Into the fields of Summer - 38. Discoveries 5

I woke up a few minutes before Leo, I was already stretching my hands while still on my bed when Leo gave out weak yawn.

“Mornin’” I greeted my best friend.

“Morning Chris”

I peered our the window expecting snow but there was nothing.

“So much for a snowy day huh?, can’t believe they let you off school for this” I said.

“They’re expecting it mid morning, you’re just being sour coz being homeschooled means you’ll still have your lessons with your dad while I’ll be in your living room watching a movie hehe” Leo teased.

“Ugh, stop it, come on let’s have breakfast” I groaned, although having lessons this morning wasn’t really a bad idea, I had a knack for doing my worksheets anyway.

Leo and I prepared breakfast, while dad made some roasts and fixed his daily dose of coffee.

Breakfast was a little more quiet than usual, it seemed like we three could have used a few more minutes in bed.

“Leo, go knock yourself out” I told him as dad and I went off to the study for my lessons.

Almost an hour into my worksheets, as if right on cue, Leo was indeed right, it started snowing outside, it was a little light at first but within thirty minutes it got really heavy, dad had to immediately turn on the heater as the outside temperature dropped from 67F (19C) to 28F(2C) in that short period of time.

“Woah, it’s getting really heavy out there” I said observing the heavy snowfall, our front lawn now covered in an inch of snow, with the road a few meters ahead barely visible.

“Yeah, we’re expected to have record lows today, can’t believe this is happening in the middle of November” dad replied.

“Shit... this climate thing is really going crazy eh?”

“I believe so, hopefully it isn’t too late yet”

“I hope so too, dad” thinking that I couldn’t imagine living in a world where winters are very cold and summers equally hot, in the past few years, hurricanes have become stronger, droughts more prevalent, wildfires becoming a norm, cold snaps and heatwaves happening in months they’re not suppose to happen in. I thought, is this why the Elves left our world? Did they foresee this?

Over lunch, having food delivered was not an option, it as a total whiteout outside. We had some chicken and salad, which Leo and dad worked on, while I prepared some mashed potatoes.

As we were eating, “woah, it’s still snowing pretty hard outside” Leo observed and he was right, the snow was falling heavily outside, I could barely see into the street from our window.

“Yeah, hehe, good thing they suspended school for you” I replied with a small grin.

“Well... duh, I ain’t going to school with snow that bad”

“Too bad my school’s just a few feet away then” I grinned at dad.

“Hey now mister...” dad feigned annoyance.

“I know daaad... just saying” I rolled my eyes.

“So have you heard from Stoker yet?” Leo asked.

“Uhm, not yet why?, I thought you weren’t applying for Stoker” I replied.

“Well... uhm” Leo fidgeted a bit.
“Well... I kind of did, last minute... like totally, I was suppose to tell you but I must have forgotten” Leo replied just barely above a whisper, almost avoiding eye contact as well.

“So... what’s the matter?, you don’t owe me an explanation” I replied while taking a bite off my chicken. “So, what changed your mind then?” I asked. That question clearly got him more visibly uncomfortable, there had to be something more behind this I thought.

“Well... August kind of talked me into applying... he was really helpful with the entire process though” Okay... something is up I thought. Leo... and August? It can’t be now is it?

“Oh... I see” my eyebrows slightly raised. “August eh?”

“Yeah... well... it’s nothing really, it was right after one of our practice sessions and he and I talked for several minutes about it, we’ve been exchanging emails and texts about it” Leo clearly uncomfortable now.

“Uhm... okay... uhm.. so what’s the fuss about?”

“Nothing really, uhm, just nothing... forget it” Leo tried to look away hehe.

“Okaay...” still unconvinced but let my best friend be. Dad for the meantime was just clearly amused in our exchange.

I then looked at dad and asked “so... are you spilling about Stoker dad?, this is getting fishy, last time you told me to ask Victor, which I haven’t yet, and now August is recruiting Leo...”

Dad just then smiled a bit back at us and said “not my story to tell...”

“Argh... I’m asking Victor after this storm is over” I grunted. What’s the deal with this place anyway?

Leo and I took care of the dishes. Dad went to his office and dealt with some papers he had to check from his work at the university.

Both Leo and I were just watching some tv when the power was suddenly cut off.

“Damn... no power man” Leo remarked as he stood and went around the living room looking for something else to do.

“Shit..., what do we do now?” I asked looking back at him.

“Uhm... hmm... monopoly?”

“Dude... it’s just the two of us” I complained.

“Fine... fine... let’s think of something else then”

Leo and I settled for a game of cards, which he pretty much won all the way, damn, I was so close in the second round though.

While playing cards, I remembered something from earlier and I asked Leo, “Uhm... so what’s this with you and August huh?” I said as I shuffled our deck of cards peering through some of my hair to look at Leo.

Leo has this frozen look and wasn’t able to maintain eye contact. He fidgeted a bit and I just said “never mind, I know you’ll tell me soon enough anyway...” I smiled a bit.

Leo relaxed a little and looked at me nervously. “Well... I don’t know how to put this Chris, but I, oh my, haha, oh my, sorry, ehem, sigh, okay okay, uhm, ...” he paused again, I had a feeling where this was going and I certainly did not expect this by a long shot.

Leon cleared his throat and said, “well... I think, I like him, well... I’m not really sure about it, but there’s something, dude... this is so not me, oh my god, am I gay?” he totally blushed so much when he said that, I had to stifle a laugh. This wasn’t the time for me to tease him, I had to be the good and supportive best friend this time.

I smiled at him and said “well... that wasn’t so hard was it?” I gave him a strong reassuring hug and then looked back at him, gave him a peck on the cheek and said “take your time, you were there for me right?, am I here for you likewise” then it just felt right, I gave my best friend a
kiss on the cheek and he again blushed on that one.

“Thanks” he muttered. “I needed that”

I just smiled back at him and started another round of card games.

We still didn’t have any power by dinner time, good thing we had a back up generator but we didn’t have much fuel stored, we just turned it on for 2 hours just enough time for us to have a well lit kitchen and dining area for dinner. We had fish, rice, and some salad for dinner.

I texted my boyfriend just after dinner, checking up on him, power was out as well at his place but being the vampire governor that he his he had 3 days worth of fuel for his generator, sigh, we should have stayed there instead I thought.

After dinner, dad joined Leo and I, now for a game of monopoly, finally I won the first round but Dad won the next three rounds, ugh. We had a good laugh or two every time Leo got bankrupted first haha, he was usually better than me but it seemed like dad joining in the game threw him off his rhythm, hehe, serves him well for beating me at the card game earlier hehe.

Just before 10pm we all decided to go to bed, we were expecting the heavy snowfall to stop just before sunrise, Leo was expecting to have school off again tomorrow as the county will have to clear out the roads of snow, lucky him.

It felt as though just as I closed my eyes, I was already back in the tower, weird, now it was almost instantaneous. Somehow, I still don’t know how this really worked but within minutes I was able to call upon Patri and Yal. I basically just thought of them, I felt my energy trying to reach out of them, warm tingles surrounding my body and I could feel the weight of the air not only shifting around me but spreading from me as well, a few seconds later that light distortion and heaviness in the air that came with it became more evident.

“Well... you’re early” Patri said.

“Let’s just say I missed you guys” I said giving my grandfather a hug and nodding to Yal as well.

“Well... at least I think it’s safe to say, we’ve missed you too” Patri replied.
