Into the fields of Summer - 68. Retribution 3

Dad had food delivered for dinner, Victor and I both knew we could trust him, he also consented to a mind sweep from me to make sure he wasn’t compromised in any way, shape, or form.

“I’m glad you guys patched things up” Dad said as we ate some pasta.

“I’m glad too” I replied and Victor nodded in agreement as well.

“So what about this Gustav guy?” Dad asked.

“We’re not sure how deep he and the rest of the rogues have infiltrated the vampire government, but there’s one person I trust on the High Council” Victor said.

“Who?” Dad asked.

“‘My sire, Luca”

“Hmm...that could work” I said.

“I’ll alert him, and he can use his connections within the government to find out more things, I’ll have to talk to him tonight”

“That sounds good” Dad replied.

“William, you’ll have to check whether or not the state government has been compromised as well, we have to find out what they’re up to, I don’t know how or why Gustav joined forces with the Blood Army, but I’m sure he’s up to no good”

“Yes, I’ll find a way for my agents to gather information without alerting the enemy” Dad said.

“What do you think happened to the rogue outposts that they were suppose to attack? Do you think he actually attacked his peers?” I asked.

“That’s another thing we have to find out, but our agents did confirm, that the outposts here in Virginia were already wiped out”

“They could have been compelled as well” I said.

“There’s a high probability that that’s actually the case” Victor replied, he was clearly anxious about what has now transpired, finding out that the upper echelons of the Vampire Government have been infiltrated by the enemy.

“We’ll sort this out Victor, I feel it”
I tried to reassure him. I reached out for his hand and gave it a squeeze.

After dinner, Victor left for his home to talk to his sire, he also had some planning to do, he couldn’t stay in my house that long as we weren’t sure if the house was being observed by the enemy. Now that we know that the threat is greater than what we thought it was, we also talked about extra security, I was to go back to the realm that night to find out if I could get my hands on some magic or artifact that could help protect or at least help us in the fight against the rogues.

I took a short nap but just before 11pm, I willed myself towards the realm, this is getting easier every time I do it, almost in an instant a warm feeling surrounded me and I was now in one of the living areas of Antalus Palace, the residential area of the royal palace complex.

The room wasn’t familiar but I had a feeling I was near Patri. I walked out of the room, and was greeted by several servants. I noticed them giving me lingering glances as I walked around the corridors.

I expanded my aura and bingo! Patri was just in a room a few doors away, but, this being the royal palace, it meant that it was actually was quite the walk from where I was. Along with Patri in the room was an aura that was almost as strong as his. Having two individuals with such strong auras in a single room unnerved me, but then again, maybe I’m just not used to all this magic yet.

I knocked on the door I felt Patri was behind. I sent Patri a mental nudge as well to let him know it was me. Just as I sent the mental signal, the door was quickly opened for me. Inside the room were Patri and a man who looked to in his early thirties. He had light blonde hair, that was cut short as if he was in the military, and it kind of showed, he was wearing a red military style jacket with gold trimmings, the man had dark blue eyes, and he, like Patri, had strong Germanic features, he had a nicely trimmed dark blonde beard, he stood at approximately 6’1 and had a muscular build, his broad shoulders and military stature giving him a commanding aura.

“Chris!” Patri said as he hugged me tight.

“Hi, Patri” I said as I hugged him back. While hugging Patri, the guy that was with him just observed us, and I also felt him observing me intently, it was as if he was studying me and trying to memorize the way I look from head to toe. He wasn’t really trying to hide that he was observing, if not measuring me up, but he wasn’t coming off as someone harmful as well.

“Chris...” Patri said as he pulled away from our hug. “This is your uncle, Crown Prince Rehanmir” Patri said pointing to the man behind him.

The man, who apparently was my uncle, nodded my way and gave me a small smile. He hugged me, tight, and whispered “I’m glad to finally meet you” this uncle of mine was surely not like my uncle Selvenus who was more outspoken. This uncle seemed to be more measured in his actions.

“I’m glad to have met the entire family as well” I replied.

“Oh, Chris, entire family? Not quite” Patri interjected. He paused and then said. “Well... your great grandfather, King Ethnar, and my mother, Queen Roshena and several cousins and aunt of mine are still alive”

“What?” I was confused.

Then uncle Rehanmir spoke, “the former king, abdicated in favor of father, a small extended family, are all still alive” his voice calm, and measured.

“Oh, I see” was the only thing I could say.

“You’ll meet them soon enough” Patri added.

“Am I right to think that it will be during the Ascenscion?” I asked.

Patri had a mischievous smile and said “yes”

“We’re all looking forward to your ascension, nephew” My uncle said as he patted my left shoulder.

“Sigh, this is making me nervous, can’t we just do away with it?”
I asked.

“Certainly not, and not under my watch” Patri sternly remarked, as
I started to whine.

The three of us left the room, and we walked through the corridors.

“Where are we headed?” I asked Patri.

