tim's Bits and Pieces - 26. A Walk on the Riverbank

A poem based on a dream i had...walking along a riverbank of stones.

The river no longer rages here, it is tamed and placid
not by its own volition; there was no choice.
And I walk along, over the round and oval stones;
the only water touching these rocks are my tears.

I pick up a smooth spherical stone and heft it in my hand
cool and almost soft, its rough edges worn by water and time.
It is so unlike my broken heart, which feels jagged in my chest.
Thoughts of you circle my head; words I cannot capture.

You are the one from my dreams; the one at arm’s length.
The love I feel is real, even if I have never touched you.
I wonder why the universe would show me what I want,
knowing I will never have the opportunity to reach it.

I cannot live with you or without you; I don’t know what to do.
Sometimes it's not enough just knowing that you’re there
The ache I feel is real and I know you feel it also;
perhaps in another life we have touched and known the other.

I return the stone to its compatriots; it rolls before settling.
My shoes slip on this abandoned bank, and I wonder
if these rocks will ever feel the rush of water over them.
Just as I wonder if life will return to my lost and broken heart.

there was no choice. - critical words

You cannot help who you love. There is never any question in here about your love being returned. And yet, is not the one we keep at arm's length the one we keep there, we do not let come closer? In your verses the universe is blamed for not letting him come closer...

The ache I feel is real and I know you feel it also;

How can you know that about him, too? unless you just believe that about him instead of knowing. Maybe this is due to the dream it originates from...

Strong feelings but no certain conclusions. Like life is sometimes....

Tim, this is beautiful. I can see memories of what seems so far ago, along a river walking on stones. I'm relieved it was a dream, though that doesn't diminish the sadness in the least. Hugz to you my friend.

your comments are well thought out and insightful ... sometimes we need to keep people at arms length.. even though the feelings are there... we can't always have all we desire in this life.. as you say... thank you for reading and your comments xoox

It took me a while to find the right words to say. While a part of me feels the sadness that others have expressed, I also see the hope and love captured in it as well. The hope that one has that they have met in a previous life. The love that is behind the sadness; to feel that deep of a sadness one must have a deep love of the person as well.

I feel that you captured the visual of walking along the dry river bed, and the river stone very beautifully.

Fantastic poem.

boy, I usually read your poems aloud. This one is beautiful, sad and difficult.  You would have to have a heart made of stone in order not to be affected by this. Very moving.

thank You, Sir xoxo
