Timothy - 19. Chapter 19
Leaving Mom and Dad’s, we drove to Stephen’s home. I knew we would do a repeat of our trip.
Arriving at Stephen’s home, there appeared to be no one home. Walking in the back door, we entered the kitchen. There was a letter on the table addressed to Stephen.
I watched Stephen as he read the letter, and his face changed. He had tears in his eyes. He ran to the stairs leading upstairs. I followed him, running into his room, he stopped, and I heard him cry hard. Walking into his room and I knew why he was crying. All of his computer gear was missing.
“Stephen, let’s go and see Gramps.”
I knew Stephen’s mother wasn’t keen about him marrying me. She wouldn’t have done this in spite, or would she? Walking out of the back door, I picked up the letter Stephen had read earlier.
I didn’t think Stephen was capable of driving in his current mood of distress. I drove following his directions. After driving for about a half-hour, “Stephen, call Gramps and tell him we will be there in 15-20 minutes’” I listened as Stephen spoke to his grandfather.
“Tim, Gramps asked that we meet him at 3801 North Hemlock Avenue. It’s close to his company. I’ll show you the way.”
When we arrived at the address, “Tim, Gramps is sitting on that porch.” I stopped the car in front of the house. Stephen was out before I turned off the engine.
As I walked toward the house, I could see Gramps hugging Stephen. Walking up the steps to the porch, Gramps grabbed me and pulled me into a three-man hug.
“Stephen, I expected your call. Let me show you this house.”
We followed Gramps, the front door led to the living room, and I noticed that the room had a fireplace. The furniture was very modern. Following Gramps, we went into the kitchen, laundry room, and dining room. Then we went to the second floor.
“Stephen, open this door,” and when he did, he turned and looked at me.
“Gramps, I don’t understand.”
I looked in the room, and there was Stephen’s computer equipment. I think Stephen was still in shock. “Thank you, Gramps.” I realized that this was our new home.
Stephen hadn’t caught on yet. I whispered to him, “Thank Gramps, this is our new home.”
Then the realization hit. He grabbed Gramps and hugged him so hard I was afraid for Gramps. Then he pulled me into a three-man hug.
When the hugs and thank-yous were done, Gramps showed us the rest of the house. There were a total of four bedrooms, of which one was a small room, a child’s room. A door at the end of the hall led to a stairway to the attic. I looked for a bathroom, and there wasn’t any on the second floor.
I guess Gramps figured out why I had a perplexed look on my face. There were bathrooms in each bedroom except the small room. Walking into the room with Stephen’s computer equipment, Gramps showed us where the bathroom was, what I took for two closets. One was the door to the bathroom.
“Now we need to go to your father’s office. When you see your mother be sure to thank her, she did all of the decorating.”
We quickly emptied the trunk and back seat of the car. “Steph, leave it in the living room. We can move it to the appropriate rooms when we come home.” I liked that, home.