“The training room” he replied. He then looked at me and then my uncle and he said “I think it’s time for you to train your Fire Magic again”

“Are you sure about this father?” Uncle Rehanmir asked, it was as if he was worried for me, I think he’s heard stories about me and my unusual strength, but he is the Minister of Civil Security and a Gold Level Fire Elf at that, he had something to be proud of.

“The question is, are you ready for Chris?” Patri bellowed in laughter.

“I’ve heard good things about you, but I’m not too sure if you’re as good as they say you are” my uncle remarked.

“Well...I think you’ll just have to find out for yourself” I smiled back at him.

Uncle and I ended up sparring for almost 20 minutes, we initially agreed to spar for an hour but by the 20th minute, well, for a lack of a better phrase, I had wiped the floor with him.

The time I’ve spent in the Hall of Maktar certainly improved my fire magic, I didn’t even realize how much better I had become until I summoned those 5 pillars of fire that I used to attack my uncle, at one point I even breathed fire, and my fire breath would have surely put any flame thrower to shame!

Patri stood shocked when I breathed fire on my uncle who was doing his best to fend off my attacks.

“Goodness, I’ll never doubt what they say about you ever again” My uncle said as he wiped the sweat off his face.

“I told you, and you didn’t listen” Patri said to my uncle as he patted my uncle’s shoulders.

“He’s very powerful, father” my uncle said, as Patri walked over towards me.

“I know, Rehanmir, I know” was only what Patri said as he moved towards me for another hug.

“Where’s Matra?” I asked as the three of us went to the dining room, more like dining hall, actually.

“She’s in the northern province together with your uncle Selvenus, an urgent meeting was called, and they had to attend”

“Ah, I see” I was hoping that I would get to spend the day with my entire elven family, well, maybe or another day.

“Don’t worry about it, they’ll be back soon” Patri said. But as he said that, I lost a bit of my control over my mind reading powers and the word “Setalus” came to mind, either Patri or my uncle was thinking about that incident.

What’s with this Setalus thing. It was the same thing that journalist Retasa was asking Yal about, it seems there’s some sort of government gag order regarding this “incident.” I was curious about it, but also thought I had no business meddling in such affairs.

While we ate, what we were eating was late lunch due to the time difference between home and the realm, I asked Patri. “Patri, have you had any experience with manipulator type vampires?”

The moment I said that, Patri’s full attention went to me. He clearly was interested. “Yes. Why is that Chris?”

“Well...remember what happened between me and Victor?”

“Yes, how could I not”

“Well, we’ve made up” I said.

“Really? Well...I’m glad for the both of you, but I hope there’s a good reason behind this, you were a mess when you both broke up” Patri softly said. He clearly was willing to support whatever decision I had made, but it was evident from his face that he wanted me to take things slowly, and be more cautious about my decisions in life, and that includes reuniting with my boyfriend.

Then I proceeded to tell Patri about my discoveries about Gustav and how he had infiltrated Stratos and how he’s now allied with the Blood Army.

“To tell you honestly Chris, it’s hard to fight manipulator vampires, but as elves, our mental shields are naturally stronger, but if he’s as old as you said he is, well, our shields wouldn’t be much of a defense against him, well... I mean our minds that is, I’m sure yours is stronger, but we don’t know how much stronger your mind shield is.” Patri explained.

“So what do I do then? And also, I’m worried for dad and Leo, would there be some way I could protect them without me always being by their side?”

“You mean with an item? An artifact?” My uncle asked.

“If that’s possible, yes”

My uncle gave a small smile, and said “I’ll help you with that” He seemed to be a really nice guy, but his emotions and expressions were always measured, it’s as if he was consciously suppressing the way his emotions were perceived by the people around him.

“Thanks uncle”

“Chris, we have to take you to one of our mind healers, so she can give you some advice when it comes to mind to mind battles” Patri suggested.

“Of course, Patri, whatever it takes”

After lunch, Patri brought me to Taha Hall, the imposing church-like structure still overwhelming me with its expansive size.

“Follow Me” Patri said, while me and my uncle followed him I gave my uncle a questioning look but he didn’t say anything, instead he just gave me a smile.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“To the mind healer” Patri replied.

We entered a small corridor and after several steps we made it to a room which had a warm, rustic interior. It was as if it was a room from a cabin in the mountains.

“Asheda, are you here?” Patri asked out loud.

“Your majesty?!” Shouted by someone who was now completely frantic out back, dropping various books and scrolls along the way, as she did her best to get to the King as fast as possible.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see a female elf, who looked to be in her mid twenties, her Northern European features tell me that she’s an Elurdeya like us.

“Your majesty! Your highnesses” she said bowing to us.

“No need for formalities Asheda” Patri said to her.

“How may I help?” The lady asked.

“Chris here needs a quick lesson with mind shielding, and if you can, teach him some techniques in fighting manipulator type vampires.”

“Manipulator vampires?” She asked, clearly unsure about what to make of it.

“You have heard that Chris is in the human world right?” PatrI asked.

“Yes...”

“Well...it seems like the young prince has found himself in trouble with a dangerous manipualtor vampire, come help your prince, you know how nasty things can get with those types” Patri said to Asheda.

