Into the fields of Summer - 69. Retribution 4

Lessons were again a breeze that morning. I was working on with my worksheets when dad spoke “I think you’ll be ready for the matriculation exam by the end of January.”

“Seems so, but don’t I have to take the test along with all the other home schooled kids in April or something?” I asked.

“There’s an earlier exam date for those who want to matriculate earlier, usually it’s taken by kids who want to study abroad for college, the extra months they get they use for some sort of gap term or spend it preparing for college, while some take the earlier test because in case they flunk it they can just re-take the one that’s on April.” Dad explained.

“Oh, I see, uhm, okay, I’m up for it dad, how do we go about it?”
I asked.

“I’ll sort it out, you just study” he said as he winked at me. Dad seemed to know what he was doing, so I’ll leave everything to him, at least with me matriculating by the end of January, and yes, I’m assuming I’m gonna pass, then I can start my training in elemental magic back in the realm.

Victor and I couldn’t spend time together for lunch or in the afternoon, we’re sticking to the plan of making everyone else with the exception of dad, think that we’re still not together.

However, Victor and I were able to find a way to communicate with each other, we’ve now started coursing our calls and messages through burner phones that dad has gotten for us.

“So how’s everything going?” I texted Victor.

“So far so good” he replied. Then he called me. “How are you?”

“I’m fine” I answered.

Then Victor went on to discuss the progress he’s had with our plan. “I’ve asked Henry to call for a meeting of all our agents in Virginia, we’ll have a mind reader, stronger than me, from the High Council hidden nearby, so that we can weed out the agents that have been compromised” then he paused and said, “then we’ll work with rehabilitating the compromised agents and use them as double agents”

“How about for Patrick and Lucy’s area of the district?”

“We’ll do the same after the mind reader is done here, we have several dozen agents, but it shouldn’t take long”

“Are you sure I can’t help?” I asked, I knew I could do it, we didn’t need the mind reader.

“I know you want to help Chris, but we can’t risk, having the rogues spot you near my house, and also, it’s better that it’s one of the High Council’s mind readers, it would show that we’re being transparent and not just framing Gustav”

“Okay, I understand, but if you need anything let me know” I said.

“Of course, I will, this will be over soon.”

“I hope so.”

“Anyway, I have to go now” Victor said.

“Okay, bye, I love you.”

“I love you too” as those words left his lips, I knew by the tone of his voice that he was smiling, that made me smile too.

I spent the afternoon, alone at Martin’s Cafe.

Martin went over to me as I was seated alone, eating my chocolate cake. “Chris?” He asked.

“Yeah? What’s up Martin?” I smiled at him.

“What happened to you?” He was obviously shocked by my new look, his mouth left hanging as he tried to make sense of what he was seeing. “What’s with the new look? And how’d you grow your hair so fast?”

“Oh...” I laughed a bit realizing I will be having this sort of conversation with several more people in the future. Then for the next few minutes, I just told Martin the shorter version of my stint in the realm.

“Chris, you know, with that kind of power, you know...extending time and all, you essentially have forever to learn and master your powers, you’d be invincible” Martin observed.

“I don’t know about that Martin, being in that room alone for the most part is something I wouldn’t recommend to anyone for an extended duration, I can imagine someone going crazy in there, but you’re right, maybe in moderation, I can use the Hall of Maktar, with everything that’s happening, I think I need to get stronger”

“You’re absolutely right, Chris, I can’t wait to see you get stronger” Martin said with a smile. Then his smile disappeared and he asked “I hope I’m not intruding, but I heard you and Victor broke up”

My smile disappeared as well, I didn’t want to lie to Martin, but we had to keep up the ruse for now, “yeah, apparently he and Gustav are a thing” I tried to act as bitter as possible.

“No way?! I can’t believe Victor would do that to you” Martin was shocked, and he was clearly upset about me and Victor.

“Don’t worry Martin, I’ve spent 3 months in the realm remember? So I’ve pretty much moved on” I said, trying to smile as convincingly as possible.

