Timothy’s Terrible Prompt Stories - 15. Prompt 336 Oh God. This isn’t what it looks like!

em>Rob is back! And with some surprising news...
A Nelson POV chapter

“Oh God. This isn’t what it looks like!”

Eric tried to disentangle himself from me, but I refused to budge and just stared daggers at Rob who had barged in on us with hardly any pause between knocking and opening the door.

”What do you mean, it isn’t what it looks like?” Rob closed the door and leaned on it, grinning. “To me it looks like my brother is spooning his boyfriend and having a very nice time.”

I kept a firm hold of Eric’s hand, which had been making slow circles on my stomach and chest underneath the thin blanket covering us, as I sat between his legs on the bed. The movie had just finished and I had had my eyes closed, listening to the music of the credits roll and enjoying having my boyfriend kissing and nibbling on my neck, while his other hand played with my hair.

Rob’s rude interruption was annoying, but not reason enough to jump up as if we had been doing anything wrong.

“Yes, Rob, we were having a nice time watching The Hobbit.“ Well, at least the fun parts of the first movie.

“What are you doing here? Weren’t you going out?” Eric finally relaxed and leaned back, and I settled in his embrace with a satisfied smirk.

Rob lost his smile and slumped a bit. “Yeah, well, I decided to come home instead. Anyway, Mom’s home-made lasagna beats fast food.”

I felt Eric’s body tense behind me. What was he worried about now?

“Did Melanie come here too?” Oh, right.

“Nope,” Rob moved over to sit on the edge of the bed. We stared at him until he gave in.

“I broke up with her, OK?” He tried to sound nonchalant, but the scowl he wore belied that.

“You broke up with her?! Why on earth… no wait, scrap that. Do Mom and Dad know?”

“Yeah, Einstein. Do you really think Mom would miss the significance of me suddenly coming home from a date and a team celebration? I’ve already had the third degree, so lay off, will you?”

I decided to intervene before the scowling and yelling deteriorated into physical violence. Eric and Rob had never looked more alike, but I knew the hot blue eyes and the bunched fists hid genuine brotherly care. Throwing off the blanket I stood up and both guys immediately turned their attention to me.

“Rob, I don’t want to pry, but I get the feeling this somehow involves Eric and me?”

For a moment I thought Rob would jump up and punch me, he looked so pissed, but his next words made it clear his anger was directed elsewhere.

“Well, it turns out the baseball team has a few homophobes hiding in the closet, and my former girlfriend seems to agree with their opinions!”

I gaped at him, “Do you mean in the closet as…”

“No, I don’t mean they are gay… or, I guess they could be; who knows. But what I meant is that they know their views wouldn’t be tolerated by the coaches or the school. Plus of course Jasper is your friend, Nelson, and no one wants you to get pissed at them. But today we went over to Chris’ place to have a few beers before we went out for pizza. And since Jasper wasn’t there, some people felt free to let go. Bastards.”

Rob rubbed the knuckles of his right hand, and Eric and I suddenly noticed they were bruised.

“Rob, you didn’t…” I wasn’t sure whether my boyfriend was appalled or proud of his brother.

“Yep, I sure did. So now I’m grounded for the next month! Even though Dad thought the punch was justified, he wants to be able to say I've been dealt with if anyone calls to complain. ‘A symbolic punishment for resorting to violence’ he called it.” Rob rolled his eyes.

I couldn’t suppress my curiosity anymore, “Who did you punch?”

“Chris, once, on the mouth. And Ryan, twice, in the guts. Made him puke all over the floor, the drunken shit.”

“Rob…” Eric sounded upset. I went over to him and put my hand on his shoulder. He turned his head and buried his face in my T-shirt. I looked at my boyfriend’s older brother and saw the same protectiveness I felt. I nodded at him and he gave me a tight smile back.

“I guess we don’t want to know what they said, but what about Melanie? Why did you break up with her?”

The distraction worked and Eric turned back to his brother.

“What did the bitch say to you about me?”

“Hey, watch your mouth! Melanie may be my ex, but you don’t get to call her names.”

“Whatever! I never thought she was good enough for you, and I’m glad you dumped her.”

“Is that why you didn’t like the idea of a double date?”

“Stop making this about me, Rob! I didn’t mind her as long as she made you happy. But no stupid b..blond babe gets away with hurting my brother.”

I burst out laughing and both blond boys looked at me in confusion.