“Certainly your majesty” she said bowing to Patri, she then looked at me and said “it’s a pleasure to be of help...your highness” to be called in such terms still made me feel awkward, I planned on fixing this soon enough.

Patri and uncle left me with Asheda for the next three hours.

Asheda is a pleasant woman, though as observed earlier, she could be such a klutz when she’s nervous, and she was really nervous around us.

“Why are you fidgeting?” I asked her as we were about to start the session.

“Uhm, I’m sorry your highness”

“There’s nothing to be sorry about, and please stop with the formalities” I said.

“You’re really just like them” she said softly.

“Just like who?” I asked.

“The king, the queen, and the princes”

“Huh? What are you talking about?”

“You’re all so nice, and you all insist that we do away or at least minimize the formalities, but you all don’t get it, we, the people, love all of you, if it weren’t for King ZoHal, our kind would have started to wither away in the human world now, if it weren’t for your family, our kind would have been gone.”

“Ohh...“ shit, how was I suppose to have a good comeback when someone throws you such heavy things out of nowhere.

“Nevermind, let’s just proceed” she said, now trying to smile at me.

Asheda taught me ways of how to improve my mind shield, she also taught me what signs to look out for to know who was manipulating and who was being manipulated, just like what Patri said, she is indeed very skilled in her craft.

As our session ended, I thanked Asheda and I then made my way out of Taha Hall and back to the garden which was in between Taha Hall and Antalus Palace. As I walked through the hedges and beds of flowers, I saw a familiar figure out of the corner of my eye, that slim figure could not belong to anyone else but Etalos.

“Hey!” I said to him as I grabbed him, his back was turned against me so he didn’t see me coming. I easily lifted him off the ground so that I could carry and hug him at the same time.

“Hey!” He shouted, he was trying to get away from my firm hug from behind, “stop!”

“Are you sure about that?” I asked him.

“Prince...Chris?” He asked, he stopped fighting back the moment he realized it was me.

“Correct” I said to him as I put him back down on the ground.

He turned around, and his face immediately lit up as he saw me smiling back at him.

“It’s nice to see you again, Etalos”

“It’s nice to see you too, your...”
I gave him a warning look and he corrected himself and said “Chris, it’s nice to see you again”

“There, that wasn’t too hard was it?”

“I’ll have to get used to that”

“I’ll make sure you will” I smiled back at him. The both of us walked back together to the residential palace.

A few minutes later I said my
good bye to Etalos to look for my grandfather and uncle.

I found them both in Patri’s study, they were talking seriously when I walked in on them.

“Oh, sorry, did I interrupt?” I asked.

“No, certainly not” Patri said. “Come on in, so how was your session with Asheda?”

“It was good”

“Good to hear that, though I suggest to not be rash against this manipulator vampire, they’re dangerous, I’ve had my close calls against them before as well” Patri said.

“I’ll take note of that”

My uncle stood from his chair and he pulled out two pendants, the pendants each had a lavender stone hanging from it. “Here... give this to your father and your best friend, this should enhance their mental shields and give them a little more energy as well”

“Thank you, uncle” I said.

“It’s not much, but it will help” he said.

“Again, thank you, we sure need all the help we can get”

My uncle hugged me, and he hugged me tighter and longer than what was expected, and if I didn’t know better, I certainly felt or sensed him take a long whiff of me.
“See you soon, Chris” he said.

“See you soon as well, uncle”

After hugging my uncle, I hugged Patri and I was then off back to the house.

I found myself back in my dining room. Dad was still asleep, not surprising as I checked the time and it was 6:47am.

The sun had clearly not yet risen, and the air was colder than usual, with only 8 days until Christmas winter was certainly making itself felt.

I wasn’t sleepy, it’s weird that I’ve barely needed any sleep the last few days, going off to the realm and not getting any sleep seemed to have barely any effect on me, I mean training and doing chores and stuff still tired me out, but the lack of sleep was something I was coping with rather well.

Since I wasn’t sleepy, I decided to prepare a hearty breakfast for dad and myself. I made some pancakes, cooked some eggs, bacon, and sausages as well.

“That smells good” dad said walking intro the kitchen.

“Coffee’s ready” I said.

“Thanks”

“Dad?”

“Yes, Chris” dad replied as he was filling his cup with coffee.

I pulled out the lavender pendant and gave it to him. “Wear this”

“What for?” He examined the pendant with his hand as he asked me.

“It’s from the realm, it’s suppose to protect you, that’s from Uncle Rehanmir”

“Your mom’s brother?”

“Yep”

“Ahh...” dad said as he wore it, the moment he wore it, I felt a shift in his energy, and with my senses, I could tell that he really did have more energy, and if you looked hard enough, there seemed to be a thin layer of magic that enveloped him. I felt better the moment I confirmed that the magic was indeed designed to protect the wearer of the pendant.

“Come on, eat up” I said to dad, directing my gaze to the feast that I had prepared for the two of us.
Thanks @Etotsira for helping again.
