Into the fields of Summer - 15. Days in the Sun 8

Chapter 15 - Days in the Sun

I woke up again at 8am and decided to start my day. I cooked myself and dad some eggs and toast.

Over breakfast, Dad and I talked about my plans for college. “Dad, I honestly don’t know what I should major in, and I don’t even know which college or university to attend, although I’ve already sent out the applications but I’m still quite torn, no, not torn, confused” I sighed in confusion as I looked at dad with pleading eyes to help me with my dilemma.

“Well son, I’m not gonna force to you study something you don’t want, well you’re more than good with everything we’ve studied, I’m sure you’ll get accepted into a program that you’d set your eyes on” he said.

“I hope so dad, but I’m really confused, sigh”

“Well, don’t worry about it too much, let’s just keep at maintaining your good performance and set our eyes on you acing the matriculation test, placing at least on the 95th percentile will get you into most colleges in the state, so let’s just work on that for now” dad said. He then continued “Your SAT score from last year was more than enough as well, your 1480 puts you at the 98th percentile!, so don’t worry about it, you’re more than qualified, let’s just do what we do best, and that’s work and learn together” dad said as he tried to reassure me.

Victor and I invited Leo to join us for lunch at the Diner which he readily agreed to. Victor picked us up just before noon and we were soon eating our way through a set of cheese burgers and fries for lunch.

“Leo..., Since we have a break over this coming weekend from soccer and all, Victor and I thought of having a short roadtrip maybe spend the overnight along Skyline Drive at Shenandoah National Park, wanna join us?” I asked.

Leo looked at the both of us and said “are you sure, like won’t I like be bothering your date night or something?” He shyly asked looking at both and Victor.

“Of course not! We’ve got more time to ourselves already” Victor interjected and winked at Leo.

“Oh hehe, well... if you insist, I’ll just have to ask my parents but most likely they’ll say yes” Leo said.

“Awesome!” I nearly shouted as I hugged Leo from across the table.

“Geez, calm down will you, it’s just a short trip Chris” Leo snickered as I untangled myself from our hug.

“Haha, whatever, well... I like hanging with my best friend, so deal with it” I said as he smirked at him playfully.

The week went by quickly, our practice sessions were less intensive as we didn’t have a game during the coming saturday but coach was still flagging us every time he noticed us faltering or losing concentration. The boys from the team really took a good liking with Victor and every now and then I can see them sharing a good laugh or two before or after practice.

Saturday morning came and Victor picked Leo and I from our homes at 7:30, for the 2 and half drive to Front Royal at Skyline drive, where we planned to start the scenic drive southward.

“Early morning eh” Leo said rubbing his eyes as he entered the back of Victor’s car.

“Yeah, but this should be worth it” Victor said.

“Oh I bet. This is one of the most beautiful roadways in the country!” I reassured both of them.

We sang along some pop and country music as we drove along the winding roads of the country.
I started to realize that Victor had a very good singing voice.

Hungry, we three dropped by a Diner along the way and just after 10am we were already paying for our entrance fees at Shenandoah National Park. Skyline drive is A 105 mile (169km) road within the National Park that offers scenic views of the surrounding mountains and forests, the route is dotted with overlooks that allow visitors to see the sights - valleys covered with forests of changing colors, or views of the mountains far off the West.

The drive was slow within the park as there was a strict speed limit involved as a precaution for wild animal crossings and pedestrians and cyclists as well.

The leaves around us have started to change colors from green to yellow and orange, the drive along the road with the windows down, us three enjoying the scenery and fresh air. This being so close to nature, for some reason have me so much comfort. The air was absolutely fresh and the scenery awe inspiring.

We stopped the car several times along the way as we checked out the various overlooks, we three took pictures and selfies too. We dropped by the Shenandoah Valley Overlook, Gooney Knob Overlook, Thornton Hollow Overlook, and many more. The autumn tinged leaves telling us that the seasons are indeed changing.

We were treated with amazing views, the sights of leaves changing colors and with the backdrop of the blue ridge mountains several miles away were really mesmerizing. We drove by Mary’s Rock Tunnel too.

We then found our way to Skyland Resort where we were booked for a nights stay. Before checking in we decided to have a decent lunch. We decided to rent a cabin for the night, the cabin had 2 bedrooms and had modern amenities but had a very rustic and nature-y vibe to it.

We decided to visit dark hallow falls in the afternoon. We drove to the Dark Hallows parking and we hiked the 0.7 mile trail to the falls. The falls had a 70 foot drop and it was surrounded by lush vegetation, of various trees whose leaves have started to turn. We took more pictures and spent several minutes enjoying the scenery together with several other hikers. We then went back to the parking and made our way back to the cabin.

We ate a hearty dinner to re-energize ourselves and we three basically joked around all evening. We all retired to our respective bedrooms by 10pm, with me and Victor sharing a room and Leo having his own. No lovemaking for Victor and myself, we just snuggled together, enjoying each other’s touch and warmth. Sometimes all it takes for me to get comfortable is the touch of Victor and his smell, his warmth surrounding me making me feel that I’m safe and that he loves me just much as I love him.

We had an early morning, waking at 7am for our shower and we had breakfast before checking out of the resort and we spent the entire morning checking out various overlooks on our way. We bought some souvenirs too in one of the gift shops we found along the way.

We finished our scenic roadtrip of the park just before noon. We ate lunch at a diner on our way back to Greensburg and we basically couldn’t stop talking about the beautiful scenery, it seemed that we three really enjoyed this short trip we had. Leo was just like Victor and myself, he thoroughly enjoyed this quick weekend getaway and he looking forward to more trips like this in the future.

We were home by 4pm, Victor dropped us off in our houses. I greeted dad with a hug as I came into the house. Over dinner I talked to him about our trip, I talked to him about the various overlooks and our trip to the falls. Dad seemed happy to see me happy hehe.

“I’m glad you enjoyed the weekend getaway son, I’m sorry for not being able to come, but soon enough I’ll be able to join you young ones” dad said.

“Don’t worry about it dad. But yeah, we missed having you, you’ll have to make up for lost time” I smiled back at him.

I was thoroughly drained and by 9pm I’ve retired myself to my bedroom. I FaceTimed with my boyfriend for 15 minutes or so, made our plans for tomorrow and after which I was already off to dreamland.

This time I was back at the ground floor of the library, looking up to the atrium above me, with sunlight shining through the glass roof - illuminating the entirety of the library. In front of me was another book bound in brown leather with the rose and sun symbol again. I flicked through it and for some reason I felt happy and warm as I ‘read’ through it.