“Sorry guys, but it’s kinda cute how protective you are of each other. So it’s definitely over between you and Melanie, Rob? How about if she apologized and asked you to come back?”

Rob’s face took on an expression I’d never seen before. Not that I’d spent that much time looking at him, especially not if his hot younger brother was in the vicinity. But I guess Eric was familiar with this look of suppressed fury and hurt.

“Shit, Rob, that bad, huh? I’m sorry.” He leaned forward and bumped his brother’s arm with a supportive fist.

“Whatever, I’ll get over it. But we should go downstairs, since dinner is in ten minutes, and I promised to lay the table.”

It didn’t take a genius to work out that Rob wanted our presence to deflect any talk about the reason he was at home and not partying with his team. Eric jumped up and showed his thoughts mirrored mine.

“Hey, we get to celebrate your awesome home run, bro! I can’t wait to hear what your coach said about it.”

As we made our way down the stairs, I listened to Eric and Rob discussing the game with animation. Yeah, their mom was right; I would have to develop even more interest in baseball. But if I had Eric by my side, anything would be fun. And the rest of the season was going to be awesome; sitting in the bleachers with my boyfriend, the blanket on our laps, our hands linked underneath.

I’m imagining Team Rob chortling with glee. laugh.png

So, not everything goes smoothly and not everybody wants to see Eric and Nelson together. Too bad there are always those who think they have a right to express their opinions about things that really don´t concern them. Eric is very lucky to have a brother like Rob, brother who is willing to support and protect him.

Thank you for another great chapter :boy:

Thank you for another great chapter :boy:

Interesting how Rob is so popular and cherished by all my readers. He was meant to be a side character, but a lot of the action seems to revolve naturally around him. Whether by accident of due to the way he is...

Thanks for reviewing - now you're ahead of everyone. :)

Now? Did I miss my cue? No? Good...CHORTLE CHORTLE!

First, there is so much to be proud of in this chapter: Nelson keeping Eric in place rather than have them appear guilty...and for taking the heat out of the situation between Rob and Eric. Second, Rob standing up for his brother against the other team members, and especially for dumping that skank Melanie! :) Third, I'm proud of the parents realizing why Rob did what he did, and giving out only a token punishment. Let's hope nothing seriously bad comes of this, but the best part is the affirmation of solidarity between Rob and Eric and Nelson.

Supposedly the coaches will not tolerate homophobia, but I'd wager a lot that it's only lip-service and Rob gets flack from them and the other team-mates for his actions. Policy is all well and good, but having it enforced is another matter...until someone makes it a legal issue, a lot of places let harrassment slide by.

Rob being the center of attention? Well, he has wheels and will be more mobile in the school culture, and he's gregarious so that is to be expected. That is what Eric needs as he's discovering himself, and Rob being who he is, fills the part of protector perfectly. With time I think Eric will become more assertive with the examples set by Rob and Nelson. You are seeing what happened to me with my Jay & Miles prompts: something meant to be short term metamorphoses into a genuine story--consider that a credit to your writing such interesting characters! I hope you are finding the same thing out that I am--that the characters are making it easier by 'writing themselves' in your head...and it isn't as much work now. You have it easy being set contemporaneously, but I can get stuck over-thinking and fretting about whether something is right for the mid-70s--although I was there, I wasn't the most attentive to the world beyond my little town and my own personal concerns.

Bring on more, my friend! I'm addicted to Danish now! :)

For syv sytten da, what a wonderful review ! I'll try to cover most of it.

I'm glad you liked the interaction between all three guys. I hadn't thought of it, but you're right. They are building a united front and Nelson brings Jasper in on the deal too.

I think you're right that some things are tolerated, but then we all know that anti-bully policy is not always effective, no matter who the victim is. Go read Graeme's Leopard Spots for a good example.

Yes, I quite agree about the story taking a life on its own. But while you may have the in-the-past issue, my challenge is writing US-high-school of which I know nothing but what I read here. Thankfully I have AC to help me out.

 You know, I hope it's not just that I enjoy watching Rob suffer, but I like seeing him a bit chastened, angry and protective, rather than chattery, intrusive and tiresome. Rounds out his character a lot. Grounded for a month is a big deal... but then so is the hitting and the drinking! It could've been a HUGE issue if they had gotten caught.

I'm glad that you're satisfied with the new side of Rob shown in this chapter - although we always knew he cares about his brother. It's just the ways he shows it can be awkward.

On the drinking, hitting and grounding, please see my answer in the forum.

I won't even start to speculate: 'What now with the girl friend gone?'

