Into the fields of Summer - 71. Retribution 6
Chapter 71 - Retribution
It’s hard pretending that we aren’t back together, at this point, all of Victor’s agents have already been screened, and if there were any spies following us around, then fuck them, having to hide this has been more of an inconvenience, having to hide meetings and communications with Victor has been hampering our coordination and planning.
At 2am, dad and I dropped by Victor’s place. Outside the house were 4 agents standing guard, all looked to be in their mid twenties and were wearing dark jackets.
“Excuse me, sir, no visitors allowed at this time” a young man told me as dad and I walked towards the main door.
“Tell the Governor it’s Chris” I flatly said.
The guy exchanged looks with one of his comrades and it seemed like they didn’t believe that I had business with one of the most influential vampires in the east coast. The guy who stopped me, brought out his phone and called in the house. “Master Henry, I’ve got two men here outside, wishing to see the Governor” I heard a muffled reply from Henry and then the guy spoke again “they say they’re William and Chris Rogers, sir”
Then I heard from the phone, Henry was shouting now “Let them in! Now!” The guy had a quizzical look on his face and then answered Henry “of course, sir, certainly”
The guy nodded towards the agent standing guard on the main door, it was cold outside but as vampires I doubt that they would have been bothered in any way. Just as the guy was about to open the door, the door swung open and out came a gleeful...no...ecstatic Henry. “You’re back!” He hugged me tight.
“Yeah, seems like it” I smiled back at him.
“So...you and Victor made up huh?” He teased.
“Since Monday” I smiled at him.
“Wait...what?!” He stood shocked.
“Come on, let’s go inside, I’ll explain things to you” I replied. Then as we walked towards Victor’s main study, I explained to Henry what Gustav had done to Victor and why we thought we had to lay low for awhile.
We entered Victor’s study, and his face lit up as he saw me and dad come in. He stood and went over to give me a tight hug.
“So are we pushing through with Baltimore later?” I asked. As the Council has decided that District 4, Victor’s district, will be taking a major role in the operations in Baltimore (District 5) on Friday. Through the information we’ve gotten from the rogues, we’ve uncovered that Gustav plans to attack a holiday concert in the city, killing people in public and live on tv and live-streamed in the internet as well. It seems like Gustav was now bringing the vampire world into public view on his own, it also seems like the Blood Army has grown tired of bringing down the Vampire Government and is now intent on revealing the vampire race to humans.
“Yes, we’ll drive to Baltimore together with 18 agents of ours, August will assist us with 9 of his agents, Cage and Fred will be joining him too, District 5’s Governor, Terrence will have 13 agents of his own, 4 Stratos agents with 6 associates will be joining us.” Victor explained.
“4 Stratos agents?” Dad asked in surprise.
“Yes, we have a lot riding on this, we can’t let Gustav succeed.”
“How about your District, though, we can’t leave it unprotected.” I remarked.
“Henry will remain here, Lucy and Patrick are on alert as well, our people will be spread too thin, but we’ll concentrate on protecting vital infrastructure, like our NuBlood Warehouses, and production facility.” Victor explained.
“There will only be 53 of us, is that enough?” I asked.
“It has to be, other districts are already undermanned especially since our agents have been compromised and a lot are injured, aside from that, the rest are too far from Baltimore, they won’t make it in time, so this will have to do”
“Can’t we just cancel the event then?” Dad proposed.
“We’ve thought of that, but we’re concerned that if we do that, Gustav will just go on a killing spree, with that we won’t know what his plan is or where he will do it, at least with what we have now, we have an idea of where and when he will be” Victor explained.
“People will die” I said.
With a look recognizing what I’ve said to be highly likely, Victor said “sadly...yes, we can’t save them all, people will die tomorrow”
“Innocent ones” I bitterly replied.
“It can’t be helped Chris, this is the best chance we’ve got”
I sighed in defeat and said “I’ll try to save them all”
To which Victor replied, “if you can, then please do, but don’t be careless Chris, I can’t...no...we can’t lose you”
There was always an agent or a human private security contractor in every room of Victor’s place, well except for the private quarters, but, kitchen, Library, living room, training area, all had people standing guard.
I finally found myself alone in Victor’s bed, it was now almost 5am, neither of us having had any sleep, “you okay?” Victor asked as my head laid on his bare chest and he played with my hair.
“I’m fine, just worried for tomorrow”
“I understand, it scares me actually” Victor replied, It caught me off guard for him to admit that he’s scared, he’s always made himself out to be someone who was head strong and had no doubts about his strength.
“Gustav...there’s so much more we don’t know about him” I said.
“I know, but we’re running out of time, we have to act tomorrow, or else...” his voiced trailed off.
“I know...it will be much worse if we don’t stop him tomorrow”
I then sat up, looked at Victor and suggested “I can face him now...I’ll just go destroy every last one of them, you know I can”
“We can’t risk it Chris...“
“Risk what?” I was getting impatient, I wanted this done and over with, and to be honest, I didn’t want people dying as part of the plan tomorrow, especially if I could stop it.
“If you do that, and that’s assuming you even find him before the event tomorrow, you’re going in blind, you don’t have a plan”
“I do...”
“And that is...?”
