doses of hydrocodone. Mine was one of them.   So I have to find a new primary care doctor as well as an orthopedist.   Btw, for those that might remember, I was upset hearing my doctor ordering ammunition, same guy.

Secret Admirer Special Review

One year ago, the thirteen stories written for the Secret Admirer Contest posted in time for Valentine’s Day. Like the regular GA Anthologies, the contest let authors try their hand at short stories within a common theme. But in this case readers could vote for the story they liked best - all without knowing who the author was.   After the contest there was a guessing game about who wrote each story. Half the stories were so well disguised no one was able to pinpoint the author. Three stories

Flaming Assholes Of The Internets!

As I travel the wilds of the Internets, I am often astonished by the number of assholes that make such a point of being ass holy.   There are a few in particular that I want to warn you about. Beware of these ragin bastards. They make a point of being rude and obnoxious to bait you into typing something that will get you banned. Many of them are master baiters.   Without further ado, I shall warn you about some of the worst of the Flaming Assholes of the Internets   The triggered activist

Gazing Up At The Pedestal

I’ve recently begun reading blogs and listening to podcasts from published authors, with the goal of learning from their experience and being inspired to keep writing. Unfortunately, this seems to have backfired, because the more I listen to them and learn about their writing process, the more I feel like I could never do what they do.   They talk about discipline, setting aside time every day to write X number of words. They talk about using various tools and software to help organize their t

Unintentional Consequences Of St Louis And B'more Riots.

I laid the bike down yesterday when I ran into gravel across the road on a blind curve. Sheriff came, police and ambulance. One deputy got surly with hubby when he asked why there weren't warning signs out about the gravel. After all the road is a popular route for bikers on their way to Big Slick's Bar and Eatery and The motorcycle outpost. Gravel like that is a serious danger for bikers. Later when the ER is releasing me I can find my license in my purse, but not the case I keep my license and
