tim's Bits and Pieces - 33. Out

The other night I read AC Benus’ sonnets:

https://gayauthors.org/story/ac-benus/onehundredandfifty-fivesonnets/51

The second one was wonderful, yet sad. What the poem was based on came out as AC and a few of us were discussing this article:

https://www.ancient-origins.net/artifacts-other-artifacts/eternal-kiss-hasanlu-lovers-throws-questions-ancient-love-romance-bromance-021587

The fact it denied that these two could possibly be lovers, hurt; calling it a bromance was disgusting. And it made me angry. As I noted, someone knew these two, knew who and what they were to each other. This isn’t their caskets rotting away and this happening by accident.

They were buried entwined.

I was upset that so many straight people want to deny we exist, but there is always some hope.

I told AC about the afternoon Michael and I had had. It was a chance meeting with an older gentleman in a store. Michael is the more gregarious of us, and it didn’t surprise me to find them talking.

AC related a similar thing that had happened to himself and his husband and suggested that we write about these moments because they are memorable, and because we are both poets, so things stick.

I decided to do just that.

Out

Today we went shopping you and me.
We met an older man.
He was not pretty,
but I won’t be if I live so long.
You talked to him like You do, so easily
so openly; while I stand quietly afraid
to trip over my tied tongue.
You said something about, my husband,
and he looked at each of us then.
I am so thinking, here it comes.
- me with little faith in my straight brothers -
He smiled and said: Oh, how wonderful!
And we stood, the three of us in
Best Buy, speaking of English TV
and detective shows.
As you do.

What a sweet poem! Some people surprise you. There is beauty in this world, in humans. I really love this.

That story you linked to is very upsetting, though. It's like when scholars are like, 'Nooo, Shakespeare wasn't bisexual, those 126 sonnets he wrote to a young man were platonic!' Sigh... History was written by straight people.

Our history, is in our words...too often they are rewritten, stolen from us.  Thanks, Thorn.

This poem made me smile and want to celebrate, as you have done here. What a welcome counterweight to those who deny and denigrate and disparage.

Thanks very much, Parker. He was a nice guy.

it was .. they were talking about hard drives and torrent sites.. Paul wanted to join one that Michael uses, so Michael took his email and sent him an invite to it. Michael can just chat to anyone. I think we were there about twenty minutes.

Your Michael must be like several people in my family (and life). We jokingly say " He's never met a stranger!" I think I am more like you. I tend to hold back a bit. Your poem really captured the moment when "Never met a stranger" engages one and you realize it is safe to join the conversation. Some of these serendipitous moments are most enjoyable! Thanks for sharing.

Yeah Michael will happily chat to anyone who is willing. He's very out going and very well spoken. Not like me. I can write, but dont ask me to talk, i'm not so good at it.

This is a hard poem for me to respond too. I like the introduction you gave, and your poem is as stellar as it always is. The subject matter that you wrote about on the outing you and Mike had was terrific. The hard part for me was the article you linked too. I have no words right now.

Based on your intro, I was expecting something different in the poem. The happy response from the older gentleman was wonderful, as it the poem :)
