Adam Blake - 82. Chapter 82

Thursday Gerry and I drove to my home. Mom and Dad were gracious as usual. Mom had a late dinner for us, Gerry said he enjoyed it very much and thanked her for dinner. Mom, being mom, gave him a motherly hug accompanied by a kiss on the cheek. Billy and Scotty were there when we arrived, so dinner talk was catch up for me. Scotty was excited to see me and I mostly listened to him. He was playing junior football and from what Dad said doing quite well. It was interesting to note that Scotty was taking after his dad in build. He would be a great football player, you could see it in his eyes, just like his dad.

After dinner, we sat and talked a little while, “Scotty, we have to go home, it’s almost curfew before the game and you have a game tomorrow.”

“You have a game, what time is your game?”

“They play at 3 at the high school.”

“Fantastic, we’ll be there to cheer you on.”

After they left I explained to Gerry that they were the sons of my best friend.

“It’s nice to have someone like you in their life.”

“I’m like that in your life as well.”

“Mom, Dad we are going to turn in. I need to take care of some banking business tomorrow before we go to the game. I’ll show Gerry his room.”

Walking up the stairs, “I’ve never been in an American home, it’s cozy.”

“Remember a house is just wood and cement, a home is made by people who love each other and are dedicated to each other. So no matter what the house looks like, as long as those types of people live there, it’s a home.”

His smile is the best payment I could ever receive. “Gerry, this will be your room for tonight, the bathroom is here, if you need anything I’m right here.”

I put his small travel bag on his bed, wished him good night with a hug and a kiss on his head. “Sleep well my little prince, the angels will keep you safe.”

I went to my room and got ready for bed. It has been a while since I slept in this bed. I just was about to fall to sleep, when my door opened and there was Gerry, tears in his eyes, I lifted the corner of my blanket, and he was in my bed in a flash. I pulled him into a cuddle, I felt his body shake and a few wet tears on my arms. “It’s ok, I’m here. I’ll take care of you”

I didn’t fall asleep until I felt him relax. I wonder if he had problems sleeping at school.

Morning came and he was still asleep. Mom looked in, smiled, and left. We laid there for another hour before he stirred, slowly he became awake, turned, and hugged me. “Did you sleep well?”

“Yes, an angel came and held me while I slept.”

“I assure you I’m no angel, ask Gram and Gramps.” He looked puzzled, “We call the parents of our parents grandmother and grandfather. In slang, Gram and Gramps.”

“Can I call them that?”

“Sure try it when we go for breakfast.”

“It is too late for breakfast.”

“At school yes, but here never. Come on”

I showed him the shower, went and got his toothpaste, set out a clean towel for him. Adjusted the water, when I turned around he was ready to step in the shower. I’ll set your clothes on your bed, or my bed?” He pointed to me.

I took his bag into my room, set it on my bed, took out his clothes. I went and got a cup of coffee, “Not running today?”

“No, we need to eat and then we need to go to the bank”

Dad looked at me, “He’s a special boy isn’t he.”

I heard the water turn off, I went to take my shower, he was standing in front of the sink brushing his teeth. He had some toothpaste on his chin, I took my finger, wiped it, and pretend I was eating it. He made a face, like uck. Then I showed him the dirty finger, and he laughed. I adjusted the water, dropped by boxers, and stepped in the showers. When I was finished, I dressed and we headed downstairs. I whispered gram and gramps. I think he was a little intimidated, but Mom has a way about her.

“Son, would you like chocolate chip pancakes or an egg omelet?” He looked at me, I mouthed pancakes

“Gram, may I have the pancakes please.”

Mom smiled, “Yes, you certainly may, with blueberry syrup. How is that?”

He looked at me with a smile, I raised my eyebrows and smiled as well.

“Thank you, Gram, it sounds delicious.” Dad set a glass of orange juice in front of him, he looked at dad, “Thanks, Gramps.”

I love this kid.

Breakfast was a delight watching him eat mom’s cooking. It seemed every bite was a new experience. “Dad, can we have this at school?”

“Sure only I bet Marcel will call it crepes.”

“I have eaten crepes but this is better.”

“Marcel is our French chef.”

