Adam Blake - 93. Chapter 93

Returning to the Academy, “James, do you have the list of new students?”

“Yes, we’ll have 51 new students. I have assign dorms to 50. What do you want me to do with the one student?”

“Is Able one of the new students?”

“Yes, he had a temporary dorm while he was here before school was closed for the summer. “

“Give him the dorm without a partner. I suspect he’ll be doing a lot of painting and being by himself he may appreciate the quiet.”

The new students will be arriving Friday, which will give them 2 full days to become acquainted with the school and start to form friendships. I also wanted to know how Caleb did in France.

Returning students began to arrive on Monday, they were quite happy to renew old acquaintances. I had Gerry, Thomas, and Adam act as hosts. I reviewed with Marcel his and Caleb’s trip to France, but I wanted to hear Caleb’s version.

Going to get my cup of coffee, I chuckled as I heard Gerry, Adam, and Thomas tell Marcel about Mom’s cooking. The big hit was Mom’s pancakes. I wonder what breakfast would be like on opening morning.

As the new students arrived, I made it a point to meet them at the front of the school. I wanted to meet their parents and in some cases renew by associations with parents of returning boys. It didn’t take long for the boys to step right up, I gave them the list of dorm assignments, while I escorted the parents to the Dining Hall, the new enrollees were shown to their dorms. The Knights did me proud. They gave the boys a tour which ended up in the Dining Hall. My college students, Lawrence, and his 5 friends returned early so I had an opportunity to review their online schedules.

Each new student had to be shown Camelot and the Oath. I watched as they looked around the Dining Hall, I saw a few small smiles as they saw the snack machines. I had Marcel serve small snacks though out the day, with supper being soup and sandwiches. This was the normal supper fare , soup and sandwiches or wraps.

By Friday, all of the students, returning and newly enrolled, were at the Academy. Marie was busy getting ready for the wedding and so I spent the weekend at the school. I wanted to have an opportunity to know the new students and catch up on the summer activities with our returning Knights.

Friday supper was a little more than soup and sandwiches, I had Marcel prepare a special supper as a welcome for returning students and our new students. My Knights had used all of the dining room tables to enlarge our square table. Before I left for the summer, I asked the custodian to arrange an expansion of the Dining Room. I needed the extra space for the teachers and staff who chose not to sit at the Knight’s table.

The custodian had followed my orders to enlarge a section of the cafeteria which turned out to be quite nice. The gardens had to be moved, which the gardener indicated would give him and his apprentice a chance to rearrange the plants and add new ones. The enlarged area was like an old fashion sun porch. They used tinted glass to reduce not only the sun’s glare but also to keep the room a little cooler. They decide to install ceiling fans that moved ever slowly. The room reminded me of a large veranda on a southern plantation. The teachers loved it and even some of the boys went there to eat their snacks.

Monday morning, James and I walked to the Dining Room to greet the new students and welcome the returning students. “How long do you think it will take before all of the boys call you dad?”

“I have a small problem with that. I love it when they call me dad because I know it’s out of respect. I don’t think when we have visitors, they should do that. Will play it by ear and see what happens. We need to schedule them for a medical check. The doctor has their medical forms, right?“

"Yes, when we checked in the boys, we made sure they had the forms. I think Jane took them to the medical office.”

“The Doctor may need help in updating the directory. Ask Jane to offer one of her secretaries from the pool to help. Once the directory is updated, it will be easier to monitor their medical and scholastic information.”

“If she has the roster of new students, she can have them enter the basic data, and then all Doc has to do is add the medical information.”

“Do you have a complete roster?”

“Yes, I just need to check on the scholarship students. They will probably require Doc to generate a complete medical history. We have no data on them.”

“Probably wouldn’t hurt. I bet it has been a long time since they had a physical. We have the medical covered, how about dental. I wonder if the boys get a check-up when they are home.”

“We should ask them and see.”

“Yes, let’s do that. Maybe I can get a Dental team to come and give everyone a 6-month check-up. If they need dental work, we’ll send a report to their parents or guardians. They can make arrangements or we can do it. I need to get Gerry’s teeth checked as well as mine.”

I like how they just accept that the boys will call Adam dad. Just think 111 sons. WOW, I thought I was bad when I had 4 kids.

How is the college coming along? We heard how he has hired several people from the seminars for the new school but unless I have missed something still don't know when to expect the new place to open.

The boys may change their opinion of Adam soon if he has them all in the dentist chair; got my next appointment soon and she told me it would be a long one (oh joy!)... I still remember my first two dentists... Mr Pain, then when we moved it was Mr Riske.

Having a dental check up is a good idea. I'm sure the parents will go for it

It takes a while for something as complex as a college to be organized and built.  It’s not just slapping up a building—it’s organizing the programs, educators, degrees, certifications, etc.  In real time, it would take years.  We had a couple of local facilities here go from business school to college to university over the period of 30 years and they had the grounds and facilities already built!

But, Kev.  Really? Mr. Pain and Mr. Riske were dentists?  Oh, wow. That’s like having an ornithologist named Mr. Bird! I believe you. Just—wow. :gikkle:

Yet another wonderful chapter.  But is there ANY way to make them longer than a conversation?  Please and thank you.

I agree, another sweet chapter; however, I'm fine with the overall output of the story's chapters. Yes some people's chapters are longer, I myself had a few chapters 8,000 or more long, BUT, mine and other's came out once a week or longer in between. CL Jobe is averaging 2,000 words a day or 14,000 a week. I can live with that. That's for sure.

Thank you. I have some readers who read my story once per day, that way they get two chapters at a reading.

That is one thing that I have had wonderful luck with in my life. Dental work. I was born in Ohio and lived much of my life in Texas. both states well known for being good for teeth (something in the water I was told). My dentist in Washington cleaned and polished my teeth and ground down a couple of sharp points with the statement, "There, that should improve your love life." He was gay and knew that I was too.

When I went to a dentista (fem.) here in Bahia the only thing she discovered was one tooth that was cracked (probably from chomping down on a prune that still had its pit in it.) So she said it should be removed. My sense of humor took over and as she approached with a hypo to deaden the area, I quietly growled at her, She laughed so hard at that she dropped the hypodermic and had to get another one. Well my growling worked because when she was finished, she gave me a little card with four pain pills and told me to take one every four hours "if needed for pain." I never had so much as a twinge – I still have the pills and will not take one until I have a headache. Now that is the kind of dental care that a guy needs. The hypo hurt worse that all the rest of the procedure!

I have had dental work done in Brazil as well. I was pleased with the results.
