Turmoil... some free verse...
Life is just one step at a time.

Chapter 7- Join Me

I wake up clamoring to reach what’s lost

Beneath ancient unforgotten ruins

Filtering through the life, the pain

The memories

Do you still exist?

Are you still afraid?

I can see—feel—the false bravado

As you face your fright,

Quivering

If I’m to find you, you must help

Cry out from the darkness

Like you do in my dreams

Reach out your hand

Open yourself to the light,

My light and yours

And I will take your hand in mine

All I want is for you to know you’re safe

Surrounded in peace

Loved in your self-imposed death

No more reason for your exile

It’s not for you to carry the shame of others

I would celebrate your courage

And thank you

For you became me

And you kept me safe

As you scrambled for us both

I owe you my life, young one

I wouldn’t be here if not for you

You are free—the weight is off your shoulders

And nothing can hurt you now

I promise you—I promise us

Merged, we are stronger

Join me—no need to be alone anymore

Are we ever truly free of the past... are we even supposed to be? I am trying to embrace mine.

zjudy onr motr--ehsy voulf iy hut? On top of the last one which stirred up my emotions, this put the cap on them...I'm done for the night before I start crying over what should have been a happy future together with the fondness of long joyful times already shared.

These things are incredibly powerful though innocuous enough at first sight.

Thank you, CG for reviewing and showing me your open heart in response. Looking back can be excruciating, but in my case, somewhat freeing. I hope it does that for you too. Cheers, my friend... Gary...

First off I was just browsing through your writing, and this title caught me eyes...lol Beautiful write here. As for your question.. I`m guessing you can`t rip your past out of yourself... But why would anyone even try that? The past is gone, but knowing it should be helpful to understand where you came from, and where you`re headed to... Learn from the mistakes, remember the good memories, know that you lived, and can live more, and try to spend your time on things and people valuable to you, so one day in the future you look back to this year, month or day, there will be some memories to make you smile. Well sorry for the essay, lol.

Don't be sorry, Dennis. I liked your essay :) . This poem, and "Honor Thy Father" were probably the most difficult to write at the time. But, you're right... embracing the past is really the only healthy choice. It made me who I am, and to keep it at arms length was serving no purpose... thanks for the review, and for adding me as a friend... cheers... Gary....

The other comments said most of what I wanted to say.  I will only add that the young boy is deserving of all the love you can give him.  I hope you now embrace him in your heart and soul.  Honor his courage that struggled against great hurt and pain to become something better.  He shares your past, he shares your future.  A very loving and courageous poem.  Thanks for sharing with us!

There are comments about merging, and I call for us to merge myself, but I think I will always see that young boy as a different person from me. In truth, I still marvel at what he withstood... and I weep for him, but he is he, and I am me. yes, I owe him... and I am proud of how quick witted he was as he bent but never broke. He is definitely embraced... I am proud of him and I am proud of me (mostly). Thanks, Terry. This one hits home.