“Overwhelm then with my power, they won’t even know what hit them” I smiled.
“I know you mean well Chris, but...”
Victor stood firm with plan.
I sighed and flopped myself back to the bed.
“Chris...I’m sorry, but there’s no other way”
“There is... “
“We can’t risk it, and we can’t lose you” he said, hugging me.
Of course, with what’s happening, I didn’t have any lessons in the morning, instead we had breakfast at Victor’s place, dad even stayed over and took one of the guest rooms.
“How’s Leo?” Henry asked as we were walking to the training area.
“He’s visiting August, seems like August is showing him the ropes of Werewolf governance and affairs, he’s actually helping August plan for this operation, the insight of a human teenager apparently is essential regarding operations involving a millenial and Gen Z concert” I smiled back at Henry.
“That’s good to hear, they’re going strong huh?”
“Yeah...strong indeed” I blushed as I remembered the image that I accidentally saw in Leo’s mind. That was a hot scene and yeah, they’re going strong indeed. Haha.
“Leo will remain in August’s compound though, August will not risk Leo being near the concert”
“I hope the compound will be safe”
“The twins, Arthur and Arnold will be there, and August said there will be a dozen Werewolf agents as well, they’ve pulled agents from their task force, as obviously the clan is not large enough to protect the large compound, especially from a dozen or so rogues” I explained.
“Right” Henry replied.
For training, it wasn’t me against Henry but me against 12 newly promoted agents. They were wearing tight dark jackets, 9 male and 3 female vampires, mostly looking to be into their 20s though some looked a little older. Henry explained to me that most were just 10-15 years into their vampirehood.
They all looked surprised when they saw me, one of them was the guy that blocked me from entering the house earlier in the morning.
“What’s the meaning of this sir?” The guy asked.
Henry had a mischievous gleam on his face as he said “boys and girls, what happens in this training floor, remains in this training floor, no one will know about this” this remark confused the vampires more.
“What do you mean sir?” A female vampire asked.
“You can’t mean we’re fighting him?” The guy added. Which only earned a laugh from half the group. While the rest stood confused.
Henry then came to me, and whispered in my ear “they’re too young to realize that you’re not human, they must feel off now, but they don’t recognize it as a threat or even link it to you” he smiled at me.
“So what do you want me to do?”
I asked.
“Teach them a lesson, and...maybe improve on your abilities to fight multiple enemies at once, they aren’t a fraction of your strength, but having a dozen against you will split your attention, we’ll have to work on that”
Needless to say, after 10 minutes of sparring, I was now standing alone in the middle of the fighting area, all the other vampires were either on their backs, unconscious or on their knees breathing heavily.
“What the hell just happened?” One vampire cried out in disbelief.
“He’s a monster” another cried out.
I laughed at that and just said “I’m no monster, but I am the Governor’s boyfriend, so... see you all around?” I laughed as I waved goodbye to the exhausted vampires.
Henry went with me and said “that was way too easy for you”
“I had fun” I replied while gently nudging Henry’s shoulder.
Troy and Mark prepared a sumptuous feast for lunch, and while eating both gushed about learning that Victor and I were back together.
Dad will be staying at Victor’s place during the operation as we felt he would be safer there. Victor and I together with the agents left the Victor’s place for Baltimore at around 2pm. With a meal break in between, we expected to arrive in Baltimore at 7pm. We were in a convoy of 4 cars, a van drove in front of us, Victor, myself, and two other agents were in the second car, and 2 more vans behind us held the rest of the team. The drive to August’s compound was mainly quiet, the atmosphere was filled with anxiety, everybody, including myself, wondering what tomorrow held for us.
We made it to August’s compound with no incident. The narrow road to the compound was now guarded by 6 werewolf agents, I was later told by Leo that all Clan Alphas, especially Council Members, tightened their security as well, attacks by rogue werewolves against some werewolf establishments had been reported though the attacks against the werewolves were minor compared to what the vampires had experienced.
Rounding the driveway, we were greeted by August and Leo who were both waiting for us by the main door.
“You made it!” Leo said as he hugged me.
“Yeah” I sighed, tightening my hold against my best friend.
August and Victor shook hands, and Victor said “thanks for hosting us, we appreciate it”
“No problem, I know you’d do the same for us” August replied.
“So...when is Terence coming?” August asked, curious if the Governor of District 5 would drop by for dinner.
“He should already be on his way” Victor replied.
“Come on let’s get inside” August said, waving on all of us, inviting us in, including the vampire agents.
The vampire and Werewolf agents settled down in another living space, they mostly kept to themselves but there wasn’t any animosity I felt coming from them, more like they were just uncomfortable being with so many of the “other” kind around them. An hour later, they’ve started to mingle, not necessarily friendly but more of conversant with each other, Victor had also ordered some of his agents help guard the compound.
Cage, Fred, Arnold, and Arthur hugged me when they saw me, they also shook hands with Victor.
“An early reunion huh?” Cage whispered to me.
“Seems like it, though I would have loved for this to happen under a different circumstance”
“I agree, we all just have to survive tomorrow” Cage replied, with an edge in his voice.
“Yeah, and I swear, we will all survive” I said matter of factly.
“I’m counting on that” he replied with a smile.
