Timothy - 13. Chapter 13
Completing my first year of law school, I found a summer job interning at the law offices of a law firm near home. This allowed me to catch up with Randy and his mother. Randy was doing well, and my dad was bragging, a little, about his grades. Dad also told me that Randy has a girlfriend. I was happy for him, he was a good kid. Mrs. Olman was doing well, and according to my sister, she had made a complete turnaround.
I kept in touch with Stephen. Letters went and came weekly. My dad asked if we were serious. I never really thought about that. I just took each day as it came and fully expected Stephen to be a part of my day. But now that a question has been asked, I need to do some serious thinking.
Life seems to play tricks on us. The day after Dad asked me about Stephen, I received a letter from him. I read that letter twice. He asked me to marry him when we graduated. On the bottom of his letter, under his signature, was a phone number. I dialed the number, and as soon as he answered, I said yes, nothing more.
“Yes?” “Yes”
I could feel the excitement from him and hoped he could feel my excitement as well.
At dinner that evening, I must have been smiling a lot. Dad kept looking at me, and then I noticed everyone was looking at me as if they were expecting something.
“Tim, you seem preoccupied. Is everything okay?”
“Yes, Mom, Stephen asked me to marry him after our graduation.”
Now there was complete silence.
I went for a walk, Randy followed me.
“Tim, are you going to marry Stephen?”
“Yes. Have I ever told you the story about Donnie?”
“No, except when you introduced me to his parents and the goats.”
I told him about Donnie and me. “I missed the opportunity of marrying my first love, and I’ll not miss the opportunity to marry Stephen.”
“Can I be in the wedding?”
Looking into his eyes, “Yes, you can be my best man.” I had a happy friend with me as I walked to Donnie’s and my familiar sites. I quietly spoke to Donnie, and I felt he understood, and I had his blessings.
Returning home, Randy and I had an ice cream cone, Donnie’s favorite ice cream flavor.
School would resume soon, and I returned to my apartment. A smiling Stephen greeted me. He got down on his knees and repeated his question. I looked into his eyes and saw Donnie looking back at me. I knew that my marriage to Stephen was meant to be.
We resume our morning runs. School became intense as this was my last year before I would prepare for the bar exams. I wasn’t sure I needed to pass the bar for a corporate lawyer, but Stephen said that if I wanted to be a lawyer, I needed to pass the bar. Otherwise, I would only qualify as a legal associate in a law office doing all the grunt work.
Between semesters, Stephen took me to his home to see his parents and grandfather. On the way to his home, “Stephen, do your parents know about our marriage plans?”
“No, but we’ll tell them this week.”
I wondered why he hadn’t told them, and then I thought maybe they don’t know he’s gay. “Stephen, do your family know you are gay?”
“No, they don’t know, but Grandfather knows. He knows about you as well.”
“What did he say?”
“He asked if I loved you. I said I did and was planning on asking you to marry me.”
“And he was okay with that?”
“Yes, he said our heart tells us who our mate will be. He asked if I was following any heart. I said I was. He smiled and said he wanted to meet with you.”
“That was your grandfather. How about your parents?”
“I’m not sure. The subject of my interests never came up. I dated in high school, more for cover, I guess. There were a couple of boys I liked, but I never approached them.”
“What happens if they are against our marriage? Have you thought about that?”
Stephen pulled the car over and stopped. “Tim, I love you, and I want to spend the rest of our life together. If they disapprove, then it’ll be their loss. But I think Grandfather will intercede if necessary. He knows and has accepted us.”
Looking into his eyes, I felt his love. Over his shoulder, I saw Donnie, and he smiled while winking.