We brushed our teeth together side by side, he tried to wipe my chin. I was too tall, but when I bent over to rinse my mouth he got some. We were laughing as we came into the living room. “I don’t know how long we’ll be at the bank, but if you want to go and see Scotty play, I’ll stop by and pick you up.”

“I don’t want to take the chance if you run late, will meet you there.”

“This is the bank that Gramps uses for his business and I have a small account here as well. Will get a safety deposit box for your ring and a few other papers I have that are yours. I just need the guardian authorization.”

Chapter Comments

Yep, after reading all those comments and replies about the wicked stepmother, knew they shouldn't have given her a cent because she'll use every penny to try to get back at them in some way. The poor house for that wretched b&*#@!

I believe that fate has a role in our life. Good to those who do good and retribution to those who do evil. I firmly believe that she will try something and get what she deserves. Gerry and Adam did the right thing.

When the evil stepmother try's to do anything, she will quickly find out that her deceased husband's will combined with the legal norms of the country, along with Adam's guardianship will quickly put the kybosh on he misguided efforts!

If I remember correctly, in one sense Adam is the de facto ruler of the country, he should send her to the kitchens/laundry to a lifetime of servitude as a scullery maid!!

Sometimes even when you try to do the right thing, the culprit doesn't realize that they could have been given a much more severe punishment. She will not be successful

Gerry is young.  Barely into his teens, I believe. That is an especially difficult age to lose a parent, let alone his last parent, leaving him, effectively, an orphan.  Thank goodness his father knew how things were between Gerry and the stepmother and put Adam between them after the glowing reports he had received about the school’s President.  At least he knew he was someone to trust, although I am a little surprised a regency had not been set in place already.  Maybe the stepmother tried to make herself the Regent and the King managed to thwart that when Gerry showed up with Adam.

I got the impression that Gerry and his father were actually quite close. It was good they were able to say goodbye, despite what that witch tried to do. It was good Gerry had Adam as his support during the funeral and after. He may be a Crown Prince, but he is, first and foremost, a little boy who misses his father.

He should also thank his friend who alerted Adam about what was going on with Gerry so that Adam was able to take action. That is what this school is for—to instill the kinds of friendships that will reverberate down through the years so that the boys, and the men they will become, help each other without thought.  Code of the Knights of the Square Table!

I can't add anything more to what you wrote and for that I thank you.

I would have loved to have had a Gram and Gramps in my life as I was growing up. All of my Grams had passed before I was born, my adopted Grandfather passed with a heart attack when I was seven. I remember him though. When we were young this hulking great miner used to lie on our beds with us and make these stories up about a café and a young man that lived there. I still remember them now, I wish I had know his wife my adopted Gram as she was a poet and I her handwritten poems to this day.

Mind, I do not think any oft hem would have know how to make chocolate chip and blueberry pancakes. WOW! Why doesn't England have things like that. Our pancakes are crepes and I have never liked them. I did have American Pancakes though when I lived with an American family in Mildenhall airbase in the 80's. Fantastic family... Six kids but still made room for me and the other guy that I had to work with. That's when I got addicted to doctor Pepper as well.

Memories... It all seems so long ago now.

I love how Gerry is turning to Adam for support. also the fact that Scotty and Billy just accepted him will have made a lasting impression on him for when he is 21 and has to accept those around him as well... Loved the chapter.:2thumbs:

Now Adam has the additional responsibility of training a young man in the responsibilities of becoming a national ruler when he turns 21. Because they are going to be living in a country that has no real national ruler to use as an example, only a succession of elected presidents, that is not going to be the easiest job in the world. Perhaps Gerry will remake the political status of his own country into the style of Great Britain, with a king who operates with the suggestions of a national elected Congress (Parliament and Prime Minister?).

I am glad to see the creation of a level of protection for the school — all those Kings and Ministers to be, in one place, would be a great temptation for political upset, One wild man could creat world-wide havoc with a couple of grenades at a school such as that!

It was a wise decision to have Adam help Gerry to be prepared for his leadership responsibilities when he is twenty-one. Knowing Adam, he will make sure Gerry is knowledgable about any decision he makes
