Headstall's Reflections - 45. Chapter 45 Battle Fatigue

Just a poem about a life in progress.

Headstall’s Reflections

Chapter 45 Battle Fatigue

Life is messy

Even at its best

It spills

Leaving stains

On the fabric of our lives

We cope

And we learn

But evidence is left behind

No matter how hard we may scrub

And it survives in many forms

There are times

It bolsters our strength

In subtle ways

And reminds us

Of what to avoid

But, too, it can wreak a quiet havoc

Changing who we are

And who we want to be

Bitter seeds can flourish

When hidden beneath pain

Granted, only if we let them

And don’t disguise the damage

As comfort clutched close

Someone smarter than me once said

What doesn’t kill us

Makes us stronger

They were probably right

But it’s hard

To mount an offensive

When the lethal blow comes slowly

And our apathetic defense is tired

And full of tattered holes

Yeah, so I'm okay. Sometimes the words need to come out.

The only response I've got to such feelings is how it works for me...sometimes. I try to smile and look on the brighter side, and if I'm lucky, it becomes true in time.
Sadly, my mantra was co-opted by a political movement in Germany before WWII:
'Strength Through Joy'...the original name for the Volkswagen car which was to symbolize the new prosperity coming out of the Depression...but was a mask for other movements.
Still, I feel better able to cope with a smile on my face than a frown.

"Leaving stains / on the fabric of our lives..." is an inspired phrase. There are indelible marks left on the carpets and clothes, the result of a whole bunch of events I still remember. You ponder the cost and the reward of such stains, such events poetically and evocatively. And the hidden, bitter seeds which only flourish if we let them...you speak great wisdom in this. As always, you touch my heart and describe the truth so well.

I guess you are right, our life is like a ring, which gets notches, scratches and dents through the years. But to me it is very good, that you have the power to express your thoughts through your poems. Sharing the feelings, giving others the opportunity to get a glimpse of the inside is very strong, like a ring.

Hug you.

Hey, Lyssa. I like the idea of the ring and the damage time inflicts. And yeah, I'm lucky to have poetry to help me let go of some of the damage... thanks ...

Strength Through Joy... like it... haven't been feeling the joy lately, but it will come... I have faith... thanks, buddy xoxo

Thanks, Parker. If I touch your heart then I take joy from that... sometimes it's the smallest event that has the biggest impact... lovely review, my friend...

This hit me very deeply tonight. This in particular, perfectly portrayed: "But it’s hard to mount an offensive when the lethal blow comes slowly." It's often easier when it's quick and brutal.

Again, your words produce deep effect, Gary.

Hey, Mac. Thank you for your words. This helped me... I might not be in the best place right now, but knowing my poem had an effect gives the poet in me sustenance... cheers, buddy... Gary....
