Adam Blake - 98. Chapter 98

Marcel and Caleb did themselves proud again. Dinner included a chicken medley in individual pies. There was a special green salad served in lettuce leaves and of course a cup of a rich broth that had noodles in the shape of rice. I watched as each boy took his tray to the table, food down, and tray returned. “James, have you ever wonder why the boys always wait for us before they begin to eat? That isn’t typical boy behavior.”

“I think that some of the senior boys have had a few meetings with the Knights. They do it out of respect and a way to show you they appreciate what you're doing for them.”

“I’m very appreciative of that. It means a lot to me and further strengthens my resolve to continue. I already have letters requesting admittance to the college.”

“It won’t be long before you’ll have to expand it.”

“I don’t want to expand it. If I did, it would be a University, we’d lose that special interaction between students and staff. No, the enrollment there will be fixed. Preference will be given to top Academy students.”

“Well, gentlemen, how many are now diving?”

That started the talk about the gymnasium, I listen as they talked about a basketball game, and would it be possible to have indoor tennis. I listen with a happy feeling, the boys will be ok.

“Doc, the Ambassador is online.”

“Hello Ambassador, how may I help you?”

“Yes, the wedding is on… yes, she is excited, me not so much… I’ll be giving up my freedom… I see, so it’s worth it”

“Yes, we are coping but if we see the next year's enrollment the same as this year, we’ll be hurting. I’ll need more dorms and more classrooms.”

“Yes, I plan on building onto the back of the Academy, similar to the staff and dorms we have at the College.”

“Yes, absolutely, converting the existing space will allow us to expand the classrooms. I don’t want to give up the student-to-teacher ratio. I’m going to need your support.”

“That’s good news, why the change of heart? …Well, I guess notoriety does have its good side...I guess you won’t tell me the good news…ok, I’ll wait until I see you at the wedding.”

“You’re smiling, good news?”

“I think so, he wouldn’t tell me except he did agree about the need to expand the dorms and classrooms. So that isn’t the big news. He said he’ll tell me at the wedding.. I almost forgot, I need to see Hans and Gerry.”

“I’ll get them for you.”

I thought they were outside my office, I no sooner sat down at my desk, when Hans and Gerry walked in. “James said you wanted to see us.”

“Yes, I talked about having the priest who performed your father’s internment to officiate at Marie and my wedding. Is that possible and would that be recognized here in the US?”

“Sir, the Priest has been approached and has agreed to be here for your wedding. As for legality, I don’t know.”

“Dad, he’s a Catholic priest, he can marry anyone, anywhere and it will be recognized by the Catholic Church. I think once you say I do, you are considered married anywhere in the world.”

“Good, I’ll scratch that off my list. Hans, we’ll need to beef up security.”

“I have that covered. I spoke to the police and the sheriff's department. They will be on site.”

“James, just check with Marcel, he may need more help in the kitchen, also check with Seth about the tents.”

“I spoke to Seth, he has the tents and chairs all lined up. He said putting on a Renaissance Fair is much more difficult.”

“I hope he’s right.”

Gerry came over and sat on my lap, “Dad, where are you going for your honeymoon?”

“I’m going home for a short stay.” He looked at me, “I’m going to occupy a very special chalet.”

“You’re going home?” I nodded and gave him a wink. He smiled, he knew where I was going. I don’t know if telling him would have been a good idea or not but I can’t lie to him. I don’t think I could lie to any of my boys, Knight’s Oath wouldn’t have been worth the paint if I didn’t keep the Oath as well.

Supper that evening was something else. Marcel and the kitchen staff, prepared a plate for each of the boys with several small selections. I knew that they wanted to see the boys' reactions to these foods. I watched as each boy took one of the items, ate it slowly, tried to determine what it tasted like and if they approved. I chuckled as I watch. Each boy appeared to be performing a taste test. Of course, the plates were empty relatively fast. They were given a piece of paper to record their taste and opinions. Marcel came and collected their papers, then he waved them to the food line. What was there? The rest of the appetizers plus some wraps.

“Dad, are we going to the cabin this weekend?”

“Yes, this will be our last time before the wedding.”

“Can some of the boys come with us?”

“Sure just check with James to be sure we have permission slips.”

Then he was off. How many boys would be coming, was anyone’s guess. If they couldn’t fit in my car they would be with Hans.

It will be soon, the boys are ready.

Just as a point of etiquette, I believe that if a priest is asked by a family to officiate at a ceremony in a parish to which they are visiting or, at least not assigned, it is a matter of proper manners to ask permission of the local bishop or priest or someone with authority.  After all, they are coming in and kind of stepping on someone’s toes. I highly doubt it is ever refused, but manners are manners. You don’t want to ruffle feathers, especially for the people who have to live with the consequences.

Your point is well taken except this priest is the highest ranking priest in Liechtenstein. He will be the same priest who will anoint Gerry as the new king. I think in my story it will be okay. 🙂

Poor old Adam... what with the boys, the college, the academy, the country and Marie he does not stand a chance. Loving it, I wouldn't have minded being in the tasting that evening, love my food :thankyou:Yes, I:thankyou:. Loving that the wedding is coming together and Gerry got approval for the priest to come and perform the ceremony before Adam even asked. Adam and his Knights are truly becoming a force to be reckoned with, I wonder what the Ambassador has up his sleeve...

I wonder as well. I am sure it is something good.

This wedding has to be something special. I wonder how they will incorporate the people in Liechtenstein.

I’m sure.  Since he is so high-ranking, there is no possible way he would be denied, because no one wants to make an enemy of the powerful.  However (and this would be in real time, not necessarily in a story), since he is so high-ranking,  he absolutely would ask permission.  Like I said, it’s a matter of manners—dotting your ‘i’s’ and crossing your ‘t’s’ or minding your ‘p’s’ and ‘q’s’ as the sayings go.

I don’t mean to sound picky.  I know sometimes my comments come across that way. I apologize, if so.

I enjoy your comments and you don't need to apologize. I have taken certain liberties with my stories and this one is no different. I am not of the Catholic Faith so think of me taking a fictional liberty.
