Into the fields of Summer - 54. Battle Lines 1
The next two days went by rather quickly, and before I knew it, it was already 6am Saturday morning, and my alarm was rather being annoying, I grunted as I turned my alarm off and went to take a quick shower. I usually didn’t mind getting up early, but today, I really felt tired and to be quite honest, cranky.
I got myself a light breakfast as Victor planned for us to eat a more hearty breakfast along the way.
Dad was still asleep when Victor came to pick me up, I just left a note at the fridge telling dad I was off and that he take care of himself while I’m away.
“You look rather in need of sleep?” Victor said as I sat beside him.
“Duh... the sun hasn’t risen yet, of course I’m sleepy” I grunted back at him as I rested my head and body on the seat.
Leo wasn’t even in a better shape when we drove to his place a few houses down.
“You both look rather miserable” Victor teased as again.
“Oh come on, we’re not all creatures of the dark like you” Leo teased back.
“Excuse me... I’m very much a creature of the dark as much of the light” Victor replied.
“Whatever, I’m going back to sleep” Leo huffed as he laid across the back seat, lucky bugger he is, being the only one at the back seat allowed him to lay nearly flat.
Minutes after saying that, we could already here a light snore from behind us.
I couldn’t really sleep but I was still kind of groggy for the first 45 minutes of our drive. However a little bit after 8am I was more awake then.
“So... you in a better mood?” Victor gave me his best smile asking that.
“Yeah... hehe, sorry bout earlier, just didn’t have enough sleep”
“No worries, there’s a Diner almost 30 minutes drive from we are now, we can grab a decent breakfast there” Victor said.
“Yeah... sounds like a great idea”
I replied.
Just as Victor said, there was a Diner several miles down the road, we parked and I woke Leo from his slumber for breakfast.
“Oh... just what I needed” Leo said as he drank some hot chocolate.
“Feeling better?” I asked.
“Yeah... way better” he replied, he clearly had more energy now.
“So are you ready to meet August’s pack?” I asked.
“Uhm... not really, I’m quite nervous actually” Leo shyly stated to us both.
“Don’t worry about it, look at me and how I got along just fine with Victor’s family, I bet you’ll just get along the same with them as well”
I grinned back to my best friend, doing my best to reassure him. Seriously though, August’s pack couldn’t possibly hate someone like Leo, my best friend can just be too adorable and fun to be with!
“Well... let’s hope you’re right”
“Leo... do you really think, August will introduce you to his pack if they weren’t going to be receptive at all?” I asked.
“Well... I suppose you’re right” he mumbled.
“Of course I am!” I smiled back at my best friend which earned me a soft smile from him as well.
We were at the Diner for almost 45 minutes, with our speed and time we’ve spent at the Diner, Victor said we should be arriving at August’s place just before noon.
“So you’ve been to August’s house?” I asked Victor.
“House? that’s an understatement” Victor replied, he had to control his laughter at that point.
“Oh... coming from you?, how swanky can this place be?” I teased back.
“Well... I’ve been to his place four times or so, we’ve gotten somehow closer over the past few years and certainly closer the past few months, but yeah, I’ve been to his place before to discuss some vampire and werewolf stuff, this is the first time I’ll be back in more than a year though” Victor replied.
“So what’s his place like?” Leo asked.
“Well... August isn’t exactly in Baltimore, he lives several miles west of the city, he has this quiet piece of land all to himself and his pack, well, the place is hard to describe but you’ll see it for yourselves anyway”
“So he lives with his entire pack?”
I asked.
“Werewolves are highly social creatures, they’re very close to each other and most packs live together in a house or in a single compound, as far as I know yeah, most if not all of his pack members live with him” Victor explained.
“August has told me that space isn’t a problem though, hehe” Leo chimed in.
“Oh... space is indeed not a problem” Victor stated, this has gotten me curious as to how Victor’s place looks like.
For the next few hours or so we sang along several tunes and also talked about our upcoming trip to London, which Leo and I were very excited about.
Just before noon, Victor turned the car into a a narrow gravel road off the highway.
“Where are headed?” I asked.
The road was lined with shrubs and several trees.
“We’re near August’s place.”
A few minutes into the road, we were met with a metal gate that maybe stood almost ten feet tall. On both sides of the gate were brick covered walls that stood almost 12 feet tall, several vines and moss have started to grow or cling on the wall but rather than look dingy, it actually have the walls a rustic and countryside appeal.
