tim's Bits and Pieces - 33. Out
The other night I read AC Benus’ sonnets:
https://gayauthors.org/story/ac-benus/onehundredandfifty-fivesonnets/51
The second one was wonderful, yet sad. What the poem was based on came out as AC and a few of us were discussing this article:
The fact it denied that these two could possibly be lovers, hurt; calling it a bromance was disgusting. And it made me angry. As I noted, someone knew these two, knew who and what they were to each other. This isn’t their caskets rotting away and this happening by accident.
They were buried entwined.
I was upset that so many straight people want to deny we exist, but there is always some hope.
I told AC about the afternoon Michael and I had had. It was a chance meeting with an older gentleman in a store. Michael is the more gregarious of us, and it didn’t surprise me to find them talking.
AC related a similar thing that had happened to himself and his husband and suggested that we write about these moments because they are memorable, and because we are both poets, so things stick.
I decided to do just that.
Out
Today we went shopping you and me.
We met an older man.
He was not pretty,
but I won’t be if I live so long.
You talked to him like You do, so easily
so openly; while I stand quietly afraid
to trip over my tied tongue.
You said something about, my husband,
and he looked at each of us then.
I am so thinking, here it comes.
- me with little faith in my straight brothers -
He smiled and said: Oh, how wonderful!
And we stood, the three of us in
Best Buy, speaking of English TV
and detective shows.
As you do.