It's always interesting how some people come out with their 'opinions' when they think the coast is clear. And to think Rob would listen to them or possibly agree. Anyway, I can see there is much potential in this new development.

Why not ? I was looking forward to your speculations

You're right about the wagging of tongues, though to be fair we don't know what was said.

Further developments will happen in the next chapters. I'm glad you think it has potential.

Rob's support for Eric and Nelson was shown by his actions here and it really does make him so much more likeable than he was (not that he wasn't likeable before). He's been prepared to stand up for his bro at a cost to himself on several fronts. It also sets him up for interesting future possibilities regarding who he dates. A great chapter, and now on to the next.

Thanks, Jaro. Next one will be up tonight, I hope.

Yes, dating possibilities for Rob... I'm writing of those as we speak.

Hope Team Rob will be happy, even if I can't please everyone.

Damn right Team Rob is stoked! So that's why they didn't lock the door! LOL

Can't wait until Jasper finds out why Chris is walking around with a split lip, I havea feeling that for a change it's going to be the homophobes that have a hard time in school!

You made me laugh so much, Carlos.

And I think you're right about Jasper being ready to join Rob (and Nelson) in showing certain members of the baseball team proper behavior, lol. Although he may chose to whip them with stinging words (if I can find out how to write them).

Maybe it is because I am in an emotional state but the conversation about Melanie really got to me. How stupid can she be not to know how protective and supportive Rob is of Eric. My heart broke for Rob. I loved that you told this from Nelson's POV of looking in at the two brothers...It made the whole thing that much more powerful. Nelson and Eric were on the same page instantly about what Rob needed, with no discussion necessary which really illustrates how in sync they are already. For all Rob's " interference" in Eric's life, this chapter made it feel like they were the three amigos. It amazes me how you have turned a little prompt driven story into a must read, life of it's own, story that is about coming out, love , family support between brothers, and being there when things get tough or confused. I never want this to end. And I am not forgetting about Jasper and his contribution to the story dynamic and the power of real friendship. You have managed to cover a lot of the bases of life for a gay man, without a lot of melodrama and angst. That is to be commended...Kudos, Tim....Gary

Thank you so much, Gary, I was awaiting your review eagerly. You always manage to point out things in my stories that I never knew was there.

I would guess Melanie is the standard pretty, self-centered, empty-headed high school girl, which is probably as much a stereotype as limp-wristed gay men. But don't feel too bad for Rob, I'm sure he'll bounce back soon. He's like a rubber duck, impossible to keep down. Irrepressible is the word, isn't it?

The three (or four) amigos - I like that. :) And just as Eric and Nelson will work together to cheer up Rob, I'm sure you noted Rob and Nelson silently agreeing to protect Eric.

Good for Rob. The people at that party were idiots if they didn't realize by now how protective Rob is of his brother. The now ex-girlfriend was also an idiot. After almost 2 years (?) together how could she not realize that Rob would not tolerate disrespect towards Eric. Maybe she thought being the girlfriend gave her a free pass? And those boys need to lock the door next time. Talk about awkward if that was Eric's mom. :lmao:

Yeah well, there has to be at least some idiot teens in the story or it would have to be labelled 'fantasy' lol.

Why would they lock the door? Nothing was going on.

Hmmm. Girls like Melanie really give credence to the term blonde bimbo. How can you call your boyfriend's brother names and expect to remain his girlfriend???

Oh well, now you have another character to match up

Great chapter :)

Well, I think Melanie has pretty much ignored Eric so far and Eric has certainly avoided her. So I'm not sure she would have known how Rob felt about his brother, particularly since all their conversations probably revolved around her or Rob.

But Rob as single is sure to cause some nice waves.

“Well, it turns out the baseball team has a few homophobes hiding in the closet, and my former girlfriend seems to agree with their opinions!”

- Oh, my heart goes out to Rob. What a firm and kind young man he is to cut his ties from anyone thinking unsavory things about his kin!

“Yep, I sure did. So now I’m grounded for the next month! Even though Dad thought the punch was justified, he wants to be able to say I've been dealt with if anyone calls to complain. ‘A symbolic punishment for resorting to violence’ he called it.” Rob rolled his eyes.

- LMAO! I love his dad! Such a clever dad.

Oh, don't feel to sorry for Rob. I think he was getting tired of Mel anyway. But it was a nasty way to have his party spoiled.

Glad Mr. Perry meets with your approval. He's a clever man.
