tim's Bits and Pieces - 42. Discontent

Slowly now, the days shorten and grow cooler

Only last week summer began—

didn’t it?

Time speeds up as we age

Patience shortens

The young know-it-all

until they are hit with the truck of wisdom

But some still whine

Taking no responsibility in their life

Not satisfied with what they have and are

Yet they haven’t the courage of their convictions

They bleat like lost sheep

Why do we protect them from lions?

i like this one a lot!
your ability to take these things from life that are commonalities and put them into words that make us say "Oh yes! I get that! I feel that too!"
also, the analogy of being hit with the truck of wisdom is priceless! just love that!

It's very true about patience and wisdom. One thought in my head runs:

"I'm not fond of people who are born into this world of wonders,

And wind up finding the only topic worth discussing is themselves."

The second thought runs to the classic "lol", as Millennials use it. It's one thing to be young and say something that can be taken the wrong way on social media -- enter an immediate "lol" after the awkward comment -- but quite another to processes these errors so they can be stopped before happening. That's how maturity builds within a person: knowing their actions have hurt someone. And....then....there are the A-holes who never learn :) Those can be kids of any age.

Thank you for posting this poem and indulging my thought-collecting process here. Muah

A very interesting poem, tim. It feels very timely for the current state of affairs with the younger generations. I think we protect them from the lions, because we don't want them to face the same hardships we go through. However, that is a detriment to them, as without adversity, one cannot grow, and we end up with those with an overinflated sense of entitlement.

Nanny states, weak parenting, permissiveness, overprotecting people has created a weak, anxious generation, where no one is responsible for their own lives. There is always someone or something else to blame. Thanks for you comments, A.  xo

This may have not where your mind went with poem, but remember: I am weird.

That is poetry is supposed to do make you think. You won't always end up where i am, and that's just fine. Thanks for sharing this.. xo

I think this one strikes a deep chord with me. You highlight so many things I observe in myself - my patience wearing thin, and the minutes in a mysterious hurry, especially. And the bleating you perfectly express is something I seem to hear more and more. Thank you for letting me know I’m not alone.

Thanks very much Parker .. xo

I know exactly who you wrote this because of … and well considering what he's going through, I think it's safe to say he's been hit with the truck of wisdom

Yes, thank You, Michael.

I enjoyed this poem, Tim. As we get older time does go faster, and young people seem to know everything, as they always have. One of the things I especially enjoy about your poems is how they always make me think and/or feel. Thanks.

I greatly related to this poem, especially the first five lines.  My thoughts ran to how this time of year relates to this time of life, and how I enjoy the peace and relaxation it brings, as well as the cynicism that says, "Let the sheep learn to protect themselves."

I understand ... i want to always protect my nephew, but sometimes you just need to let them fall.  He's in a mess right now that i (no one) but he can fix, but they need to learn to stand on their own two feet.