The gate opened and we entered a long driveway, which was lined by neatly trimmed hedges approximately 3 feet tall, with the occasional spruce tree every now and then.
The area beyond the gate was rather well landscaped, it was like a country retreat of some sort.
As we entered a circular driveway, we saw a large three story English country house, it had gray roof tiles and dark orange bricks lining its walls, it also had large windows which surely gave the house awesome lighting indoors.
“Wow...” Leo muttered from the backseat.
“Nice place isn’t it?” Victor said.
“Yeah...” I replied.
Victor then parked his car in a parking area a little bit off the driveway, the parking area already had 3 SUVs parked in it. As we parked, the main doors of the house flung open and out came three guys, one of which was August who was rather beaming and happy, the alpha’s smile said it all - he surely was happy to see Leo again.
We three got off the car and picked up or night bags with us.
“Welcome!” August said as he went over to us, he immediately grabbed Leo and gave him a rather very intimate kiss in front of all of us.
“Hehe, I missed you” August said to Leo.
My best friend could only blush and reply “I missed you too”
August then called for the guys behind him to come closer so he could introduce us, “Cage and Fred, these are Leo and his best friend Chris, and I believe you’ve already met Governor Meyer before” August said then continued “Leo... Chris these are Cage and Fred, they’re members of my pack, the rest are inside while some are out of town”
Cage looked to be in his late 20s though with werewolf aging I’m not sure how old he really was. The man stood at 6’3 and was well built, not as built as August but he came close, he had dark curly hair and light olive skin, his features were Mediterranean but not entirely sure from where, he had a chiseled jaw and amazing light brown eyes. He also had a five o clock shadow that accentuated his features.
Fred stood at 6’1 and was more lean and trimmed than Cage, he looked to be in his mid 20s and had green eyes and short dark red hair, his features were defined but a little bit more rounded than Cage, but he could still look quite intimidating though.
“Nice to meet you both” Fred said as he went over to us and shook our hands. Cage wasn’t far behind him. Both were rather more reserved than Victor’s family but they seemed to be very nice and warm, it just seemed they were still checking on how we would react to them or how they could act around us, not quite what I expected, to be honest, when mentioning a werewolf pack, I imagined a bunch of rowdy and out of control bunch of people.
The rather reserved demeanor of Cage and Fred did not go unnoticed with August so the pack alpha stated to his subordinates “relax... they’re family now, chill out the both of you, god... how could you both be so reserved right now”
“Sigh, we’re trying boss” Fred replied, his voice showing a little bit of hesitance.
“Yeah... just give us some time and we’ll chill out” Cage said.
We then all started to walk towards the large house.
I gave Victor a confused look and my boyfriend went closer to me and just said “they’re just nervous to be around the both of you, well... I’ve read their minds and... they’re nervous to give Leo a wrong impression of themselves and ... “ Victor paused as if to think if he should continue “they’re rather intimidated by you”
“By me? I whispered back
“They don’t know that you’re part elf but they can sense power coming from you”
“What... are you sure?”
“Yeah... I can feel it too, but I’ve just gotten so used to it that I don’t pay it much attention, you do know that the air is rather dense and quite intimidating around you right?”
“Huh?”
“We’ll talk about this later, come on let’s go” Victor said to be as we tried to catch up with everybody else that were already several steps ahead of us.
As we entered the house, or mansion as I should call it, I noticed that the place had a more modern feel to it, it’s indoor color palette was mainly of light brown, white, and gray. It was nicely furnished as well, with mainly modern furniture, it certainly didn’t have the old world and 19th century vibe I expected from before I entered it.
“Nice place you got here” I said to August.
“Thanks... we just redecorated” He replied clearly proud of the improvements and amenities in his place.
“Yeah... I noticed, it had a more old world vibe before” Victor commented as he glanced around the area.
“Well... gotta keep up with the times” August replied.
We then entered an open space that had a grand staircase on it, very similar to Victor’s. The space had a nice chandelier hanging from its ceiling.
“Your rooms are upstairs” August said as we followed him to the second floor, while Cage and Fred went towards another corridor, probably to talk to the other members of the pack we haven’t met yet.
We were brought to a room on the second floor on the far end of a corridor, “this is one of our guest rooms, I hope this will be enough” August said.
“Dude... I’ve stayed here before, it’s more than enough” Victor replied.
