Timothy - 24. Chapter 24
Within a week, we ran to Stephen’s high school and back. We did start our cooldowns on the way back, and by the time we reached home, we finished with a rubdown and shower.
It felt good to be running again.
The week seemed to go fast. Stephen had converted my home office into an electronic office. When he showed Gramps one evening, he inherited an additional job. Gramps thought it was such a great idea, and he asked Stephen to take a look at the legal department and prepare a proposal with estimated costs.
When Stephen looked at me, I smiled. Stephen might not have realized it, but he was given a project that might be his introduction to an automated storage and retrieval project. I was sure other departments could utilize his systems.
“Stephen, you didn’t seem too enthusiastic about Gramps’s project for you?”
“It’ll take me away from a chip I was working on. I want to finish that project first.”
“I’ll bet that this won’t be the only project that Gramps will want you to automate. The legal department may be a test case. My guess is that once you have finished these projects, you will have an in-depth knowledge of every department in the company.”
I thought that Stephen would inherit the company from Gramps. Dad had his corporation, and I was sure Stephen would inherit that company as well. Being the only child, it was a natural deduction, and now with these projects, I was more than convinced he was heir apparent.
I loved Stephen, and I would back him on any decision he made. I would be there for him to lean on when he needed me.
Saturday, we had company. I expected Dad to be driving. He had a chauffeur, Randy. I saw his smile as I approached their car. “Stephen, come and see who has a new job as a chauffeur.”
I heard his laughter as he descended the porch stairs.
I helped Mom and Mrs. Olman out of the back seat while Stephan hugged Randy. I was glad to see them.
Stephen and Randy drove their car to park it next to ours at the company’s parking lot. I had the privilege of showing Mom, Dad, and Mrs. Olman our home. We were sitting in the living room when Randy and Stephen entered laughing.
“Will you tell us what is so funny?”
“I told Randy about our security system. He did like you did and waved. Gus called my phone and told me to be careful. I told him this was my son. Randy’s been calling me dad on the way home.”
“Stephen, show Randy our bedroom.” My mom, dad, and Randy’s mother had seen it. I was impressed when I first saw his bedroom, so were they. I knew Randy would be impressed as well.
We listened, and then we heard, “WOW.”
“He has the same reaction that I had when I first saw his bedroom. I wonder if Stephen is going to show him my office.”
Then we heard another, “Oh WOW” “He showed him my office.”
Dad wanted to know what I was doing that required such a degree of automation. I explained that I needed to know the background material until I was fully integrated into the job. “There is so much information in the files that it would take longer to sort through those files than the time I had. The man going on retirement will be leaving in a few weeks. I needed to be ready to assume his position, which means I have to be cognizant of current issues and how similar issues were resolved in the past. Stephen designed the systems in my office that allow me to search the files on a keyword. Then I can print that information or collect it digitally for future references. He did such a great job. He now has to design a system for the legal department.”
Mom and Dad were impressed. “Your grandfather would have been jealous. I remember the books and the file cabinets filled with reports. He had a person on staff that managed those files. He would envy you if he saw what you have.”
“Stephen, can you build a system like that for me?”
