Timothy’s Terrible Prompt Stories - 8. Prompt 332 Try it again, and I will kill you!
Parents can be as bad as brothers.
An Eric POV chapter.
“Try that again, and I will kill you!”
Eric sat up and grabbed for the sheets, which Rob had ripped down to expose the substantial morning wood tenting his boxers. His brother had burst into his room disgustingly early for a Saturday morning and taken him by surprise.
Rob smirked, unrepentant, “Dreaming of Nelson, huh?”
There was no way Eric was going to admit he had been doing exactly that, still half asleep and happy. Good thing he had put his boxers back on after spending half an hour last night fantasizing about his handsome new boyfriend.
“Get lost!”
“How can you say that to your awesome brother, who managed to set you up with the cutest guy in West Hill High?”
Eric was unable to come up with a suitable reply and chose to ignore his annoying brother. He got out of bed, collected his clothes and stalked off to the bathroom. After a long shower he went downstairs and found his family getting ready for breakfast. His dad was making coffee and fresh orange juice, his mom was cooking bacon and eggs, and Rob was laying the table.
After some general small talk during the meal, his mom asked, “What are your plans for today, boys?”
Before Eric could say anything, Rob grinned, “Well, I have a baseball game at two, but Eric is going on a date!”
Their mom shook her head at him, “Rob, you should let your brother decide what he wants to tell.”
“If I didn’t help out, you wouldn’t even know he likes guys. Or that he wanted to join the drama club. And what about the time he fell down from our tree house?”
Eric cringed at the memory. He had tried to pretend nothing was wrong, because even as a ten-year-old kid he hated fuss. But Rob had blabbed as soon as they got inside. Oh well, the cast he had to wear for six weeks, while the green-stick fracture healed, was useful for bashing the head of his stupid older brother.
He suddenly tuned back in to Rob’s litany, “… and if I hadn’t said anything, you would never have known about those guys trying to bully Eric into taking the blame for the broken window.”
“Yes, thank you, Rob. We’re well aware of your laudable instinct to shield your brother from harm. But right now you’re preventing him from telling us his plans for today,” their dad said.
Suddenly all the attention was on Eric. He quickly shoved some scrambled egg in his mouth to gain time. But this gave his mom a chance to come up with more questions.
“Did I hear correctly last night? Do you have a boyfriend?”
Eric nodded and glared at Rob. His brother shrugged and mouthed ‘Sorry’.
“Is he coming here today? We’d like to meet him.”
The horrified look on Eric’s face, still stuffed with egg and bacon, made Rob chuckle, but then he tried to help his younger brother out.
“Mom, I’m not sure Eric and Nelson are at the ‘meet-the-parents’ stage yet. They only started dating yesterday.”
“Nelson, is he the junior who's in your drama club?”
Eric nodded again and wanted to curse his mom’s excellent memory, together with Rob’s big mouth. She had seen the Christmas play, and even if he and Nelson hadn’t had any scenes together, his boyfriend’s name in the program was apparently enough.
“How old is he? Seventeen?” Oh shit, she was going into interrogation mode.
“Yes, Mom.” Eric didn’t think it would help to point out that he was more than half way to sixteen.
“And I assume Nelson is … out?”
Eric nodded and tried not to look at Rob. But of course his brother couldn’t resist the chance of butting into the conversation.
“He sure is, Mom. In fact, Nelson came out to the whole school last year by being the prom date of the GSA president. But I think he’s been out to his family and friends for several years. He’s also known for not tolerating any kind of bigotry, and he has plenty of martial art skills to enforce his views. With Nelson as his boyfriend, NO ONE will dare harass Eric. Not that I would let them, anyway!”
The blond teenager hid his face in his hands. Why did Rob always have to blab and stick his nose into Eric’s business?
Their dad cleared his throat, “Ehm, that’s good to know, Rob. Now, maybe you could tell us your plans for today, Eric. Is Nelson picking you up? And when?”
“No, he doesn’t have a car. I thought maybe Rob could drop me off at Nelson’s house on his way to baseball. We might go with Jasper to see Rob’s game. Jasper is Nelson’s best friend, and he plays baseball too. Nelson suggested seeing a movie tonight, but we haven’t decided yet.”
Eric thought he’d managed quite well, until he saw his mom’s face. Why did she seem concerned?
Rob got up, grabbed his plate and glass and went over to the dishwasher. He was shaking his head frantically behind their parents’ backs, as their mom asked her next barrage of questions. Eric had no idea what his brother was trying to tell him.
“Which movie theater are you going to? How will you get home tonight, and at what time?”
“We’ll probably watch a movie at his house. Nelson said I could stay the night, if I wanted.”
Behind his mom, Rob face-palmed himself and shook his head sadly.
“Eric Alexander Perry, there is absolutely no way my fifteen-year-old son is staying the night with his boyfriend who’s two years older, and whom we haven’t even met!”
Eric gulped in surprise at his mom’s sudden outburst. Usually, she was fine with the rare occasions where he had asked to stay the night at a friend’s house. He stared at her in confusion for two long awkward seconds, and then a couple of explicit gestures from Rob made it clear what she was worried about.
He went beet red and stuttered, “What, no, we’re not going to…” before the embarrassment got too much. He leapt up and stormed upstairs, knowing he was being silly, and it might ruin his plans. But he was simply too mortified to solve the matter of his parents’ permission right now and needed time to think. Their exclamations of concern and Rob’s laugh followed him.
He heard his meddlesome brother tease, “Way to go, Mom. Now you’ve put ideas into his heads.”