As we entered the room, I then said “more than enough indeed” the room was spacious, it had a king sized bed and even a walk in closet! We had a tv and a small study table as well.
“You both settle down, lunch is in 30 minutes” August said as he closed the door, Leo was right behind him.
I had a feeling that Leo won’t be having his own room, hehe.
Victor and I took a quick shower together, no funny business except for a kiss or two, we couldn’t be late for lunch.
We went to the living room before going to the dining room, that’s where August greeted us again.
“Okay... now let’s have lunch” he said.
Coming into the dining room there were two new but very similar faces that greeted us. Cage and Fred were already making their ways to their seats and the two new guys stood a few feet from us.
“Leo... Chris, these are Arthur and Arnold, the youngest in my pack.” August explained. “Arthur ... Arnold, this is my boyfriend Leo, and Chris his best friend, and I believe you’ve met the governor a few years back”
Both guys nodded and went over to us and shook our hands. “Nice to meet you” I said to both of them.
They replied likewise but were rather reserved as well. If I read their actions right, for a second or two I think they actually hesitated to come near me! I can’t be that intimidating right? I’m even the shorter guy in the room, can someone give me a break?
Arthur and Arnold as I initially guessed were identical twins. Both looked to be in their late teens or so, both had dark wavy hair, they both had light olive skin and clearly had Hispanic features. They both stood at 5’10 and had a swimmer’s build, lean and muscular at the same time.
Though quiet, both had very warm smiles whenever they showed them.
I’d later come to realize that the main thing that differentiated them both is that Arthur has 2 small moles near his left eyebrow while Arnold has one just below the left side of his lip. That certainly made it a little bit easier as I was never a person that was good with faces.
The food over lunch was delicious and the rest of August’s pack started to slowly be more comfortable around us, more so with Leo rather than me though, they also kidded around Victor but being a major vampire governor, they still spoke highly of him despite Victor’s near constant protests.
“Gerard and Sergei are out of town, they won’t be back until you’re scheduled to leave, so most likely you’ll meet them next time” August said talking about the absent members of his pack.
“I’ve met Sergei before but not yet Gerard” Victor said.
“Yeah.. Gerard’s always on the move being my main officer regarding pack relations in the clan, he’s got to keep them in line, Fred here helps him out every now and then but Gerard likes the hustle and challenge of it all, so he mainly goes solo whenever we think he can handle the job by himself”
“You can say that again... Gerard just loves going out and talking with other werewolves from other packs” Fred replied. It seems that no one wanted Gerard’s job except for Gerard himself I thought.
After lunch, August gave us a brief tour of the property. It was amazingly landscaped, the trees and shrubs and grass were all perfectly maintained.
“Whoa... this is really beautiful”
I said.
“Well... we try to be in touch with nature, hehe, we have a gardening and landscaping company do the work every week or so” August replied.
“How big is this place?” Leo asked.
“A little bit over 30 acres”
(12 hectares) August replied.
“This is a rather spacious place”
I remarked, observing that the entire property was very much well maintained in a way that it didn’t look too artificial but didn’t lose its outdoor and nature-y vibe as well.
“Well... the place gives us privacy, and the space needed for us to practice our runs and such” August said as his fingers played with several leaves of a shrub we passed by.
We then spent the next half hour or so taking all of the nature in. August even showed us a koi pond that was well hidden behind some shrubs, there was even a small stream that passed through the outer edge of the property. As we neared the edge of the property we saw the wall that marked the property line.
“What’s with the wall?” Leo asked.
“Just some precautions that Crescent Council demanded all Clan Alphas implement along with the ...” August said as he pointed several security cameras along the perimeter of the property.
“Oh...” Was the only thing Leo could say.
“Yeah... a bit of an overkill and certainly affects the nature-y vibe of a place like this, but gotta follow the Council” August stared.
“It’s still beautiful though” I said.
“Yeah it is, if you don’t venture far enough you won’t notice the wall and the cameras” August replied.
Just as we were about to get back to the mansion. There was a beeping sound that went off from August’s phone.
“What is it?” Victor asked.
Just as Victor asked that question,
I sensed something in the air, something was clearly not right,
I felt ill intention and dark thoughts in the air and those thoughts were getting stronger and closer by the second.
“There are intruders in the perimeter” August calmly but seriously stated.
I got nervous at that point, but I had to get a grip, I had a feeling I’d have to fight before this day ends. I hope that all will end well but based on what has happened the past few months, I think I should get used to surprise attacks.
