tim's Bits and Pieces - 45. Miracle

It was May 2018 when I wrote a Haibun about construction around where I work. It hasn’t improved. For a long while it was much worse. It’s hard to imagine that it will be better when it’s finished. We’ve had over a year with no shelters from the winds, rain and soon, snow.

All this construction is for us

Commuters who travel around by bus

We await a new citywide light-rail line

I hope that I live long enough

~

Sidewalks are a patchwork of old cement and new asphalt. They are uneven, and not the friend of we who need an aid when walking. They will be a nightmare to clear in winter. I know I will take a different route to work then.

Hundreds of hazards, dangers galore

It isn’t a neighborhood anymore

Yet it’s where people live

Where they sleep, eat and shop

The walking ain’t easy

But worse if you drive

Impossible to navigate, you have to learn how

It’s all traffic barrels and concrete barriers now

~

Locations of bus stops, and places to walk change daily; but they are never closer to where you need to be. Buses are detoured, waits are long and patience grows low. All of the city is affected. It’s expected to go on at least another year.

Lineless roads

are like walking the unknown

Where do we go?

No visible cues

But I need to cross the road!

~

On my old route last year there was a little tree. On one of its branches there sat a miracle. It was a child’s toy; a little winged pink pony. To me on that day it was a beacon of hope. It meant that someone put it there. Someone who wanted to save it. Someone with whimsy, hope, and humour. I couldn’t take that route for nearly year and when I next walked there the little pony was no longer there. I like to believe that someone took him home; that he’s safe.

He’s gone, but if you look, there are miracles all around us.

And there you were this wet morning

Pretty and yellow, still alive and fighting

Growing through the broken asphalt and gravel

There in amongst all those shades of gray

A glowing beacon that made me smile

Snapdragon

~

I hope you enjoyed this.
I was talking to @AC Benus who suggested i write another Haibun. I'd already written the last poem based on what i saw last Thursday. It was cold, gray and wet. So, i decided to add a couple more.

Thank you for the privilege of traveling your way with you. I feel cold wind and rain without shelter as we wait, and sense the path shifting beneath my feet as we walk. And I also sense your hope with you, especially in recalling the pink pony. Thanks again.

:)  Thanks, Parker.  I like this route because the bus stop very close to home ... but we are moving offices in February I believe it is. And if i change my route, the stop i need is right outside of that new building, both going and coming.  The walk where i get off for home isn't far and it's pretty nice usually. Thanks for your comments xoxo

I can see that traffic chaos in my mind’s eye as I have been up that way. Have to say, Im sure glad I wasn’t the one doing the driving.  I don’t know when it’s going to end, but I hope the vivid journeys you painted with your words get better (somewhat at least) sooner rather than later,

PS: I still get turned around in Union Station if I go out the wrong door and can’t figure out where I am  and that construction has been going on since before 2014.

Love the pink pony and the snapdragon. Hardy and enduring little souls.

I remember you mentioning that ride along Eglinton near Birchmount. Union Station!!  Egad! That is a mess ... trying to find your way around in there is nearly impossible. That's why they have reps standing around to point you in the right-ish direction. It's nuts down there.

Thanks for reading and your comments... yeah they are hardy little souls... xoxo

You took your great little snapdragon poem and made it the focal point. I love that! It's so perfect that you'd reflect on all of these events, plus their feelings, and build towards a point of hope. That is wonderful.

Great job

Thanks very much, AC. Thanks for the suggestion i write another. As you know writing stories is fun, but a lot of work and time....then there is editing and all that goes into that more months. I'm not complaining, only i found myself missing poetry. If felt good to write this. Thanks to you and the snapdragon... xoxo

It's an unholy mess across the entire city. I hope all of this is worth it in the long run.   Your series of poems and prose in this piece is excellent. Thanks tim xoxxo

Yeah, it is awful for everyone ...tracks are laid in the intersections finally, so those are open again.  Thankfully.  I hope you're right and it was the right thing to do for the city, building this thing... Thanks for your comments, Sir xoxo

and like @Reader1810 i miss the pony updates

Yeah, i miss seeing him, but i'm glad we go to!  After walking around down there and knowing what the street cleaning is like in winter here at the best of times, i won't be going this way to work when it snows. I have a better chance the other way. Thanks for your comments, molly!!! xoxo

Ugh, I know the feeling all too well. The city centre here feels like one gigantic construction site, lol! But, as ever, you turn negative emotions into beauty. I'm glad you found a few miracles. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Right?  It can be finished ... really soon.  Where i work is very close to the end of this huge project ... it's 19km long but extensions are planned.  The yellow snapdragon was a surprise. i wrote that poem first ... and wondered what to do with it...a conversation with AC solved that.

Thanks for reading and your comments.. i am glad i am not alone!!