“Hmm, too bad though, I was really rooting for you guys”

“Don’t worry about it Martin”

“I really hope you both patch things up”

“Well...you never know, but for now, I’m fine”

“I see, I see”

Martin and I then talked about other stuff for the next 10 minutes before he had to go back to the kitchen to assist his staff.

Just as I was about to leave the cafe, I received a text message from Victor.

“Meeting with the agents tonight at 8pm, I’ll let you know how it goes”

“Okay, you take care” i replied.

“You too”

I got home just before 4pm, and I took a nap for half an hour before I was woken up by Leo.

“So how’d it go yesterday?” Leo asked.

“Oh, uhm” shit. Should I tell Leo?
I did a quick scan of his mind, it was all clear, and I said to him “Sorry, I had to read your mind a bit”

“You what?! Chris...how could you?” Leo got a little agitated when I told him that. But he calmed down when I told him about the precautions we had to take due to Gustav.

“*Sigh*, Chris, just this one time okay? You could have bumped into some memories that weren’t for you to see” he blushed a bit.

I giggled a bit and I blushed as well, cause I did somehow get a peek of a very hot scene between August and Leo in the shower.

“You mean the shower?” I asked.

Leo’s eyes got wide, and he was beet red by now. He playfully yet a little bit forcefully punched my shoulder and said “you bitch” he laughed a bit in embarrassment. I knew he wasn’t angry but he was surely embarrassed, but based on what I’ve seen he has nothing to be embarrassed about, and neither does August, goodness, that guy packs a lot, can’t believe it all fit in Leo.

“Don’t you dare mention this to anyone else” Leo warned me.

“Of course, but between you and me, how the fuck did that thing fit?!”

“Lots of foreplay” Leo winked at me with a playful smile.

“Damn...Leo, who knew we’d be having this conversation” I laughed causing him to laugh as well.

“Yeah, straight me would have been mortified” Leo giggled.

Leo joined dad and I for dinner, dad had food delivered for tonight.

Over dinner, I gave Leo his pendant. “Here, wear this” I said to Leo.

“What’s this?” He asked.

“It’s for your protection. It’s from the realm, this will protect you from mind manipulation, and also give you a bit more strength.”

“Oh” Leo was happily surprised with my gift. “Thanks” he said as he wore it. The lavender pendant now hanging from his neck. With a close inspection, I see that a very faint film of light had already covered both Leo and dad.

“How do you think is Victor doing?” Dad asked as we ate dinner.

“I don’t know, he said they’ll start scanning the agents here in Virginia tonight, most likely they’ll finish by 10 or something” I said.

“Hmm, I’m worried Chris” Leo added.

“I am too, I think we all are, this thing with Gustav and the Blood Army, this is something that we have to deal with soon, the longer they continue to roam the more they endanger not only us, but the civilians as well, innocent lives, and maybe even the peace between the supernaturals and humans will be at risk” I said with a worried tone in my voice.

Leo left the house after dinner, and it was just dad and me. At around 9:15pm , dad received a call. He excused himself and he went away for almost 10 minutes, when he got back he had a worried look on his face.

“What’s the matter dad? Is everything alright?” I asked, sensing dad’s anxiety.

“There’s been an incident”

“What incident?” I had an idea where this was going, but I had to hear it for myself even if I dreaded the details of what happened.

“Victor...well, the meeting went south, the compromised agents were activated before the meeting even began” dad explained.

“What? How’s Victor? Is he alright?” I was starting to panick.

“He’s fine, 4 out of the 26 agents were compromised, they attacked several other agents just before the meeting started, the four compromised agents have been restrained and are now under rehabilitation, however they were able to hurt several other agents, some are in serious condition, but all are expected to fully recover”

“Oh...I’m going to see Victor now”

“Chris” dad grabbed my shoulder to stop me. He then said “you can’t”

“Why?”

“Remember, you’re supposed to not be together”

“Fuck that” I said, with a slightly raised voice against dad.

“Chris, get a hold of yourself, I spoke to Victor, he’s fine, we’ll just have to rethink the plan, that’s all”

“Fuck...” I muttered. How can things get so complicated so fast? This is all so frustrating, damn, I’m tempted to just find the rogues myself and blow them all up.
Thanks again to @Etotsira for helping out with this chapter.
