tim's Bits and Pieces - 88. The Unsung

Nights are long when sleep’s a dream
Spectres abound in the velvet dark
Memories lick your mind
like Cerberus’ hot, wet tongue.

Returning ghosts ask why you shun them
As if they’re friends rather than their truth
I tell them to go, to leave me alone
They are not company to be among

The wraiths rejoice in my cold fantasy
Where truthfulness is a holy myth
There is no escape from the reality
of music that remains unsung

Thanks for sharing this, tim.  I think it is a remarkable poem that I can relate to in so many ways.  The music it brings to my mind, though, is Mussorgsky - Night on Bald Mountain.

Interesting. This sounds wonderful and then you read it again and really consider the meanings.  No lighthearted romp here.

Thank you, tim.

It might just be my frame of mind of late, but the one line that stands out for me is this:

Where truthfulness is a holy myth

So many of us are chasing the myth when it comes to ourselves.

I don't know why, exactly, but I particularly like the second stanza. To me, it's like something you've had with you for a long time that you realized is poison, and you're finally shedding it.

Nice piece, tim.

Thanks Wayne.

I was also attracted to the second stanza, like @Wayne Gray. Together with the third stanza, I felt and heard strains of Beethoven’s Ninth symphony in it. Maybe it has to do with the final haunting lines of this poem. Thank you for sharing this.

Thanks so much for reading, Parker.

The sleepless nights are fewer for me, but they are there. Something from my past pops into my memory as I'm hoping to fall asleep. That's all it takes for my mind to lock on to that and run with it. Every sound seems to amplify, even my husband's breathing becomes an annoyance the more tired and frustrated I get.

I hope peaceful sleep finds you tonight

i'm glad it happens less often. What happened to me, mostly, i can keep it at bay, but i think it's affected my everyday life in the long term. It doesn't take much to shake my confidence, for example. Then i chew on that for days, wondering what I've done wrong, what happened.

My Husband would say, Why didn't you wake me up and talk?  I'm glad we both have that option.

Thanks for reading and for your comments.
