Timothy’s Terrible Prompt Stories - 51. No Prompt: Third Date Part I
An Eric POV chapter.
Once Jasper had dropped Nelson and Eric off near the restaurant, the older teen took charge of their date. Eric was slightly taken aback but also impressed when his boyfriend took his hand and calmly led him into the restaurant. They were immediately approached by the headwaiter, and Nelson didn’t show any of the hesitation or shyness Eric had seen on other occasions.
“Good evening, Signor Alfredo.” Ah, he was familiar with this place; that explained it.
“Good evening, Signor Nelson. Your table is ready for you.”
The waiter led them to one of the alcoves on the sidewall and lit the candle while the boys seated themselves across from each other on the padded U-shaped bench around the intimate table for two.
Alfredo handed them the two menus he had grabbed on the way, and smiled at Nelson.
“Your Padre called me and made it clear you’re to order whatever you like, barring il alcolico, of course. It will go on his conto, so please indulge yourself.” He winked at both boys, and Nelson nodded.
“Yes, Dad told me the same, so I think we’ll probably have a three course meal. Can you recommend anything in particular from today’s menu?”
Eric had eaten at restaurants with his parents and Rob, but it was a different experience to be on a date. Nelson was confident, and the waiter treated him like an adult, taking time to discuss the pros and cons of the various offers. Granted, they had arrived earlier than most guests eating out on a Friday night, since Nelson had suggested six o’clock in order to have time at his place before Eric was supposed to go home. Now that he was spending the night, they were under no time constraints and could enjoy a leisurely meal together. This date was already making him feel very special and grown-up.
“Thank you very much, Signor Alfredo, we’ll look at the options and decide together,” Nelson concluded, and the headwaiter beamed at him.
“If you decide on il pesce, I can recommend un buon sidro to go with it.” With those words Alfredo left to greet a family with two pretty twin girls, who were apparently going to celebrate their 10th birthday in style.
“What’s un buon sidro?” Eric asked.
“Probably non-alcoholic cider.”
“I guess you’ve been here pretty often?”
“Yeah, it’s my parents’ favorite restaurant; they love Italian food. Alfredo has been in charge all the time I can remember, and Mom says I was only three the first time they brought me here. I hope you don’t mind us coming here on our date?”
“Of course not, I think it’s awesome.” Eric opened the menu which listed the dishes in Italian with brief explanations in English underneath. “So, tell me what’s good to eat here. Wait, how come there are no prices written?”
“Mine don’t have any either, but I think I know why. The first time Dad took Mum for a meal here, only his menu had prices, and my mom’s was like this. They asked Alfredo and he said ‘Certamente! La signora should not concern her bella head with il saldo…ze money.’” Nelson did his best fake Italian accent and they both laughed. “Apparently, that’s how it’s done in fancy restaurants in Italy.”
“OK, so how come we’re both getting the ladies’ menu?” Eric asked.
“Probably because my parents are paying for the meal. Otherwise, I sure we would have gotten regular menu.”
“Or you would,” Eric replied. “Seeing as you invited me on this cool date. I shall have to come up with a suitable reward.” He let his foot slide up and down Nelson’s lower leg and licked his lips.
Nelson went beet-red and stuttered, “Ne…never mind, th…that’s OK. Let’s look at the menu.”
Eric smirked and went back to studying the options. After making their choices they chatted about the restaurant. Eric asked about the headwaiter using Italian words, and Nelson said he thought Alfredo did it on purpose to add some Italian flavor to the conversation. They both agreed it was rather funny and went to the décor which also featured several pictures of well-known Italian places. Nelson admitted he had wanted to go to Rome for years, due to his family eating here fairly frequently.
When Alfredo approached, Eric asked Nelson to order, so he wouldn’t have to break his tongue on the Italian names. The older teen had recommended the Vitello tonnato, veal with tuna sauce as a starter or Antipasto, and ordered Carpaccio for himself. Eric liked his boyfriend’s suggestion of tasting several things so they chose two different main courses with pasta.
“We’ll wait with ordering desserts, if that’s OK?”
“Certamente, Signor Nelson. What would you like to drink?”
“I would like a bottle of cider, but my companion prefers Coca Cola. And we’d like some ice water too.”
“Va bene, I shall be back presto.” Alfredo smiled at them both and walked over to the bar. He came back with their drinks and poured both the cider and the coke in the wine glasses on the table, and added water to the tumblers next to them. He then disappeared into the kitchen.
Nelson raised his glass to Eric. “Thank you for asking me to be your boyfriend.”
Eric returned the gesture. “Thank you for inviting me to the Prom and on this date.”
“It’s the first time, I’ve done this. I was a nervous wreck until the moment you opened the door.”
“You’ve never been on a date before?”
“Not one where I was in charge.”
“I would never have guessed. I don’t know if I can come up with anything as fancy as this for our next date.”
“It’s not a competition, babe. The only thing that matters is spending time together. Actually, I worried you would think this was pretentious, but—”
“But you feel comfortable here, and it’s also safe, because Alfredo knows your parents.” Eric was clever enough to understand this part of Nelson’s reasoning. “Don’t worry, Nelson, I like this place and I can’t wait to taste the food.”
The bright smile which blossomed on Nelson’s face had his stomach doing somersaults. Fuck, his boyfriend was beautiful when he smiled and those brown eyes shone with happiness. Without thinking, Eric reached across and took Nelson’s hand.
“Maybe we can go to Rome together one day. See if food in Italy is as good as what we get here.”
“I would love that.” Nelson’s fingers twisted to caress his hand, and they lost themselves in a gaze full of promises.
“Ahh, amore, così carino e bella.”
Both teens looked up, blushing, to find Alfredo with plates in his hands beaming at them.
He deposited their starters with a flourish. “Buon appetito, boys. Italian food is perfect for amore. Sì signori?”
Before they could answer, he winked and left them to enjoy their first meal alone.
